Who will red shirt?

I think we will play 10 deep in terms of players that get quality minutes next year, and we will redshirt 2 players:

For guards, I think we will redshirt one of the following three players: Eli Staltzer, Xavier Talton, or Jaron Hopkins. I don't know how often a Sophomore gets a redshirt year if there isn't an injury situation, so I expect it is most likely to be Hopkins. For forwards, my guess is George King, just based on the buzz on these boards that we have been reading.

Here is my take on definite starters, occasional starters, and backups who get significant playing time next year:

Redshirting 4*'s is playing with fire. Someone has to redshirt, my guess is King and Stalzer

Guys, there is zero reason to redshirt Stalzer. It's not going to happen.

Stalzer is going to have 4 years in the program so better to make them 4 years where he is eligible to play versus 3 years of eligibility and 1 year as a RS. Unless of course he wants to save one year of eligibility after he graduates as a senior and can transfer to another school and not sit out a year.

Tad keeps recruiting over the prior class. That isn't a reason to redshirt a kid. Top kids play. Bottom kids transfer or sit.

^^This^^

I think Eli brings some value to the team but RS him makes no sense even if he plays minimal minutes. He is pretty close to his ceiling as a player, a RS year isn't going to make him better. His value is also replacable. Guys who are heady players but a little small and slow are a dime a dozen. I'm sure Tad would rather take his chances on who he can get to fill the scholly.

Not sure that makes sense there. You get 4 years of eligibility whether you redshirt or not. It's a matter of 4 and done or 4+1, extending the time he is here by a year, while CU foots the extra year. That will not happen.

We won't know until the fall. The kids will practice and if they have a tough time playing defense or in the classroom, Tad will ask them if they want to redshirt.

King's the youngest and was close to doing a prep year. For that reason alone, he's my best guess. Similarities to the Wes "Beast" Gordon situation last year.

They'll decide this on the court, though.

Tad won't force anyone to redshirt. Looking at the roster, I agree that it doesn't make sense to redshirt Stalzer or Talton. I'm very high on Talton anyways and expect him to improve from his freshman year. Redshirting only makes sense if a player isn't expected to get a lot of minutes and they have a lot of room to get better or if the team's depth at the position will be notably weaker in future years.

We are very deep at the 2 or 3 with Jenkins, Fletcher, Hopkins, King all being new additions. There's not enough minutes for everyone. I personally think King and/or Hopkins could benefit from a redshirt. Both have high ceilings imo. And both probably don't get much more then 5-10 minutes as a freshman, especially if Jenkins makes as big of an impact as some hope

Im pretty sure that unless something drastic happens to the mayor (Injury or a richard roby style regression) that he will be gone next year. I'm also pretty confident that most of the people on this board feel the same way.
If hopkins redshirted, that would leave talton & stalzer as backups, but could create a killer back court in 14/15 with booker, hopkins and collier.
I think if anyone gets redshirted, it will come from those playing wing because we are so deep there.
My first guess (because of his late sign and thoughts about prep school & academic issues when he got to HS) is king. as for the second (if that even happens) i've got no idea.

I think we are going to have to redshirt 2 no matter what. We really need to balance the class out. Obviously 6 Freshman is too many and so is 5. If we take 2 for the '14 class and redshirt 2, than we will have 4 soph's and 4 freshman for '14-'15.

Just a guess -- King and Thomas.

I'm thinking that Thomas will be the most ready to contribute, plus he may be more suited to providing some minutes guarding in the post.

It would be wise for Stalzner to redshirt, because Jaron Hopkins is the real deal and will get quality backup minutes.

My hope is that King and Stalzer will redshirt. I think Stalzer's can develop into a reliable shooter down the road, aka Knutson.

What does Stalzer get out of red shirting?

Where does this keep coming from? The arguments against Stalzer redshirting are all valid. It would be idiotic to redshirt Stalzer.

I don't want Stalzer to redshirt. He needs to get through the program as quickly as possible. He is the only player that doesn't really belong at this level IMO. I hope he proves me wrong, but I haven't seen anything yet to indicate otherwise. People are hoping he becomes a 3pt specialist, but I'm not seeing it.

I think Talton has potential, and he can be a real good backup PG his junior/senior years to Collier. I believe that Boyle has recruited over both players already, and I believe one will probably transfer out because of lack of playing time.

Reshirting in basketball is rare. THis isn't football. Football players need to gain strength and size to contribute at most positions before playing.

On the other hand, basketball isn't really a physical sport like football, so players can contribute right away more frequently. I remember Durant couldn't do one rep on the bench press, and he was unstoppable in college. That says a lot.

None of the frosh are too skinny to contribute. None of the frosh have any academic problems except King qualifying late. King showed tremendous improvement his junior/senior years, so he might be finally taking his academics seeriously. I hope so. Boyle might give him a redshirt just to prepare him for the college level academics as Gordon did last year.

I can't wait to hear about the battles in camp this summer/fall. Minutes will be tough to come by, and our bench will be excellent compared to years past. Our practices will be harder than games! When was the last time you could say that about our bball team?

Idiotic??? If you say so. He wasn't ready last year and he could use a year to mature and work on his jumper and ball handling skills. In fact, Talton could use a redshirt as well, but I think he's better than Stalzer at this point.

I also believe there won't be a lot of minutes for Stalzer or King. What is so idiotic? Playing 3 mins per game, or redshirting, saving a year of eligibility while honing your craft?

Boyle said himself he wanted a "redshirt program" to help build the program.

Yes, you are being dumb.

You are trading a 2017 scholarship, which is potentially a 3/4* prospect to give a 1/2* 5 minutes per game type player an extra year. Hopefully Stalzer makes a positive contribution to the program over the next three years, but that math will never add up. It is a zero sum game.

Is Josh Scott far enough along in bulking up for his sophomore year? May need to give him the redshirt so he can have an extra season to put that weight on. Also, on the matter of Ski's outside shooting and his confidence: Could a redshirt year benefit getting his mojo back? Did redshirting Coach A make him concerned about his lack of recruiting time and spur his decision to transfer to a smaller school?

Honestly, the fact that we are in mid-June talking about which basketball players should be considered for a redshirt and no football threads are speculating the same for any player not named Sefo Liufau tells me everything about the direction both programs have gone. We should probably at least wait until the fall semester starts.

LOL! :bang:

I hope Stalzer wouldn't take sitting on the bench for 4 years. if he doesn't get any better it might be better for him transfer. But I think he has potential.

You're not getting it. Tad is recruiting above Stalzer already. Nothing against the kid, but redshirting him means he's taking a scholarship from a more talented player down the line.
