I'm not ready for another round of realignment but at the same time, if our OOC schedule consists of only P5 schools (Big 12, B1G, ACC, SEC, and Pac-12), then I'm in FULL support of this. Why?

1. No more CSU in football.

This would mean we could be playing our former conference mates more often and I would rather do that than play CSU. We are not their ATM machine!

2. No more FCS schools.

This would be great for us...no need for CSU-wannabes to celebrate wins over the mighty Buffs.

3. B1G & Pac-12 scheduling alliance would be back on. SEC no longer allowed to duck west coast trips.

I'm tired of the SEC fattening up on FCS schools to pump up their W-L record. The B1G already is heading in that direction and I believe the Pac-12 won't be far behind.

4. Playoffs

I think we would have an eight team playoff. Five conference championships plus three wild cards. There can be only one wildcard team from each conference.

5. Players get paid! End of NCAA!

Anyone hear the Big 12 commish this morning? He said if football & basketball players are going to get paid, every other student athlete deserves the same. This would probably mark the end of the NCAA as we know it and I believe this will be a good thing.

I know we have been hearing about some form of emancipation from the NCAA for years but this one seems somewhat credible. Although I doubt it would happen as fast as the article suggests (6 months).

This would change the game forever and absolutely create haves and have-nots. Even the possibility of this occurring soon could immediately cause more realignment as there are some big time programs that would be out of the Div. 4 model right now that probably deserve to be in.

I like a lot about what they are suggesting as like many fans, I don't like a lot of things about how the NCAA has run things. But one I do not like is a potential unlimited amount of payments to athletes. I would think that creates an unfair advantage within the new league. At a minimum they'd have to implement a luxury tax like the NBA has if they are going to allow unlimited payment to players.

Love that luxury tax idea. The money from the luxury tax could go to cover scholarships for players who never make it to the NFL or injury settlements.

I'm not too worried about any current Big 5 schools being kicked out of Division IV and the European style of promotion and relegation will not work because the newer programs would struggle to comepte and end up being back at where they came from. Just look at Utah's first two seasons in the PAC and TCU's first season in the Big 12...the Horned Frogs even lost to KU in football.

More regulation has been a hindrance to college sports and this forced schools to spend more money on enforcement staffs within the school.

They will never be able to just pay football and basketball players. It isn't an NCAA issue. It's a Title IX issue.

Those schoosl can easily cut some sports if necessary to pay for the other sports. It's never popular and messy but it will get done.

Another suggestion out there is that the athletes could become part time students and schools would not have to pay full tuition...especially out of state tuition. By the time their four years are up, they would most likely have already met the general core requirements for the school they are going to and then they can focus on getting their major in just two short years. That gives them more time to make up their mind on what major they want and also gives them the opportunity to sample different fields before they decide on their major. Those students could also hold down part time jobs if they don't feel like they are earning enough.

EDIT: $1,000.00 per month along with all school costs including room & board would be very doable.

FYI reading other articles about the topic, it doesn't sound like secession is being considered. More like a separate division still under the NCAA but with more authority given to the conference commissioners and less to the NCAA.

"I have not heard from a single commissioner or even athletic directors on an individual basis that believe another organization other than the NCAA is the right approach for us."

so ...

How many schools would be in a conference ?
What 'big' schools would be out of luck if this were to happen ?

I'm all for it. It makes total sense to create another division. If it takes 4 or 5 years to complete, I hope that CU is back to some level of competitiveness. I doubt we'd ever be on the outside looking in, but it doesn't sound like fun to be in the cellar of "Division 4" and going O-12 every year.

Every sport should be evaluated for its income and student athletes should be paid accordingly. This is not a communist country.

On the west side of the country I'd think that Boise finds a way in, but schools like CSU, Nevada, Air Force, UNM and Utah St don't make it.

I'd love for the Pac-12 to go in that direction too. The SEC needs to get rid of their games against the FCS then we will see how big of a fraud that conference really is.
You are right that they manipulate their rankings this way but the SEC is not a fraud.
For the second straight year, only two BCS conferences posted winning records against teams from the other BCS conferences and Notre Dame.

The SEC and Big 12 were the only two over .500.

The SEC was 14-9, which included a 6-3 mark in bowl games. The Big 12 was 9-6, which included a 4-5 record in bowl games.

The SEC is overrated (I argued this for the better part of a few weeks on this board:lol:), but that conference is not a fraud.

The sad hung is the vast majority of their conference could be in the top 3 of ours.

Baby steps. The NCAA is on borrowed time. I'm not sure if I like that. Not that I have anything but utter contempt for those hypocritical assholes, but I worry about what might replace them.

Can't wait to hear Larry Scott's opening remarks. All the Big 5 BCS commissioners appear to be on board with a message to the NCAA that major reforms are coming their way whether they like it or not. Given Scott's recent track record as a visionary in aggressively expanding the Pac 10, establishing the Pac network and the TV rights deals, I bet you he has some good ideas about what should and will happen regarding the BCS conferences and football. Although we have sucked at FB lately I am glad we are in the Pac 12 with Scott at the helm.

Edit: Just found this quote from Scott in yesterday's WSJ:
In an interview with the Journal, Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott confirmed there is a "collective sense that we need transformative change."

I'm not going to lie...much better than being in the MWC 2.0 with KU, KSU, ISU, and Mizzou along with the MWC at that time.

I'll be honest, this stuff makes me a little nervous - mostly due to the fact that CU can't seem to keep up with the "Joneses" and it only seems to be getting worse. I just don't want the Pac-12 to turn around and say "Utah, CU, WAZZU - you're out. Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State - you're in."

That's not Larry Scott's style, nor is it the style of the other schools in the conference. Stanford, Cal, UCLA etc don't want to dirty themselves with the likes of UT, OU, OSU. The PAC schools are all going to make a lot of money. No need to upset the apple cart, so to speak.

You forget that the Colorado media market was a part of the calculation for the current PAC-12 media deal. Any move to "Division 4" would not change that fact. Also, the Big-12 has their own fat media contract. All the Big-12 and PAC-12 schools will be in. Much more likely is that each conference goes to 14 or 16 teams. BYU would want in, as would Boise, so they might go to the PAC or the Big.

Also, this happens one of two ways--with the agreement of the rest of the NCAA or unilaterally by tend "division 4" schools. If by agreement, the rest of Div I-A (or whatever acronym we are using now) is only going to accept incremental change, and is not going to agree on getting shut out. If they take unilateral action, there is going to be an anti-trust challenge launched by the have-nots that is going to embroil "Division 4" for years, which may include an injunction that would forcefully maintain the status quo for years.

Right, but if we can't even improve on our own, beat-down, stadium...how are we supposed to have engh money to start paying players this stipend?
