headline in todays Wall St Journal....Charlie Ergen willing to lose customers ( up to 30% short term) in order to provide cheaper service...... this is why I did not drop DTV for Dish just to get Pac 12 network.... these carriage disputes are going to become more and more common

These carrier disputes have been happening since the dawn of TV. What do you think the Pac-12 vs. DirectTV thing is? Ergen used to be a professional poker player, he won't fold until he has to. It's all mired in greed and the bottom line.

Interesting legal question....

say you have a 2 year contract and you rely on Dish providing this channel... can you get out of your contract?

I would think so.... but I bet they would still place your account with collections and you would have to deal with phone calls for a long time!

my "bet" is the espn networks might go dark for a short period of time then they settle

I think that would be great, anything that cuts down on ESPN's power is good in my eyes

Well ****!

Was thinking of switching from Uverse to Dish as this Uverse Pac 12 hold up is beginning to concern me.

But I cannot switch to Dish if they drop ESPN.

I cannot go to Brighthouse, my only other option, b/c it does not play nicely with my work VPN.

It looks like another year without the Pac Networks!

:pissed3:

Ok, now that I got all these free upgrades for not switching, where can we watch the game? If I am un able to make it to Boulder, what options are out there? stream on-line? TV? bars that have Pac12 network?

just in case.... but, more than likely, I will be watching Ralhie lead our new Buffs onto the greatest field ever

I've been a long time Dish customer, and this has happened quite a few times - every time it's cleared up within a day or two before or after the deadline.

Ergen was quoted that "this could be the big one....Disney (includes espn) wants like $7.00 per subscriber per month

It's a giant game of chicken. Ergen has played it many times before and never blinked.

Both have a lot to lose if it extends out but Disney has a lot more to lose. Disney is not only dealing with the customer carrier fee that is being argued over but also the loss of a huge number of TV sets which in turn can mean huge losses in advertising revenue. Even if they come back after a period of time they will have driven viewers to other channels like the new Fox Sports 1, etc. and there is always a danger that some of those viewers don't come back impacting long term ad revenues.

In the end they will likely have channels black for a few days and then an agreement will be reached which is much closer to what Dish offered than what Disney offered.

Disney "currently accounts for 40% of all programming fee's paid by Dish Network"...but only 15% of viewership totals according to Ergen

TBH, I very rarely watch any of the ESPN networks. But of course that goes up during football season because of college football and MNF.

For those without P12N...make a friend with someone who does have it through a carrier with internet viewing available (ie Xfinity). Have them set you up as an additional user with a login name and password. Someone did that for me on xfinity and I've been able to stream P12N online. I did just switch from Directv to Dish because I was tired of the forever promise that "we are negotiating." Plus it was time to dial back the bloated Dtv bill. And my Dish service includes Sling (might come in handy Sunday when I take the boy to LAX clinic and have two hours to kill and can watch some nfl, or, catch up on some work reading...hmmmm). Regarding the looming issue of Dish and ESPN, this is a BIG deal, methinks it gets worked out in decent time.

I have Time Warner. After all the CBS/Showtime brouhaha, it was only gone for about 2 weeks. It's back now. Yay SEC games!

I think it'll be interesting to follow this. It's going to blow to miss all of the CU and UW games they show. :cry:Oh wait!

The only time I watch ESPN is December Bowl games or March Madness. I'm not sure I even watch it then. To me the Pac 12 or even Fox 1 is a better sports network. I stopped following ESPN years ago, because (at least then) they very rarely had any coverage of any teams west of the Mississippi.

Anyway, I would love to save $5 or $7 on my monthly bill or more by dropping ESPN. It's all part of the transition toward ala carte programming. Why don't they let folks choose to have ESPN only if desired (same argument DTV vs the Pac)? It's insane to think that ESPN is paid more than 5x the amount of any other channel and they want significantly more.

agree....espn doesn't cover any teams in any sport west of the Mississippi worth a dam!... have been giving fox 1 a shot

ESPN is near worthless. Football is the only sport I care about and they rarely spend any time on the PAC. I would rather sit on a pineapple than watch shows about the SEC.

This is interesting. I have been involved with evaluating some of the future of media - Netflixs, Amazon, HBO, cable carriers, Pandora etc. - from the standpoint of who is going to have the power and how are things going to be delivered. One group has come back saying that advertisers are paying way too much for sporting events especially ESPN. The attraction of sports is that it is not recorded usually so people do not skip the commercials but the argument is that you are paying a premium for reaching a relatively small segment of the population in most cases. It is going to be interesting which group is going to control this in the future.

Not a huge fan of espn. I rarely watch ESPN. I work on Mondays nights, so Monday night footabll is impossible for me. I can always watch espn3.com to catch the buffs and some college football games. So I welcome this development. I hope they drop ESPN and reduce my bill.

No, people don't FF the commercials. They go get a beer during the commercials. Or they go and get rid of a beer during the commercials. Or get something to eat, flip channels, or get distracted pretending to talk to the wife/girlfriend/SO so that they won't interrupt during the game. The idea that they're really paying attention to the commercials just because they aren't FFing is probably way oversold to advertisers...

The percentages on "non attentive viewing" have been trending up dramatically. People are on their laptops or smartphones during commercials if they don't get up from the couch. It's pretty much killing short-form infomercials (30 second to 2 minute ads). Other advertisers are slower to wake up to this reality because they don't get the same real-time data on whether the ad they are running is directly causing a sale to be made. But advertisers will catch up despite the best efforts of the ad agencies they utilize hoping to keep this quiet (producing commercials and buying ads is a cash cow for the agencies and they like business-as-usual).

The loss of the other Disney channels will be a bigger issue in my family than the loss of ESPN. The kids will be bummed other than that, who cares.

Looks like I can still get a Dish appointment for Saturday morning.

I give Uverse till 8 PM tonight and then I will be forced to pull the plug.

Which means that they will come to an agreement soon after I cancel them.
