How much running for Connor Wood?

Do the coaches let him loose every once in a while or will they be more concerned about keeping him healthy?

Very good question. It will probably depend on how they feel about the back-up.

They are probably going to have to do some if for no other reason than to try to force defenses to respect that he can do it.

We also are faced with a severe lack of guys who can make plays, PRich could be one for us but the rest of our guys are mostly players who are dependent on others to be able to perform. Pow isn't a game breaker, our other recievers are mostly the "possesion type" none of our backs have shown the ability to turn a play that isn't well blocked into long gains.

Wood may be one of the few plus athletes we have. It may also make him a little more comfortable if he can have some success running as well.

Balancing all that if he gets hurt what happens next.

If he can get to the edge off of a fake or zone read, I'd let him do that every so often. And I'd tell him to get to the sideline and any significant yardage he can get vertically after that is gravy. It would keep everybody honest.

I see Wood running in close games or when games are close. Aside from that, he'll be coached to throw it away.

Will be forced out of the pocket early and often. We'll see what his exit strategy is and what his feet can do very soon.

This. Like the first pass play of the first game.

If I were coaching the opposing D, I would blitz the living :censored: out of him.

I prefer only for scrambling but almost no designed QB runs. At this point he is likely miles ahead of his backup and not worth risking it. Just the threat of him scrambling when a play breaks down can help keep the defenses honest without putting him at more risk.

Take it when it's there, few designed runs at times. Hell, lets see how he runs when it's live.

2-3 designed runs per game, 2-3 read options per game, almost never more than 5 combined. (for comparison's sake, Oregon's QB only runs it an average of 8-10 per game. They will make teams honor the threat, but won't base the offense around it.

In this offense, how much he runs will be somewhat determined by how accurate he's able to throw on the move. If they can roll him out with confidence Connor will be able to deliver the ball on time to the right spot, then we'll see a lot more of that and - by extension - he'll end up running more as he takes what the defense gives him. If he's not accurate when mobile, they'll keep him in the pocket and he'll run a lot less.

I'll go with my hopes and say that Connor gains over 200 yards on the ground this year.

1 or 2 per game, not counting QB sneaks. That's the hope anyways. If we start seeing a lot of designed runs after the first game (or half) it means either the running or receiving game isn't getting the job done and they need an extra wrinkle.

Interesting comment Paul Richardson made in his Pac12 Media Day interview: "I can't wait to see the results of the QB competition" or something to that effect..... Might there be a competition?

I'd bet Wood runs it some. My observations have been that these Spread Option QBs seem to not get hurt more (and perhaps less) than Pocket passers.

Heard that comment as well, I think it was in the Ralphie Report interview when asked about his chemistry with Connor Wood. PRich seems to be pretty media savvy, so I thought he might have been trying to toe the company line and reaffirm that there really is an open competition for the job. In any event, I think you run him some to allow for another dimension to the offense, but we obviously don't need him getting carried away.

Not sure I like my answer, but he will be running more often than planned, a lot more. Pressure is going to test how well he throws while moving and to see how elusive he can be.

I think it will depend on the game, but the CSU game will give us a good hint. That defense is ripe to be exploited on the edges.

Ringo's chat today has a lot about Sefo. Implied that he thinks Sefo will be taking the starting job from Wood as soon as possible (although did not imply this season). Did not seem to think Sefo would redshirt. Said Rip Scherer called Sefo "the best person he recruited in his career" (I thought the last staff was all about Dillon?). Also, some jokers spent the chat discussing their DirecTV vs Dish pricing packages. http://www.buffzone.com/cu-news/ci_23753196/live-chat-cu-buffs-beat-writer-kyle-ringo

I don't know why Ringo even bothers with these chats, he says NOTHING. It's a steady stream of "well I think...", "I haven't talked to _______ in a while", or "I'm not sure, I'll ask next time I see that person." Half this board could have run that chat and provided the same information.

Since Kyle hasn't seen Sefo throw a single ball, or take a single snap, then you'll pardon me from taking his word as gospel. That said, if he is a weapon, then maybe some use in goal line packages would be a good starter set of plays for him to run.

See him? Ringo don't need no stinkin' seeing...he got the goods without it.

I'm sort of expecting Mac has him throwing lots of short quick hitters & high percentage passes before he turns him loose.

Agree. Would think there would be a lot of zone read oppurtunities in that game.

i don't think they are going to start the season worrying about protecting wood. they are going to be thinking about what's working and what isn't. if they find themselves moving the ball via wood running, then he will run. if they don't, then he will throw. a lot. i think the whole run/pass balance is going to be a work in progress from week to week. the staff doesn't know what they've got in live action -- the team is in a new offense. again.

sigh. going to be a tough year, i think.
