IMHO sure looks like Mike Mac is wanting to red shirt the future QB. Today would have been the perfect time to see him play an entire
quarter and get his feet wet. Not seeing him play speaks volumes.

Ya what is going on here

Look at Darth's thread on the correlation between youth and us sucking, there is your answer.

Sefo is not better than Connor right now, so unless Connor is hurt why burn the shirt?

Well MacIntyre himself said there was no possibility of him redshirting... so might as well play him in garbage time right?

I think he wants to give Connor as much game experience as possible. It's not like he's a seasoned vet at this point.

Also for a guy who is coming straight out of HS into the college game playing against a team as fast as Oregon, even Oregons back-ups may not be what you would call a confidence building experience.

I also think that M2 may be playing a little bit of a mentality with the players that "I won't quit on you, you don't quit on me, we keep playing for the win no matter what the score is and how much time is left." No such thing as garbage time when your last two seasons have been garbage time.

Exactly. I thought about it during the game. Throwing him in against Oregon would've been very tough. At this point, I think Mac would prefer to RS him. Probably depends on Wood's health. But never say never.

Question for those closer to the players.

At the start of the season M2 was obviously not impressed with his options beyond Wood and Sefo. Has Grenke or someone else moved forward enough that they could be our short term back-up saving Sefo's shirt if needed for a few plays.

Would you rather see Sefo destroyed now then have him playing as a 5th year senior? Maybe if you're 85 and likely to kick the bucket before 2017.

Nick Kasa looks great in that Raider uniform. So did Tyler Hansen in that Bengals preseason outfit last year. But hey, gotta "get his feet wet."

Bastard!

Today was not the time to put a guy who the coaches (by their actions thus far, not their words) deem not quite ready yet. Throwing him into the fire against Oregon is not the right way to go about things, IMO.

If he doesn't feature against Arizona State or Charleston Southern (at which point the season will be half gone) then he should keep the redshirt if all we're dealing with is Wood's helmet popping off and needing to send someone in to do a handoff or two. Gehrke can do that. Barring something unforeseen like the Buffs making a serious push for 6-6 and Wood going down longer term, I don't want to see Sefo burn the shirt late in the season. It's not going to be worth sacrificing a mature veteran Sefo down the road so some allbuffers can get a quick hard-on watching him hand the ball off a few times and maybe throw a screen.

I agree he needs to red shirt. I pointing out that if we haven't seen him now I doubt we will unless there are injuries.

Only two? 2001 was the last season that didn't feel like garbage time. Yes, won some B12N titles, but only because the B12N sucked azz more then than I had ever seen.

I would love it if they could redshirt every incoming freshman every year. Really good teams do that.

Agree with you that we have sucked for a long time. My garbage time comment referred to playing when the game was already over. At leas some games under Hawkins we were playing with the illusion that we might win for part of the game. After we came out and played like amatuer hour against Hawaii we knew or should have known that virtually every game we had scheduled was lost before the opening kick-off.

I understand and agree with M2 that this is a building process. I don't want the message sent that we are not going to do everything possible to be our best in every game. At the same time to cost Sefo a season just to play a few snaps that will make no difference in our final outcome makes no sense at all.

Unless Gerke or Dohrman are an absolute embarassment they should be the ones coming in in the event of Wood losing a helmet or even needing to finish off the end of a game that has already been determined.

Actually really good teams play a handful of freshmen every year. It's how they reload, they are never really young across the board.

I am fine with Sefo redshirting, but not because I give a **** about him potentially starting as a 5th year senior in 2017. I doubt MacIntyre is thinking that either.

In reference to the garbage time, I heard last night that of the 18 games Marcus Mariota has played (started) he has only finished four of them. FOUR! That is just absurd! The fact that they are so comfortably in the lead that he has only seen 0:00 on the field four times shows how far along they are as a team.

This also means that the 2nd teamers are getting quite a bit of playing time. That's why Oregon doesn't seem to miss a beat every year, their starters (former backups) have had just as much game experience as a returning starter.

the best thing Neuweasel ever did for UCLA was red shirting Hunley. Stefo needs to red shirt. Take the lumps now.

Given the fact that we've been taking lumps for a number of years now, one more lump won't hurt us.

The fact that we're already a third of the way thru the season makes the case for redshirting him even stronger.

I loved his calm demeanor at first, then he almost seemed so calm he seemed slow, now I believe he is just thinking everything through more thoroughly than we are used to seeing in rookie QBs. He is incredibly intentional, and every week that goes by I expect the thinking to become routine and the instincts to take over. That's when he'll start running around more and becoming lightening fast with decision making.

These are just impressions and I haven't rewatched any games, but you have to lover that he rarely makes huge mistakes this early even against some solid competition.

So, you don't think we should redshirt him?

I just hope that some of these decisions results in him pulling the ball away from the RB on the zone read just 2-3 times a game so we aren't doing just a glorified deep handoff all the time.

But as he catches up to the game he'll hopefully start to see this. That said, his decisions in the pass game are a breath of fresh air.

On the zone read play that Pow got lit up, he had no choice but to pull it. That d-end paid Sefo no mind, he definitely crashed down there. He made some really good throws, the one to DD early on was a very nice ball. I like his attitude as well. He didn't take **** from one of the best defensive players in the country, that was cool to see. Pretty sure Barr is the one that about broke Barkley in half last year. I don't think he's ever gonna be a great runner but I think he's gonna be a good qb at CU.

How good would he be if he started at the beginning of the season? 3 extra games would have been huge, not to mention all the extra practices with the ones.

Idk, it is a pretty big assumption he would have been ready by Labor Day....

I'm fine with how it played out. Can't be sure we would have beaten CSU with a freshman playing that early or that if it would have been an issue to team chemistry if Wood (a 4th year player and captain) hadn't at least been given a shot.
