RK and whelan think mac may make the call on wood as soon today. He's also closing practices from Wednesday on until the Colorado state game at least.

Motivation for the backups? Or, close practices and turn up the blitzing pressure to see how he really handles it once he gets roughed up a little?
From the reports we have been getting-the backups are not really close to challenging Wood on a regular basis. Given the media proclaiming Wood as the starter almost already, it can't be for the element of "surprise" for CSU. Blitzing D? First of all it would be shocking if Sefo or Gehrke could outperform Wood that much in this category to win the job.

I don't get it. I would have thought he would want to give Wood as many snaps as possible going into his 1st start for the season and (2nd in his college career).

Does it have to be a public announcement re: naming a starting QB? I am sure the team knows (or has a good idea) who the starter is.

Wood is going to get the reps with the 1s and yes, it is mostly mind games for CSU.

Ugh. We tried this mind game before in 2009 and naming Cody the starter didn't end up mattering as we couldn't move the ball on our own field. I guess if they want to mask the fact that Wood is getting all the #1 reps in closed practices that's fine but it's disturbing that they need all this smoke for CSU. I doubt even the mighty lambs could be wondering who will march out behind center for the opening snap. They are likely studying every snap he took last year and know exactly what they need to do to get in his head.

It's nothing to get worked up about. I'm not even sure the opponent matters, just guessing MacIntyre doesn't feel the need to name an opening day starter.

I am with you on this-Duff could be right that it is to play games with CSU but everyone and their (little) brother knows Wood is in the driver seat to be the #1 QB-so where's the value. Why not make it public and get it over with?

I think Mac just wants the QBs to keep competing and pushing each other. Maybe he thinks by naming a starting, backup, etc., they might get complacent in their roles. Just a thought, but with how much he likes everyone to compete all the time, maybe this move is to keep pushing them so they keep the pressure on one another in order to foster improvement.

Indeed. In my Dan Hawkins childlike Pollyanna utopia I started the spring with far too much optimism and from there experienced more than expected transfers, dismissals, and injuries, especially since the initial new coach honeymoon was suspiciously almost too turmoil-free. It would be nice at the conclusion of public practices to give some official announcement as I believe Wood has earned the job and it would give the CU-friendly community something to rally around. Something to lead us out of the 9 months of uncertainty and give us a face to the program as the torch bearer at the most important position. We're all parched for the real thing to begin Sunday after next. After a lukewarm and sometimes outright disappointing August I feel making a QB announcement would give the Buff nation an injection of excitement we sorely need. Playing an underwhelming "rival" at an underwhelming neutral half-empty stadium isn't cutting it.

Didn't he do the same exact thing with Fales last year?

Yeah, MM doesn't really seem to put a premium on naming a early starter. It's fine with me, Wood has been getting all the 1st team reps all Fall and the second half of Spring, I don't think it's anything to worry about.

My thoughts exactly.

I think it keeps the pressure off Wood this way a bit. Instead of him being the declared leader of the offense, he can just keep competing. HCMM wants to keep expectations down because let's face it, CSU will bring live blitzes and a lot of pressure and nobody is sure how Wood will handle it. I think he will handle it by hitting PRich with a quick seam route over the middle that goes for 82 yards and CSU's head will spin. But I may also be fantasizing.

Nothing wrong with the HC keeping things low key on the outside.

This this good news to me and my limited knowledge. Seems like they should be picking starters, letting them get some chemistry, plan for CSU, install more of the offense etc.

Good move by Coach Mac not to name a starter now. Makes no sense to do so. Sounds like all the QBs are getting a lot of reps with the 1st team offense.

I have visions of CSU blitzing, easily slicing through our offensive line, and Wood folding. Could lead to another year with no QB...

With practices open, how much sandbagging has been going on? The reports of the last open scrimmage were that it looked disorganized and kind of disjointed. Now that they are closed, I'd expect things to focus on the first team and subs to get them sharp.

I think it is time to lock down practices. Not to mess with csu but, more to get some distraction off the players. They can really start game planning and get some series planned and repeat. This coaching staff seems to like repetition, that is what makes you react faster in game scenarios. Like the move Coach

I really think we are going to surprise people at the CSU game with our speed and game reactions, especially in the secondary. We do have athletes and we have some speed at various positions on the team, they just have not been put into places to succeed. Hoping that changes september 1st

My theory...not all that "revalationary" - Coach has picked his guy (probably Wood) and now wants to to instal the "serious" offense with people blabbering about what kind of plays we are/can run. Maybe even instal a little Sefo a al Freshman Tebow/Blake Bell.
