jgisland blog: Statistical Preview of the 2013-14 Season

Thanks for the preview, JG.
I apologize in advance if this amounts to concern trolling but I'm curious about how the effort to get Jelly more touches impacts our pace. The Mayor spoke to that being a focus over the summer but unless we see XJ, Jenkins or one of the frosh immediately establish their ability to hit the three and extend the D, I worry that we'll still bog down in the half court at least early in the season. It seems like one of the concerns from the core group of hoops posters was how bad our half court sets were. Is this one of the growing pains we expect to see as Tad figures out this roster?

You're right Snow, I shouldn't have had XJ in there. But I'll rephrase: do we need to shoot better than 34 percent from 3 as a team if we don't want to get bogged down in half court?

It's a good question and a valid point, nobody is a bigger proponent of what a shooter can do to a half court offense than me. But there are several factors at play, I don't think overall team 3 pt % is as much of a concern than having 1 single shooter than can stretch the floor. If you compare the last 3 Tad teams they are all somewhat similar:

201120122013
% of 3's made39%
35%
34%
% of shots taken that are 3's
28%
31%
29%

None of Tad's teams have taken a lot of 3's and the % made is also similar. But what a single shooter can do is create SPACING. That's exactly what Levi did in 2011, the last two years you didn't have to watch much CU basketball to realize the spacing was terrible.

All that being said, CU doesn't look to have a Levi. From the sounds of it Jenkins and Talton have been shooting the ball well, so maybe they can step in. But how do create spacing and not get bogged down in the half-court without a knock down shooter? BALL-MOVEMENT, CU didn't have this last year, CU did a lot of standing around with and without the ball. More skilled athletes should help the half-court offense and spacing, but Tad runs a more "pro-style" isolation/pick and roll game. Spacing is key to this, so hopefully we'll see more swinging of the ball, attacking of the rim with increased offensive talent on this year's roster.

I think we shoot much better from 3pt range. I don't see Ski shooting 30% again or Dinwiddie shooting 34% from deep either.

We probably don't have any Levis on this team, but how many CBB teams have one anyway? Not many guys shoot 45-50% from deep in college. He was absolutely deadly his senior year.

We definitely have more shooters and guys that can really score the ball. I really hope Boyle can up the tempo finally with all these players and play more pressing defense and run run run. Boyle never had that luxury in any season prior, so this year is very exciting to me.

We will be able to destroy sea level teams with our depth and our pressure in theory (which I hope becomes a reality). We are due to beat KU!!!

I don't mind a half court game, but our half court offense hasn't been any good. Our assists/game numbers are terrible. I rather play a up and down game and make other teams wear down by the 2nd half than a slow half court matchup.

Based of the Tad interview we saw yesterday it sounds like getting back to the pace of year 1 with Burks and Higgins is a priority.

I love that we're in a position where other teams have to game plan to keep CU from running. Makes the Buffs damn hard to beat if opposing coaches decide the best way to beat us is if they try to match their half court defense against Tad's. Our half court defense has carried us to 2 straight NCAA tournament appearances & a Pac-12 title despite a lack of offensive firepower.

Good luck with that approach, opposing coaches.

It'll also be interesting on how teams send players to the offensive glass vs getting back on D against CU this year. CSU crashed the boards against CU (and every other team last year) and got burned for it. Where teams like UCLA, Utah, Arizona State, Cal, and Oregon State all gave up offensive rebound opportunities to get back on D.
