CSU game - the good, the bad, and the Ugly.

I was at the game and have not watched the Television version - some times that give you a different perspective.

Most will be in the good category.

The Good:

It was nice to get the win.

Connor Wood looked great. The team responded when the CSU came back which was good. Richardson obviously made a difference when on the field. The Oline gave good pass protection. Spruce also looked good.

The Bad:

I will call this minor bad. A couple of times there seemed to be a little confusion plays in the Red Zone - it seemed like they were have trouble getting players in the right alignment.

There was not much pressure on the CSU QB, would of liked to see a little more penetration from the DLINE.

Rushing game was very disappointing...without Goodson's end around our rushing was really bad. Did not like the Dive play to Tony Jones. RBs averaged less than 3 yards a carry. This has to improve.

Defense did not seem to figure out that crossing route very well.

The Ugly -

Of course it is the special teams. The punt and kickoff coverages had been an issue all day and got really bad as the game wore on. CU's own return game was not remarkable on limited opportunities.

Ugly Part II - nothing to do with the team but I fail to understand when I go to a Bronco game I get in right away and at the CU CSU game even without the bags it took us 30 minutes waiting in line to get into the game.

Ugly Part III - nothing to do with the team again but it is disappointing to me to see the mess in LOT C after the game, trash all over the place. Chalk it up to me being from a different generation but would it kill people to police their own trash...it certainly give a bad impression on CU fans IMO.

I was walking around the parking lot at 2am and it was destroyed (CU and CSU sides). I felt really bad but the guy cleaning it up was laughing and said, "Man you guys party hard."

I walked around to the south entrance..which sucked. Next time I will go to the West enterance. I think being closer to the entrance that is closest to busses and light rail was a bad choice.

Dude, I think most of your post got deleted somehow.

The mess in Lot C was awful. It looked like a freaking war zone. Having said that, I feel the need to point out that I had a big bag of garbage and I couldn't find a dumpster to put it in. The lack of large trash receptacles had more to do with that mess than people just being lazy/drunk jerks, IMO.

Your right, it probably wasn't the pickup truck filled with cases of keystone light and the 100 to 200 drunken students crowded around it spraying beer all around, throwing cans in the air watch them explode when they hit, and vommitting in between random parked vehicles. And that was an hour and a half before kickoff. The report I got from my group that stayed to finish off their drinks was that it grew larger as the start of the game drew near. They told me the good news was that the blood splatter from the fight that broke out didn't land on my vehicle.

We were parked about 100 feet directly south of the the Alumni Association area. I will agree that there were no trash containers anywhere nearby.

Sorry for another fan summary, but I just wrote this in an email chain with some buddies and thought i would share it here as well. Basically I brought the game down into three parts: The good stuff, some things to concern us, and the great situations that provided team growth as well as insight for fans to see how different we are from one year ago.

The game was just awesome. If you put together a list of pie-in-the-sky best case scenarios, the game may have exceeded many of them. Conner Wood has a solid performance...400 yards, 33-46, 3 tds 0 ints, great scrambling and great vision. PRich to have a solid game...fourth CU receiver to gain over 200 yards and second time himself, other receivers that allow us to support PRich (DD Goodson is a stud!), oh and along with that, a QB that distributes the ball all over the place, no turnovers. Defense and secondary to play well...held them to under 300 yards, 13 points on offense, solid secondary play, emergence of a star freshmen in Gillam. Etc.

No doubt there were issues too, but ones we can hopefully fix. A good defense had many chances to pick off Wood, he fluttered it up there a bunch. O line looks okay, but the pocket broke down quickly, and they didn't offer the backs much space to run through. Speaking of which, I was surprised by the little playing time Powell got in the second half, despite no apparent injuries, and then the incredibly lackluster effort put in by Tony Jones (why so little Abron?) I am almost done with TJ. He bounces around laterally behind the line rather than just hitting holes, and when he is in space completely slows down to a standstill when he approaches a tackler. I saw nothing inspiring there. The D line seemed to contain really well, but not the pressure you really want. Amazingly, I actually didn't think PRich played his best game. Two broken coverages, but a lot of missed receptions and inability to get space from coverage (other than when he had 40 yards of space haha). A few pretty odd offensive plays called during key moments (goal line play in second drive, some second half stuff that I thought led to a lot of punts, etc). Oh, and then there were the two ****ing returns for touchdowns!!

In the game we saw:

  • A sub-two minute drill to end the half and put some points on the board after a CSU touchdown.
  • Smart QB player where Wood kept his eyes down field despite a broken pocket, scrambling and having open space in front of him.
  • Thus, two big yardage plays, as well as...
  • A super long sustained drive with lots of 3rd down pick ups.
  • The team losing the lead in the second half and bouncing back to take it back, and then having the D respond in a big way with a turnover. You can't help but think recent Buff teams would have laid down several times in the second half and been done.
  • Long field goal opportunities for Oliver! Not to mention allowing him to used his left foot, hahah.
  • Defensive 3rd and 4th down stops. They were consistent and solid.

Go Buffs!

I only half agree with you...I think they should of been distributing trash bags like they do at games in Boulder. We gathered our trash and bagged it all, we had bags with us. But a lot of kids were out of control before the game - throwing beer and other stuff around, damaging vehicles, etc. But you are correct there were few dumpsters around.

I agree with you on Jones. I think Powell did get dinged a little bit.

Yeah, the students were pretty nuts. I can't argue against that. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that when the games are in Boulder, they have house parties pre-game. They don't all congregate in a huge parking lot pre-game and party. In Denver, the concentration of alcohol is pretty high. Lots of people, lots of liquor, lots of young people who really haven't learned how to handle their liquor yet. Not a good combination by any stretch.

I didn't see any damage to any vehicles, though. I was pretty close to where all the insanity was taking place. It was probably 50 feet directly South of where we parked.

As for the trash bags - we brought our own. Still didn't have any place to put them once they got full. I just dragged one bag over to a small trash can and left it there.

The most frustrating thing to me was our inability to blow there doors off when we had them down. One case in point comes to mind. Near midfield we picked up 7 on a first down. On the two subsequent plays we ran up the middle and failed to convert. The call on 3rd and one, Powell right up the middle, was uninspired. Especially with CSU stacking the box.

Also, maybe you analytical guys can respond, Christian Powell is a hard, tough runner. But he is just too slow to hit holes before they close and too slow to run outside. Our inability to put reassure on the perimeter is a concern to me. Without that weapon, teams are just going to clog up the middle.
