Bobby Hauck (ex CU coach) leading UNLV out of the ashes in year 4

Just noticed that Fresno State plays UNLV today. Fresno State in the top 20. Former CU coach Bobby Hauck has the UNLV Rebels at 4-2 with wins over Central Michigan, Illinois, New Mexico and Hawaii.

Bobby Hauck was very successful at Montana (7 straight conf titles, 3 national title appearances) and I thought that was a good hire. He was on my radar to replace Hawkins when we hired Embree.

His first few years were not good and I believe he was on the hot seat early this season, his fourth, with 3 straight 2 win seasons under his belt. I tend to believe that this guy knows his football and he had to completely and totally build it.

This is a good example of what a "foundational build" looks like. When I look at quick turnarounds, they are almost always led by an offensive system that is tough to stop (the zone read for example made careers for guys like Urban Meyer, Sumlin, Briles....). And that's a great way to go as well. Certainly quicker and damn exciting as well.

If I'm the AD and looking for a coach, it would be tempting to look for a quick turnaround by hiring an Offensive Genius for sure. But if you can be patient, a guy like Hauck, or Craig Bohl at NDSU are going to fix the program in a pretty sustainable way.

My hopes are that starting today, we see a lot more flash on offense here in Boulder. While I think HCMM is one of those solid foundational guys, we could use some flashes to create some excitement and hope. 3 straight 2 win seasons would be devastating.

Good find.

A couple of things here. One is that Hauck is a very good coach. As bad as things are in Boulder what he took over in Vegas may have been more difficult. UNLV is a school where few care about a football team that plays in a conference that few pay attention to. Basketball is and always will be king there.

Secondly, You make a great point in comparing turnarounds based on system or foundation. They system ones happen much faster but also tend to fall apart much faster. I'd rather we give M2 the time it takes to establish a solid foundation that isn't dependant of individual players or some gimmick that can be shut down by a defensive adjustment or vaporize as soon as the coach is gone.

They were pretty awful the last couple years, I was convinced he was going to get fired

Congratulations Bobby. Hopefully he keeps it going. I don't think he ever played a snap at the college level either.

So was someone who recently edited his Wikipedia page.

Bobby Hauck (born June 14, 1964) is a college football coach, for the time being the head coach of the UNLV Rebels.[2]

Bobby was a terrible special teams coach at CU. Color me unconvinced. If he would have been hired as HC at CU, I would have had to cut all ties to the University.

I think he's a decent coach but would have been a terrible fit for CU.

Of UNLV's wins on that list, only Illinois gives me any evidence he may be turning things around. Those other 3 don't tell me much. He's got 2 more to go to get bowl eligible but of the remaining schedule the best shots are really the last two games of the season, at Air Force and then SDSU. If they get to a bowl I'll be more inclined to think he's got them going in a good direction.
