Allocation of Coaching Resources

Embree really had this wrong. He had two position coaches for the DL. One for the LBs. And one for the DBs, who was doing double duty as the DC. He had two guys splitting time coaching about 16.5% of the plays each. 4 coaches total on Defense, for a Offensive Minded Head Coach....

These days, our defense is often in a 4-2-5, sometimes more DBs than 5.

2012 actual stats:

Position #plays percentage
DB 3919 43%
DL 2990 33%
LB 2146 24%
Total 9055

source

So Embree had his DC coaching 43% of the plays. While 3 guys coached 57% of the plays.

HCMM, unlike Embree, is a Defensive minded coach.
HCMM has his DC coaching the LB position, a mere 24% of the Defensive plays.
He devotes 2 coaches to the DB positions.

The allocation of resources makes ALL THE SENSE in the world. Surprised more teams don't do this. Given that your best Special Teams guys are coming from your DBs and LBs as well, more coaching there on things like proper pursuit angles and tackling form, can only pay off. The DL guys just play the DL.

Agreed with the coaching allocation...defenses are now having at least five DBs...might as well get with the times.
