Key dates for 13-14 season?

I'm curious about when we should expect an announcement for CU's basketball schedule for next season? I'm thinking we would hear something in July or August.

When would practice begin as well?

I'm going to take the rest of spring and the entire summer off from football this year.

I would expect that the next thing we'd learn would be what early season tournament we're planning on winning.

Ugh you don't want to know who we are going to be playing. It sounds like a bunch of scrubs are just coming here.

In Thorburn's chat today.

They are hosting three small programs, including Arkansas State, in an exempt tournament. Wyoming will host the same three teams. And then the Wyoming game at CU will serve as the "championship" of whatever the tournament is called. In 2014-15 CU will play in the Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu.

The nice thing is that we'll get to see more games next year. Otherwise, it's not anything to get too excited about.

Arkansas State should be pretty good (Top 150 RPI) with what they return. I hope the other teams we play are also Top 200 programs.

Playing in the Diamond Head to start 2014 will be a nice selling point to recruits in the upcoming class. I'm very happy about that one. I may need to go out for that.

So disappointing. I was worried about this as soon as I saw how full all the other tournaments are. This will do nothing positive for our RPI. Hope we schedule wisely in the rest, because we're going to need it if we want to be the beneficiary of a high OOC SOS. When Arkansas State is the "headline" opposition for a tournament (which they apparently are), there are issues. I dread beating up teams the caliber of Lamar and Maryland-Eastern Shore and seeing how that treats our RPI.

Hopefully we'll be back in Maui the season after that. Isn't 5 years the time span when teams can go back?

Probably need to add another KU type game in there. New Mexico comes to mind.

That sounds right. Honestly, though, I'd like to try to get to Puerto Rico, Paradise Jam, Battle 4 Atlantis and the Cancun Challenge too. All of them are nice tourneys in fun locations. The thing I don't like about Maui is that you can get a draw that puts you up against Chaminade and it gives you nothing for RPI.

At least it doesn't hurt you, unlike bad draws in those other tournaments.

I think that might change. But one thing that hasn't been mentioned in the articles about DII schools being on the schedule is that the wins against them do not show up on the team sheets the selection committee gets. Granted, they look at RPI more than W/L so on balance it's better to schedule DII instead of RPI 250+ in the non-con, but I say to not do either. You can dramatically inflate RPI by scheduling in the 101-199 range for all opponents. You don't really have to play anyone, you just can't lose these games or have RPI killers on the schedule.

Speaking of that magic 101-199 range, here are the "juggernauts" that would have meant scheduling in 2012-13:

That's where you make your RPI living. It's how the MWC and programs like So Miss inflate their RPIs. Schedule the 2nd tier of the WCC, MVC and C-USA. Mix in some upper tier Big West and WAC. That should be 2/3 of the OOC schedule.

Probably need to add another KU type game in there. New Mexico comes to mind.

New Mexico would be a great addition. Any over-inflated MWC team (UNLV, San Diego State, whatever). It's pretty crucial we find another "big" game, especially because CSU is due for a drop off as they lose 6 Seniors from this year.

I wish we could schedule St. Mary's or the Zags sometime in the near future in a home and home.

Zags would be a nice "get". They need to upgrade their sked as well. Same with St Mary's.

Or how about Wichita State? Tad's got some background, there but has been gone long enough (6-7 years?) for it not to matter.

"No" to the Lobos next year, they will be absolutely loaded, Top 5 and NC contender from the get-go, don't match up well with the Buffs(two seven footers and big PFs) and would likely demand the first game of a home-and-home in the Pit. Not sure an early blowout/physical beating loss, even to a high RPI team, would be helpful to the Buffs' psyche---they'll still be young, w/o benefit of a European trip. Start a series w/ them 2014/15.

Sub DU for AFA. Academy graduates 4 Sr starters, while DU returns all but one, from a decent lower mid-range RPI, 20-win team. Give R. Billups a chance to rep, too!

Rodney may be the reason we have not scheduled DU. Tad's very sensitive to trying not to schedule against kids that he and his staff have recruited elsewhere. We don't see Northern Colorado or Texas A&M on the schedule for this reason despite the great relationships our program has with them.
