2013-2014 Roster Depth Chart ('13 Recruiting Complete)

Hey guys, I wanted to get everyone's thoughts on their depth chart for the 2013-2014 roster.

PG: 1) Dinwiddie 2) Hopkins 3) Stalzer 4) Talton Redshirt SG: 1) Booker 2) Jenkins SF: 1) Johnson 2) Fletcher 3) King PF: 1) Gordon 2) Thomas C: 1) Scott 2) Mills

This is arguably the deepest team ever in Colorado's history highlighted by 7 Top 150 recruits. Most coaches in the nation would be glad to have our roster. Not only are they talented, they are all young which should be beneficial for years to come. I do believe that there will be at least one redshirt this year and I think that it should be Talton. He did show flashes this year, but overall I think that he needs some time to develop. I am also very pleased that we addressed our need at PG for '14-'15 with Dinwiddie most likely going to leave early to the draft.

Side note: The '14 recruiting class in on track to be Boyle's best. With one Top 100 Recruit already committed, I think Boyle will grab a Top 100 PF/C and hopefully a Top 100 SG.

Pick one because there is only one more open spot with King on board. We have to take a big with the last spot.

PG: Dinwiddie.....Talton/Hopkins......Stalzer
SG: Booker........Fletcher/Hopkins...Jenkins
SF: Johnson.......Fletcher/Hopkins/King/Jenkins/Thomas
PF: Gordon........Johson/Thomas/King
C: Scott...........Gordon/Thomas.......................................................................................................................................Mills

Outside of the starters, which I think are almost locked in at this point, that might look pretty confusing. I put all the backups in there like that because I put guys in at every single position I think they're capable of playing and took into account potential small rotations/putting 3 point shooters on the floor (see Thomas at the 5). I also didn't put the backups in order because I have no idea how things are going to shake out with the 6 guys who didn't play last year, but I'm high on all of them.

I think King has a good chance of redshirting for many of the same reasons Gordon did this year.

I'd be surprised if we didn't sign three players for 2014. Attrition happens.

I think Talton will be the #2 at the point. Hopkins projects more as a 2 or 3. If anyone redshirts it might be King, due to depth at his position.

Whoever doesn't redshirt isn't going to see a lot of time on the floor anyways with Spencer in charge. Talton is a better player right now that Eli but Eli is more stable and ready to be consistent when called on. The bigger issue is that Eli isn't likely to get a lot better than he is now. Having an extra year of Talton after Spencer is gone might look very appealing, especially if that is a Talton with an extra year of development.

Certainly not saying this is how it will go down but I could sure see Tad looking at it this way and it also making sense to Talton to trade a year with very limited minutes for one in the future with a much bigger role potentially.

You don't redshirt Talton or Stalzer. That would be a horrible roster move.

They should both be in a position to earn minutes after a year on the court. If they're not, then you want to move them through in 4 years rather than having them take a roster spot for 5.

For example, Ben Mills played 92 minutes of game time as a freshman in 2010-11. As a sophomore, he played 21 total minutes and then 23 total minutes as a junior. Stalzer and Talton are way ahead of that, respectively earning 228 and 234 minutes as freshmen. But if one of them ends up dropping down to Mills Level for minutes, it's better to let him do so than to redshirt him.

I mean if I had to choose one I would go with a PF/C. I think we are going to need some height. I am hoping for someone at least 6'9.

I think Eli should redshirt if anyone is redshirting this year. He needs a year to develop his body and to become a knock down shooter.

All of our freshman should play this year IMO.

Eli has developed as much as he will. I really don't expect him to be here when Collier takes over. Kid was an insurance policy that turned out to not be needed.

Based on his observations, Whelan said Jenkins is a SG and King is a SF based on their games.

But, as nik mentioned earlier, what's the point? It's not like he'll demand PT and, long-term, do you really feel he's going to be a significant contributor in 2016? At that point, he could be buried behind Collier, Hopkins and Conway on the depth chart. Eli is going to be a backup PG for 4 years, but there's not a lot of upside to redshirting him.

Tad has me salivating in that we can have a pretty long team when it comes to the perimeter.

I think we are spending too many BTUs on fitting these guys into a box. Tad's style will be to have at least one guy on the floor that can bring the ball up against pressure. Dinwiddie can do that. The other guards had some challenges at times. Askia may be the next most reliable at this time. Opportunity.

Beyond that, there's a center position when Scott is on the floor. Then there's what I call wings. There's not a lot of difference in the 2, 3, or 4.

Gordon seems to be a 4. Beyond that, a bunch of these guys coming in are versatile, long and hopefully can shoot the ball. King, Fletcher, Thomas, Jenkins and XJ. Hopkins being more of a ball handler, but similar size.

If these kids can pick up the system and play D the way Tad likes to play D, then there's some kids on the roster who were recruited over.

Lastly, Tad is going deep into Arizona and Texas. I grew up in AZ and started my professional career in Dallas. After enough summers there, I have always thought that Colorado would be a very attractive place to go to college for these kids. Tad can do it. HCMM can do it.

Holic-

You have a great point in terms of trying to fit things into a box. One of the reasons Tad has been so successful is that he has been able to force other teams out of their box to adjust to the options that Tad creates both offensively and defensively. We have also seen that Tad will continue to adjust to take best advantage of what he has available.

One of those adjustments that you are going to see I think is that just as you state that 2,3,4 are interchangable with Gordon we will likely see the 4 and 5 becoming interchangable. Gordon doesn't have the offensive game that Scott does, not many big men do. On the other hand he is better equipped to deal with some of the physical demands inside on defense. I expect to see that when both are out there Tad will be able to take advantage of what Scott can do offensively as a 5 and still let Gordon do what he does best as the 5 on defense.

As has been stated earlier Eli is pretty close to his ceiling as a player. He is not likely to develop into a full time starter or big contributor and based on recent history keeping him an extra year will mean Tad not using his roster spot for a much more talented player. What I would like to see Eli do is become a specialist in coming in for short spurts and getting the team back into control and into the offense. One criticism I have of Tad's teams is that they seem to have stretches where they almost forget how to play offense and end up with ugly scoring droughts. A kid like Eli may be able to push them back into playing the offense that Tad wants and that will work for us.

Tad has mentioned that he thinks Stalzer has the ability to become a clutch 3-point specialist, much like Levi Knutson was his senior year. You make fair points but what do you do? Tell him to leave the program?

No. You honor the scholarship and play him whatever minutes he earns - whether that's Beau Gamble minutes or Askia Booker minutes.

You don't redshirt Talton or Stalzer. That would be a horrible roster move.

Agree, that would be counter productive to future roster management. The way our roster is trending we will be consistently taking Top 150 players. Best to cycle through the non-elite players without interruption.

Not writing either off but the way we're headed Talton and Stalzer would represent the bottom half of talent on the roster. No knock on them, but they will be competing for minutes against the nations best. It's only going to get harder for them to see the floor from here on out.

Am I the only one who's not ready to write off Eli? It's one year, and the kid's never going to be a starter but we didn't expect him to. I can see him running the point for 5-10 minutes a night next season depending on how the off-season shakes out.

No, you're not. I wrote in the post above yours "not writing either off". Doesn't mean I think either will star for us though.

What you're describing isn't as high of a ceiling as we can get with many other recruits. Perhaps we're spoiled with Spencer, Ski, XJ, Scott, etc. But no one is thrilled about a backup PG who would play limited minutes at best, or someone who sees no minutes at worst.

agreed.

I have always liked Eli's game, if he would have made his shots last year we would be loving him. He is what he is though, and that's not a starter or someone who plays more than 15 minutes per game.

I haven't written him off. I still have hopes he can be what he was recruited to be: a backup PG for 4 years. Two of those may be under Mayor and two of those may be under Dominator. I'm with you on the 5-10 minutes. As I have also said, he could earn more than that if he can become a spot-up 3pt shooter and also a 90% FT shooter. This would earn him a lot of extra minutes, particularly at the end of games when you either need to catch up or protect a lead.

But as I also said, it's up to Eli to develop his game in order to earn that. If he doesn't progress from the 2012-13 season, he's looking at 3 years of Beau Gamble/Ben Mills minutes in front of him.

I think some of the comments about Stalzer's potential to be a spot-duty 3 shooter are getting a little a head of what the stats from this year look like. Talton was 6-12 from the arc, Stalzer, 6-21 and Talton only played about 6 more minutes on the year. Stalzer was better at the FT line (6-9) but I don't think either showed that they 'll put much pressure on opposing defenses by beating their man and getting into the lane.

At this point I think it's just as likely that we see some combo of ski and hopkins at the point when Mayor's not in.
