Hypothetically speaking, since he's not on scholarship would it be an NCAA violation to help him out a bit with books as a good samaritan?
Hopefully if we're under the 85 limit in the fall HCMM will find the space to put him on scholarship.
That is of course outlawed by the NCAA. What would be legal is for us to pool together and sue there sorry asses over this.
I feared this, not only because we need the WR help, but because the kid is being screwed.
BTW, I don't think the article has it right. The rule simply states that if you are a full-time student at a D1 school, you must sit out a year when you transfer, independent of whether you were on the team, on scholarship, ever practiced etc. Remember the Mel Holiday story where he transferred from D2 to NU but was not allowed by Bill Callahan to try out? So he transferred to CU and won a job, but compliance then found out he had to sit, despite never practicing for NU? And paying his own way at both institutions. Dumbest rule I've ever seen. Vincent has not been on scholarship since he got booted from CU. He should be allowed to take classes wherever is convenient and transfer back to his ORIGINAL school, with no further penalty.
It looked pretty straight forward to me because I read he was a student at Sam Houston State (D1). Of course he had to be a full time student because in order to be eligible, he'd also have to satisfy the NCAA's rule of needing to be on track to graduate. So that's the catch-22. If you are "kicked out" of school, and you want to transfer back, you have to take a full load, so you pretty much have to do that at a Juco. Of course, CU doesn't accept a lot of classes from Juco's....
I stated in his profile thread that I hoped he was working with compliance this whole time, because what he was trying to do was tricky. If I was the great Jon Embree, and I cared about this kid like I claimed, I would have made sure that his classes and schedules were approved by compliance and admissions each step of the way. Sounds like nobody helped the poor kid. Now, it's also quite possible that nobody in the AD wanted to encourage the kid to come back here.
I happen to think the offensive coordinator here wishes it was handled differently.
If Vincent is as good as some think then I'd like to see him stick out the spring and be put on scholarship this summer. Much like Hawk did with Celestine when he came back on his own nickel. You got 85 scholarships and this kid deserves one of them in my book.
