Joining most of the rest of the staff coach MacIntyre now has his own official twitter account: @CoachMikeMac He's already closing on fan favorite Troy Walters for the follower lead among all coaches.

Let's hope his lasts longer than the previous coach's.

Twitter is a source of entertainment due to stupidity, otherwise it is basically worthless and more likely to do harm then good.

I beg to disagree. If you are referring to the way young kids and many college athletes use it to their detriment, you are correct. But more "mature" people are making very productive use of Twitter.

Twitter has even been found to be of assistance to first responders in emergency situations. If you use it to Tweet about getting laid last night or use racial slurs, not good. But like most things, it is only productive if you use it that way.

Used twitter during the waldo canyon fire and the black forest fire to keep track of it and keep my family updated about its location. Use it to keep tabs on my favorite teams. Use it for news from the university as well.

Also causes misinformation, speculation, and crap journalism to spread unchecked.

I stand corrected...to an extent. Twitter is useful for valid news alerts and notifications. In the hands of "celebrities" it is much more likely to cause trouble. I'm guessing guys like MM don't really tweet anyway and have a student ass. do it instead.

fify

Twitter is also very instrumental in the bastardization of the english language.

No, you can thank text messaging for that.

It started with texting, but twitter is also instrumental in that it also tends to reach a larger audience than texting and is actually designed for "public" consumption.

Right, but that has more to do with the unreliability of eyewitness accounts and selective perception than the tool itself, which is basically what S2S& Boyd said.

Again existed far before twitter, anyone remember pager code?

I'm going to feel safe in stating that twitter has done far more damage to the english language than pager code. Social media didn't really exist in the pager days.

Hell all of this has roots in proper shorthand but that is really here nor there, twitter didn't create the issue. Users wanting to be expedient and the existence of already know short hand taken from texting and page code when applied to a free publicly consumable medium made it visible.

Do you really do the damage if you simply facilitate the visibility of it?

That is actually a really good question.

Tini, you are still in school. Here is a paper topic for you.

Glad he is on Twitter. Needs to step up game to catch Walters (and others). Suspect these generic tweets are being done by a GA.
