I don't care if he is 6'3", I care if he plays 6'3".

My real hope is that Wood has taken the job by the throat and will run with it. That said having a guy who has some experience, even if at the JC level and can execute the offense as a back-up makes sense. You rarely ever go through a season without using more than one QB and it will be good to have a kid who has been under fire competing for us.

I will not be shocked if Gehrke wins the starting job. In fact I am going to predict today that Gehrke will be the starting QB by the end of Fall camp.

Based on how Wood played the second half of spring ball I would. What makes you so confident?

big bang has evaluated Wood thoroughly based on video of his play in Europe last summer and knows he can't play and never will improve enough to play. Also, he's mad about Hirsch.

I for one would be knocked on my ass if Gerhke wins the job. I mean, I think he'll lock up the #2 spot but he's a guy who wasn't pressured much at Scottsdale and still only completed 52%. I know HCMM says he's accurate... and maybe his receivers sucked or Scottsdale had a high risk offense but he doesn't really look ready to me. Wood is in an offense that suits him. HCMM is going to modify it to fit his personnel, but still... Wood's athleticism plays well in a pistol offense.

Not to mention the fact that Wood and PRich are building a rhythm. I'd be absolutely floored if the Buffs hit the reset button on offense by handing the reigns to Gerhke.

Think most of us would tend to agree with you. BB2 has something personal going on against Wood. If Gehrke wasn't here, he'd tell you that Dillon or Sefo or even Schrock/Dorman would be his pick to win the starting gig. Just one of those things.

I have no problems with Connor Wood. I will support him if he is named starter. The problem I have is folks turning on Hirschman, to declare the Wood starter. It was not necessary to tear down another player to promote Wood. I am looking forward to a an exciting QB competition in the fall.

I stand corrected.

I don't recall many people "turning on Hirshcmann" unless you consider making truthful and reasonable assessments of strengths and weaknesses turning on him. Many of us here would have been very happy had Nick turned out to be the answer but unfortunately for a variety of reasons he didn't take charge of the job.

To criticize him for having a lack of mobility, for being a little slow getting the ball out, especially under pressure, and for not seeing certain things happening on the field is not "turning on" him. Had Nick been clearly the best option M2 would have declared him the starter. As it turned out in the eyes of the coaches that didn't happen so Nick made a decision to move on. I have nothing but well wishes for him in his future.

Who tore down Hirsh on this board?? And the coaches declared Wood the starter, not posters on this board.

So you're tearing down Wood to.. promote Hirschman? Who left on his own volition? To Akron? ?

I liked Hirsch, he had a nice arm, but his career will always be hanging on those glass metatarsals...

While the staff didn't name a starter after the close of Spring ball, Hirschmann and anyone who watched closely (and had a brain in their head) could see that Wood had taken a formidable lead over the pack. So while the press reported we lost our co-#1, we in fact, lost a backup. Nick didn't leave here because he wasn't assured of the job, he left here knowing he had lost the job. At least he knew that in his heart.

Connor Wood played the 2nd half of the spring flawlessly. He can make every throw and he didn't make mistakes. It was REALLY impressive. I say that with reserve though, as he looked awful in EB's offense. I suspect the staff had a sit-down with him about his "pressing" and they built his confidence up. He came out after break and was very, very good.

Wood was throwing against 3rd and 4th string Corners, with no pass rush. I wouldn't have named Wood the starter or made any reasonable assessment to name Wood the starter. Most of the playbook was not even featured in the spring game. The stats were close enough as a fan not to make any reasonable assessment that Wood had taken a formidable lead over the pack. I hope Gerkhe pushes Wood. Prove the Internet coaches wrong again.

Again, you do realize it was the actual football coaches who named Wood the starter, not the "Internet coaches"? Please tell me you understand that.

Throughout spring practice Wood and Hirsch ran the same plays, threw to the same recievers, and against the same dbs and defenses. While the coaches didn't say it specifically it was obvious from the rotations, from what the coaches did say, what their teammates said, etc. that Wood had taken a significant lead.

Saying that Hirsch was behind Wood doesn't mean that we didn't/don't like him. I wish he had stayed to provide solid depth in the event that Wood is hurt or doesn't perform as expected. That said for BB2 anything short of Hirsch being named the starter would not fit his perception of what was going on.

Now we know the real reason that Bohn was fired, he hired M2 when he had the ultimate expert available in BB2.

Great call on making this its own thread.

I firmly believe that Hirschman left because he saw the writing on the wall. He knew that Wood had the inside track, and, because college athletes have so few years with which to play football he transferred. I don't blame Nick, I'm not going to crap on him because he doesn't want to be a backup. He wants to play, so he went to Akron.

Wood looked great, he's picking up the offense, he's developing rapport with PRich. If he doesn't start game one, it will be a really big deal. I wish Gerhke the best, but if he starts this coming season it will be because something seriously wrong has happened. I hope he settles into a role as a capable backup who knows the offense. As a Sophomore I expect him to back up Wood for two seasons and then fight with Sefo or Apsay or Dillon for the #1 job.

It was obvious based on what statement from the coach? . It was obvious based on the stats from all of the scrimmages and the spring game that it was a tie, no clear leader.

Anyone watching those scrimmages could tell the #1, it's that simple. You keep trying to complicate the argument when there is no reason to do so.

co-starter, they didn't say Wood had a formidable lead.

Never heard of a co-starter at QB, can you play 2 QBs at once, or is that like a co-ordinator?

I have eyeballs, so it was plain as day to me who the more effective QB was during the spring, and with Hirsh transferring to Akron I think it was plain as day to him and the rest of the team as well. It's a shame because starter or not, he likely would have played this year and we could have used a solid backup instead of having to roll the dice on another JC.

I saw a QB throw deep balls on 3rd string Corners, with no pass rush. Obviously not every one saw Wood as the number 1 QB during spring ball.

Call it the "rifle offense". Two QB's line up four yards behind the guards (LQ and RQ). There's a deep back (TB) seven yards directly behind the center. The offense always features an H-back who can go in motion for blocking or pass catching. He's usually behind the LOS. Two WR's light right up on the line.

And Hirschman faced the same defense, what's your point? Short of bringing in Alabama for a scrimmage, this is what we and the coaches have to go on.

Why do people even bother trying to use logic with BB, especially WRT Hirsch/Wood? You are wasting your time. Logic and on-field performance doesn't come into it with that dude.

Move on for god sakes. Hirsch left, on his own, because he did not win the starting job. Case closed. BB if you have such a hard-on for Hirsch, than why don't you just switch to a fan site for Akron Zips or whatever they are?
