Early returns are looking good. 27 points vs CSU when 14 were ST's and 24 vs CAU with 4 TO's and a KO return inside the 10. Also 3 defensive TD's. We'll know more this week vs Fresno, but it's certainly nice having a DC with 20+ years of high-end bcs DC experience. Baer>>>>>Brown

Early returns have been great so far on defense. When was the last time we really had a defense that didn't give up that many points if special teams were taken care of and a defense that could make opposing teams pay when they turn the ball over against the Buffs? It seems like forever.

Pac-12 offenses are ridiculously good this year. For the rest of this season, any week our defense can hold the opponent under 30 points has to be considered an excellent defensive effort. Of the remaining 10 games, it looks like USC has the worst offense of the teams CU will face.

watching the UCA game, you saw how our D started making adjustments after the first quarter. It was awesome. Their screen game, for instance. It killed us early, but by the fourth quarter we were all over it. On the Bell pick six, not one but two DL held up and went looking for the screen, while chidera jumped up and forced a bullet throw to the WR, who couldn't see it until late and as a result tipped it up for the pick six. Also, if he had caught it, Gillam was going to earn the sledgehammer award. It was wonderful to watch. Remember the unstoppable RG3 baylor screen pass?

Just to ponder the impossible.... Cause it probably won't happen.... But often when everybody is looking for the shootout of of epic proportion as I am against Fresno.... The strange defensive, turnover ladden, key penalty, shot in the foot game appears..... Perhaps our defense under Baer will rise up and steal some thunder Saturday?

Pass rush will tell the tale on that! But just maybe....

Really proud of the defensive progress from last year in any event!

It's easy to tell that the defense is playing a lot faster this year. The strategies have appeared to be simple and conservative which allows the players to read and react much faster. To this point, we haven't been gashed for endless huge plays like last year. It can not be stated enough that Baer and the defensive staff have done a great job of teaching fundamentals to our players. I'm seeing much better tackling and flow to the ball.

Like Nik said, if we can keep offenses under 30, I'll be happy. Especially if we can keep coming up with big plays and TO's.

I wouldn't look that far down the road just yet. I'm looking more at Frenso State and Oregon State. USC could turn their season around by that time. We'll know how CU could handle Oregon State's offense after the Frenso State game. Hawaii picked off OSU's QB and took it back for a TD. I think we would have a much better idea of how CU's season could go after the game in Corvallis.

Tackling and stripping/ball handling is where I see the most improvement on Defense. Also that interception by Crawley was 100% on Coach Mac. Reminded him before the play of how the fade would look from UCA and he was able to react with 100% confidence.

I'll be more willing to comment on his ability after this week given the debacle last year against Fresno. I think the secondary has definitely improved, most likely because of a year of experience, but also gaining a more individual attention from coaches. On that note, does anyone know if one of the GAs is working specifically with the lbs? I have to assume Nate Taye or JB Hall is. I can't really find any info on them. I think we know that Mike Pitre is pretty much in charge of the tailbacks.

Also Baer>>>>Ron Collins. Collins is now the LB coach at Ohio.

 From what I heard, Collins was not very well liked or respected by the players. I'd take Greg Brown over Collins anyday. Brown was put in a bad situation and didn't know how to adjust, but overall a good position coach.

I see improvement everywhere. We are fast, swarm to the ball, hit hard, tackle well, try to strip, play positions with discipline and play with SWAGGER! They are just fun to watch too!!

Besides Brown being unqualified, he was only a part time DB coach. We now have 2 FT DB coaches and it is paying off. Improve the pass rush and coverage on the deep ball and we will be AWESOME!!!!

I am with Slider on this. We may still give up some crazy points in some games, but it is impossible to deny that our D is playing WAAAAAAAY better than under Embree & Co. Look no further than the fact that we tied our INT total from last season in just one game. Our D is getting points too. And they are making a lot of key stops and coming to occasion. Giving up very few big plays. In fact I don't think our opponents have had an offensive TD longer than 20+ yds or so (I could be forgetting one).

I actually feel like many of us, myself included, need to start preparing the grill for the crow eating b/c Baer was one of the guys many of us were unsure about. I agree it is too early to make a final judgement but early in the season he has our D playing way better than last year.

I wouldn't be surprised if we blitzed alot this weekend. We are gonna have to force some turnovers to win. Attack their ass, make them do what they don't wanna do.

Also something we haven't seen too much of from the D. They were again able to keep the schemes pretty straightforward and just play assignment based disciplined football. Can't wait to see how they perform when they start throwing some stunts and delayed blitzes in there. Maybe this is the game.

Are we still talking about football there at the end?

Exactly, they really haven't seen it on tape so far. Dialing up a timely blitz might cause a few mistakes. Drop Gilbert, he's a smaller D end, he might throw it right to us. Blitzing guys keep their hands up, back side guy wait on that slant if we tip our hand a bit. Other words **** with them, especially if we have a few matchup problems.

Yes, last game had few blitzes, less than CSU which wasn't a lot either. Based on what coach has said all along, I really think they are going to try to put pressure on a guy like carr, now that we are a couple games in too. I'm sure they'll mix it up a lot, but no doubt we'll see more pressure schemes this week.

Nice bandwagon jumping!

You did watch the games the past two years, right?

realistic evaluation of positive points of coaching staff = bandwagon jumping? sure thing. That's why certain morons are on ignore. We've won the 2 games I thought we would win. We still have a LOT of issues and have gotten rather lucky to escape with two wins despite our mistakes. Hope we steal a few more. Take us bowling, and I will be very happy to "bandwagon" jump

I don't expect a lot of blitzes this week either. The FSU offense is designed for the QB to catch and throw. 2 seconds is not enough time to bring pressure. It's going to be a bunch of short quick passes where they try to isolate a guy in space to beat someone one on one. The kind of crap that we had no strategy for last year.

This year, you see the DB's working it together. A little bend don't break. Force him to the sideline with a proper angle or force him inside where there is help if you must. The Sideline is our friend and FINALLY we seem to understand this. Expect Fresno to put up huge yardage, while moving it into the redzone. Then we will see what happens there.

I wouldn't call you a bandwagon jumper. More of a ballrider.

Fair enough. To get the ball out quick, what kind of routes u think they are gonna run? U don't defend finesse, u attack it.
