You little redneck. You saved us, and Mr Bohn, from ourselves. We were fairly desperate to give you in the neighborhood of $3M, but you graciously took Tennessee's money instead.

Not many of us were excited by that potential hire. But on the other hand, you can't really evaluate his potential at TN based on this loss against Oregon. Apparently he's stepping his recruiting.

He's recruiting quite well given Tennessee's relative disadvantage of being forced to go poaching in FL, GA and VA due to the relative lack of talent Tennessee HS football produces compared to most of their neighbors. That Vol expectation of winning SEC titles will catch up with him, probably sooner than later.

I remember posting that I was a little concerned that all he had done was follow Brian Kelley around and people flipped out on me.

"We've had 7 consecutive losing seasons, if we can get this guy we're doing great!"

"Dude, who do you want, Nick Saban? This guy is a great coach"

"After the minor hiccup of the first year post BK, Jones got them back on track. That's basically as good as the San Jose State coach you keep plugging"

These quotes are 100% accurate and links can be provided.

In defense of this, a lot of people were in the "anything can be a serious upgrade" mindset at the time. I'm equally psyched we landed HCMM instead of Dykes. I don't think Dykes is going to prove to be some huge failure or anything like that, but I would just prefer our program not perennially be dead last nationally in defense.

Butch Jones is a bad coach now because he got rolled at Oregon? Whatever.

I'm very happy we have MacIntyre, but Jones can coach.

Jones can coach. It's just essentially a complete unknown whether he can rebuild. Glad we've got some tangible past evidence of major rebuilding with our guy. Certainly getting steamrolled at Oregon in year 1 is not a sure sign of failure for Butch at Tennessee by any means.

Was never a fan of Butch Jones. Even before he turned CU down. The real problem is how did Mike Bohn consider Butch Jones to be a better candidate than Mike McIntyre?

You know that Shane Dillon was a big Coach Jones fan, right?

Right.

Mike probably had some fear in the back of his mind of hiring another WAC guy. In fact, I distinctly remember a segment of our own fans voicing this concern over both HCMM and Dykes "I don't want to go down that road again" yada yada yada (as if every WAC coach is Hawk). Butch would have given Bohn the whole "I went out and hired a guy coming off two straight top 25 finishes at a BCS conference program" soundbite.

I've been happy with Mac over Jones since Day 1, mostly since Jones seems like a complete slime ball and Mac appears to be the complete opposite. Way too early to start proclaiming how thrilled we are we didn't get Jones, though.

I know one thing, Oregon has about as much speed as I've seen a team have. They would give Bama some problems in space. Only question for me would be can they hold their own up front on both sides?

If healthy, yes, the Ducks can hold their own. Last year when 'Furd beat 'em, they were down a number of injured players on both sides of the line and 'Furd is as close to an SEC-style team as there is in the PAC. Still, the Trees just barely won that one. When they lost the MNC to Auburn, it was by a FG. They more than held their own.

:yeahthat: Food Cart seems like a slimy attention whore.

Probably, I just remember feeling like I was in a pretty small minority that just wasn't super enthused about the possibility of BJ as our coach. People were acting like he was the absolute gem of the year as far as coaches go. Meh.

Also, people realize that Oregon is going to do the same thing to us, right? We're going to lose that game by a lot and it won't mean Mac sucks.

I remember I was working very hard to feel optimistic/excited about the hire. I didn't have to try nearly as hard for Mac2. He was always in my top 4. But you were a little more honest about your feelings, as I remember.

It'd probably be pretty interesting to read back through some of those threads. I bet I was all over the place with who I liked  I just remember looking a little harder at Mac and really liking what I saw. I think once people did that they also liked what they saw. On the surface, he had some warts; overall losing record, 1-11 first year, only one good year, etc. but once you figured out he inherited a team that was literally about to drop football and had scholarship reductions, no talent, etc, you knew he did a hell of a job getting them to 11 wins in only 3 years.

Strong, Anderson, Mullen, MM2 was a pretty consistent order for me. But again, I convinced myself to be excited about Jones for a bit. The year before (or was it two?) I was excited by Mahlzan, but now I'm not even sure I remember how to spell his name.

At the end of the day, I'm very happy with what I got. I'm awed by MM2's ability to shift culture. It's a rare gift. I'm not predicting any more wins this season, necessarily, but I've already seen what I want to see.

Anderson was my first wish. Mac was second. Just never thought the redneck was a good choice. I don't think anyone beats Oregon, but watching him throw a fit on the sideline yesterday reminded me of Pelini.

I thought there were a number of solid candidates. Orr's list was probably my favorites, but I was fairly high on DeRuyter as well. If he had been at Fresno for 2-3 years and done that well every year, he probably would've been my favorite.

Either way, I don't really hate Jones. He screwed us over, but lets be honest, the Tennessee job is a pretty damn good job. Not many schools will have their support, facilities, money, etc. I just wonder if he can handle the massive expectations that come with that job. Rebuilding in SEC terms is 1 year.

Didn't Benson say, at the time, that one criteria was that he wanted someone with BCS head coaching experience? That went out the window when Jones reversed direction.

Not a Jones fan at all, but he's recruiting VERY well at Tennessee right now. 1 5*, 11 4* and 7 high 3*

So by my count, they have 19 players before we get to our highest rated recruit right now. They do have the SEC advantage as well as location, $$$ and history, but it's there's one thing we need to work on is our recruiting. Hopefully the guys we are getting will help rebuild the program, but Tennessee will have talent. Unfortunately for them, so does everyone else in the SEC.
