True Frosh Jared Goff named Cal starter

From what I read in the spring, Kline had the strongest arm but was the least mobile. Goff the most mobile but the weakest arm. Hinder was in the middle on both. I didn't know he was out of the top 3 now. Cal legacy, though.

Hinder was the only upperclassman on the roster at QB (jr.). Everybody else is a Soph or Frosh. Looks like ride the pine time for Hinder. That's too bad.

Now I can't find where I read that, it is probably my bad. Seems he stayed at 3 this fall, not out of 3. Sorry.

FWIW, the red flags on Hinder were raised throughout that recruiting cycle. He tumbled down the position rankings.

Bold decision by Dykes because Kline was, according to rivals, the #2 QB in the nation in his recruiting year and popular with the team. [Internet] reports were that Goff was just making better/quicker decisions in practice and that his arm was strong enough. As for Kline's mobility, he was not a runner, but he is probably better throwing on the run.

Part of this might be due to the fact Goff's high school ran the offensive system taught by OC Tony Franklin (who does a lot of HS clinic in the summer), so he does have a head start on what is required. Hoping Kline will stick around at least this year because no one knows yet how practice performance will translate onto the field. But both players have 4 years of eligibility, so it would be a log jam no matter what. People are wondering if Kline can improve his decision process and grab the starting job, but with 3 ranked teams in the first 4 games, there is going to be a real urgency to run an efficient offense off the bat.

As for Hinder, he could transfer now and sit out a year, or graduate in the spring and transfer w/o sitting out. Hinder looked decent in scrimmages, Goff is really skinny... you never know who will finish the year.

Let's see how good he is without Gunnar Graham blocking for him.

If Hindler is on track to graduate it would make sense for him to stick around this year and do so. A transfer for next year and grad school would then make sense for both him and Cal

Problem for him is that I doubt he would be a high demand guy. His best options would probably be FCS type schools.

Hmmm.

Maybe the resident bear can enlighten us.

Both QBs are 4 star, elite 11, winners of awards & many accolades etc. What else do you want to know? Kline has a cannon for an arm and Goff ran the offense quickly and effectively with short passes and no interceptions. Both of them are talented. The other bear on this thread already stated everything pretty well though.

I doubt Hinder transfers. Both QBs will probably be used throughout the year with Hinder as backup. We'll see... Coach Dykes and staff are an amazing change from before and then some. Our other QBs are now receivers and they started using our biggest TE as a fullback on set plays. Hell, our tallest LB was used as a red zone receiver the other day! I wouldn't be surprised if they use our OL as TEs on certain plays. We have a brutal schedule but we'll be fun to watch-that much is certain.

Elite 11 eh? sorry dude, we know our fair share about how that can turn out.

Are we sure flukes is a cal grad. He seems to be having trouble with this whole internet thingy. Any Stanford guys lurking that can help him out?
