CU pushing the pace

- Colorado coach Tad Boyle said his team won’t be afraid to push the pace next season. The Buffaloes — who many believe will be the top challenger to Arizona in the PAC-12 — have the potential to be an explosive offensive team. “We’re going to play faster,” Boyle told me this week. “We’re going to be really long and spread people out. We won’t be as good defensively though.” No they won’t, but Colorado is really going to be able to score the ball. The Buffaloes return starting guards Spencer Dinwiddie and Askia Booker as well as sophomore wing Xavier Johnson, who according to Boyle is ready to explode. “You could see at the end of the year how talented he is,” Boyle said of Johnson, who averaged 8.9 PPG and 4.8 RPG last season as a freshman. “The great thing about Xavier is the bigger the game, the better he plays.” Boyle said he regularly plans to use Johnson as an undersized power forward, and is also really excited about 6-7 wing Chris Jenkins who red shirted this past season. Colorado’s non-conference slate includes home games with Harvard and Kansas as well as neutral site contests versus Baylor and Oklahoma State.

Interesting, I have lots of thoughts on this.

A) We hear this every off-season and we hear it continually through-out the year, but we have yet to see them really push the pace.

B) Under Tad CU's pace/possessions a game has been 67.9 (104th nationally) in 2011, 65.7 (189th) in 2012 and 65 (216th) in 2013. Continually slower and never in the top 25%.

C) Avg possession length is also getting longer 2011 - 17.1 seconds, 2012 17.5 second, 2013 - 17.9 seconds.

D) In order to really push the pace you need to get easy baskets, easy baskets come from good defense, as Tad said it's highly unlikely our defense is going to be as good as last year. Another way to push the pace and create more possessions is to score early in the shot-clock, in order to that you need something resembling a half-court offense. CU does not have that.

Taking our trending of playing slower each year, average possessions getting longer and defense not being as good, I'm going to take the I'll believe it when I see it approach.

This move seems against the culture he's created, so I doubt we'll have much success trying to speed things up.

jg, do you think we could move to a full press? Any stats on playing a press on defense on how it relates to offense?

I think Boyle has slowed the team down each year because he has never had a bench, and the bench has gotten worse each year. Last year we really only had 5 players that could score consistently. That's not good. This is Boyle's first year that he will have true depth, and I believe we can go a legitimate 8-10 deep.

I think we will see more pressing, trapping, etc in Boulder, which will create plently of opportunities for easy buckets and increase our scoring output. I don't expect Boyle to press all the time, but he will do way more of that, and I think we can get our scoring numbers up to the 2010 team due to that change or really close to it.

I have a feeling that we'll see the team take more chances defensively this year. With the length we'll have on the perimeter, backed by shot-blocker in Gordon, I expect to see guys jump into passing lanes more aggressively in an attempt to generate more TO's. We won't be as good in straight man to man defense, but I do see an opportunity to increase pace that way.

Any time you lose the conference defensive player of the year, you will not be as good defensively. However, I think he's sandbagging a bit. Boyle builds teams from the defense out. This will still be a defensive minded team and that will cause a lot of transition opportunities.

Pace will be faster somewhat due to schedule. USC will play a lot faster, for example, which will impact CU's stats. I also buy in to the argument that Tad has a bench he can trust this year. Anything beyond a 6-man rotation was forcing it last season.

Just don't give me the 2010-11 defense. Please. Even with us scoring 80ppg like we were back then.

I expect pace to go up from last year. I'll believe any drastic change when I see it.

And still crossing my fingers for better movement on offense. Hopefully optimistic.

All of this will be interesting to see this year, if Tad's style has be dictated by personnel or if it's actually his defensive scheme. CU under Tad has played pretty straight up D, hasn't denied the ball on the wing or in the post. I'm all for denying and jumping passing lanes, but that does put a lot of ownership on Scott and most likely Gordon to rotate over when a guy gets beat going for a steal. Communication and good team D is what that philosophy is all about, can't wait to see the style they play this year.

I prefer a medium pace

I just want to see an offense this year. Know that our personnel made it more difficult in the past, but with the depth that we currently have, would like to see us use the altitude to our advantage more

Yeah, I agree that, one way or the other, this is the year we truly find out who Tad is as a coach. I tend to think he's been somewhat limited the last couple of years due to depth/personnel, but there are no excuse this season.

Tad's created a culture that focuses on what the talent he has, needs to do to win games. First year, with Burks, up-tempo and let Burks dog it on "D". Second year with the big scorers gone re-emphasize "D" and run a more patterned offense with Tomlinson at point, when the Mayor was learning. Third year: tenacious "D" and boarding with Dre.

This year with the offensive weapons available and the length on "D", I'd be shocked if the tempo wasn't increased; particularly when the new coach comes aboard. Kearney was known for an up-tempo game at Holy Cross---in fact, that was likely his downfall there!
