Not sure why this didn't hit the newsroom.

Because it's good news. And, as if we have to be reminded, the local "media" aren't too fond of publishing good news about CU. However, I am surprised that they haven't picked it up to spin it - ala Ringo - and document how foolish CU looks for having fired a guy for doing his job more efficiently than anyone else in the country.

Credit belongs in no small part to Mark Wetmore and Heather Boroughs. These two are responsible for mens and women's outdoor and indoor track plus mens and women's cross country. Six sports that start in the fall, run through the winter, and finish in the spring.

These running programs have delivered NCAA champs and olympians like Shalaya Kipp and Emma Coburn and turned CU into Steeplechase university. The XC team is expected year in and year out to not only win conference titles but also deliver podium finishes at the national event.

Wetmore just delivers results. He avoids controversy. He does not have enough scholarships to field a deep team.

Most fans are vaguely aware of CU's running reputation, but there is not wide scale appreciation of this elite, well run piece of the athletic department that runs a world class operation on a shoestring budget.

Running facilities include an aged and decrepit Balch field house, a track that is out on the east campus without great locker or training rooms, and a cross country course down south that uses porta potties, not indoor plumbing. The uniforms are minimalist and the equipment needs are limited to shoes and a few ounces of clothing.

Without Wetmore, these accolades would not have been bestowed upon CU. Bohn's role in this was to let Wetmore be Wetmore.

Rokos' skiing program also shares credit for the natty, but that sport has less competition.

I've never understood why the Denver media doesn't get behind the only BCS program in the state. It's no wonder that CU has always struggled to fill a relatively small stadium, even in the highly successfully era of the 90's. Sure, Denver is a Bronco town and always will be but there's no reason that the Broncos and CU football can't compliment each other. It's not like a highly-successful CU football team would take away from the support of the Broncos.

With how much the metro area has grown over the past 20 years and the decent attendance numbers we have had over these last seven years (think upper 80%'s is the average) I'd be surprised if we had trouble filling Folsom for games not against FCS teams or teams like Hawaii, but I agree with your comment about the Denver media.

The bizarre defense of the Bohn era continues.

But it's still kinda fun to win an award for most efficient management in the wake of firing that management. Am I more excited about our new trajectory? You bet I am. But this news fits nicely when woven into the hairshirt I have learned to favor.

If management is efficient that leaves a program $30 million in the hole then I guess it is a really meaningful award.

A few weeks ago everyone was peeved at Ceal for the 10% belt tightening claiming it made CU look poor. Well this award in my opinion is worse than that and it seems to justify not having more funds for the AD. It is pretty clear to me why CU is not shouting this from the roof tops.

It's clear to me that you didn't understand that argument.

Just cracking up that Ringo actually tried to write a "gotcha!" column with this award. He must really be bored with his job these days.

The sports that are competing fore National Championships, one, are relatively low budget sports and, two, are sports that are part of our state's sports culture. They win more because of that than anything the administration does. Bohn had little to do with there success and a lot to do with the lack of success of the football program and the budgetary problems which made this "award" possible.

i had mixed feelings about bohn but thought he deserved to ride out his most recent football hire. at least the financial situation and the basketball hires bought him some time....despite the hawkins/embree abomination combination.

i still say hawkins was the right hire at the time, just turns out it wasn't a good hire. we got fooled. he was going to get a bigtime BCS job. lot of people would. i supported JE and EB but i didn't like that hire at all.

Boulder Creek path is where the XC team spends the majority of their training time. Mix in some other trail runs and you never set foot in Balch. I can ask some buddies that ran for CU. I know these trails are not CU facilities but we use the campus location to our advantage.

I believe Mark Wetmore's office is located in the Balch Field House Annex. Practices and stretching takes place in the fieldhouse, as does some coaching. Then the runners hit the trails all over boulder, with the boulder creek trail serving as a portion of the circuit. At least that's where it was when I ran XC and track.

Dal ward is so crowded that I doubt track has moved the coaching offices. If you know differently, speak up.

Then there is the indoor track season in the winter. The Potts invitational indoor meet is in Balch.

To say runners never set foot in Balch is just plain wrong.

:yeahthat:

To your point, Ceal calling for an across the board 10% reduction makes this award look counterproductive. Some may view Ringo's article and say to themselves if their doing this much with less, then my donation to the AD doesn't need to be as much. Unfortunately, it also puts a feather in DiStiffs hat.
