How much does having MacIntyre in year 1 hurt our candidate pool?

The new AD's top priorities are:

1. Football
2. Football
3. Football

MacIntyre is basically off limits for at least 3 years (assuming he doesn't leave). So it will be at least 3 years before the new AD will truly have his say in the Football program. This is assuming MacIntyre doesn't work out. Also, you always hear that AD's want "their guy."

The good thing is that no one in their right mind would want to come to CU and take over.

actually, might be a positive for the new AD. They come in witha clean slate and one job (fundraise) to focus on for hte next 2-3 years. Then they can address football as it becomes necessary. That, and always giving Tad what he wants, when he wants.

MacIntyre better win and win right the **** now. He's already a marked man with the administration without his team even having played a down yet.

I'm not sure it's really a huge negative. Like snow said, he just has to raise money for facilities for the next couple years. If Mac sucks, then he can hire his own coach. It's pretty much a guaranteed 6 years or so, and that's not even including the CU giving AD numerous chances at hiring coaches angle.

I think it is a positive. If they hired me as the AD, and we needed a coach, and I got it wrong, the coach, and me, might be fired in three years. Four tops. Now, he can let it go three or four years, and if it didn't work out, then he gets to hire who he wants (or who he can get). Which then buys him another three to four years.

So now he can work hard on fundraising, getting the new facilities in place, if he can accelerate the process everyone is jacked....and his job is safe and he is billed as a hero. I don't see a negaative, unless him and HCMM butt heads. And I don't think that is who HCMM is.

:yeahthat: Rep for that comment. Most astute observation you've made in a while!

The priorities for the AD are really: 1) Trust and Leadership; 2) Bottom line on AD's balance sheet; 3) Facilities for ALL sports; and 4) Keeping Boyle. But the big elephant in the room is fund-raising, which really underlies 1 through 4!

Football is all on HCMM now.

Agree with this.

New guy coming in doesn't have to deal with finding a coach, he can go straight to work on fundraising and facilities.

If M2 turns things around and wins then the AD was the guy at the helm supporting the program when it happened, if M2 fails then it was a coach who was imposed on the new AD and he gets to pick his own guy to turn things around. Either way he gets at least 2-3 years before he has to deal with the issue of the head football coach.

In the mean time if he can get the facilities programs moving and turn a profit on the athletic department he is gold with those above him. This with increased PAC revenues starting and a big boost from the growth of BB revenues and WBB on an upswing reducing the deficit for that program.

All in all not a bad situation for a new AD, . . . . . . . . other than having to work with Dr. Phil and Benson.

SYJ! Oh yeah, as if CU needs a $10 million HC buy-out right now. HCMM has at least four years just to work down his buy-out number, if nothing else! And he's a life-long coach with a ton of pride. He'll win alright, but expectations of immediacy are plain stupid.

There are much bigger issues with this job than a football coach already being in place. For CU to make a quality hire, we will need open the checkbook. We need someone who can fundraise and can demand change. Someone who is not afraid to speak about the wealth of problems and address them. We need a leader.

I would say it hurts in the fact that it does limit our candidate pool to those who confident Coach Mac 2 can succeed. If he doesn't, fundraising will be impossible.

Candidate pool for what?

Volleyball coach if Kritza doesn't win this year after getting ample time and resources to build the volleyball program? (I have confidence here, fwiw. VB returns everyone, has a lot of talent, and made major strides in the win column last season.)

Tennis coach if Kenneally can't turn things around despite not getting adequate resources following 3 poor seasons that followed 8 years of finishing nationally ranked? (I also have confidence here, fwiw - this past year was an improvement.)

Otherwise, we're either talking about coaches who have earned a ton of job security (i.e., Rokos, Wetmore, Boyle, Lappe) or new hires that are still in the honeymoon phase (i.e., MacIntyre, Sanchez, Elliott).

Bottom line on a balance sheet?

I don't see MM being here as a liability for the next AD nor do I see him leaving in under 3 years unless fired. He's a coach that appears to be on the rise (so was Hawkins). And every school that hires an AD has coaches that were not the new ADs people that they have to deal with plus the extra baggage the program likes to bring....

1. CU is not in the tier of schools that hire a huge name coach like Saban. Maybe we were when we hired Fairbanks.
2. CU is not in the tier of schools that hire a coordinator from the tier above like we did hiring Mac from Michigan
3. CU does not hire head coaches away from their peers anymore like we did with Barnett from Northwestern
4. CU doesn't seem interested in the coordinators at these peers either. People like Stoops little brother.
5. CU hires from the mid majors.

Winning football does not appear to be a priority above many factors when compared to the likes of the top name programs. Our admin doesn't have the stomach for that cost or the moral hazzards that come with those caliber players. CU, after all, does not have trouble attracting students.

:stupid:

I'm not too worried, because NuMac seems to be a pretty highly respected coach in CFB circles. If we had just installed Embree with no HC background and the alumni card and maybe the backing of some significant donors, I could see some ADs being pretty worried about tying themselves to the situation. Where we are now, a new AD would probably look at NuMac and say "that's a good coach - we've got a shot at turning things around with him. And if not, he is somebody the CU community isn't going to go nuclear over if we have to move on in a few years." There's really not that much more you can ask for, aside from taking over an AD where the FB program is already winning....

Chiming in to echo the sentiment expressed above that this may be viewed as a positive by a prospective AD in the job security dimension. They won't be held accountable for the football team's performance under MM.

They absolutely will. Football brings in the money to support other sports.
