Bowling in 2015 or Bust

I know lots of people are fed up and depressed and frustrated or angry at the state of affairs with our team. All understood. But noone thought HCMM would turn this around in 1 season and if you did you were not seeing things clearly.

I swear I see a better team out there this year than our recent years. We won the games we were supposed to win which we weren't doing before, and we are generally not so embarrassing to watch. I think we have some young talent at key positions that is something to build on (including Sefo, Adkins, Awuzie and Gillam). Those are skill positions that can make a difference. I know our DL has lots of work but I see lots of potential there. OL seems worse off.

We need more skill positions including a pass catcthing threat at TE and obviously a few burners at WR especially with PRich leaving this year or next.

But while some of the decisions from this game were questionable, I think in general our staff is doing a good job with this team and completely believe they will turn this around. We obviously need an upgrade in talent which is not gong to happen over night.

I have faith, but to expect a bowl game before 2015 is probably unreasonable. However, I am eying 2015 as our breakthrough year. If we are not bowling by then, Rick George, HCMMM & Co may need to consider switching to the MWC! (only half joking about that).

Actually, you were the one with the higher expectations than most.

And those "building blocks" are decent players, nobody special outside Gillam.

I know i Was but i never predict es bowling this year.

Dependa on how you define some success. By most accounts we are much improcedente from last year so that'a progress

I expect to see year on year improvement across the board but 3 years to go from a win worst team in nation to a bowl game would be an accomplishment

We are better, but do you really see this offense taking the next step anytime soon? We have scored over 30 offensive points exactly two times all year. Haven't even come close in conference. Is that really something to build upon?

The ofende is not progressing much although generally not committing as many turnovers. We have a true fresh qb and rb on their 2nd start

Its going to tale time and we need some key reinforcements

Your prior posts indicate that you've thought things would get turned around this season. So is this a personal diary, and you're writing to yourself?

Just so you know, I appreciate your positive outlook on things Buffs football, and wish that I had that bright of an outlook on things at times. However, after a while, I gotta call bull**** when I see it.

Yes I have been more optimistic than most. I believed, and still do, that coaching makes a huge difference and that with good coaching you should win the games you are supposed to win, and look competent in the ones you shouldn't

I would say for the most part that has been true this year. I do believe that we are farther away from being competitive in the games we probably shouldn't win that I had hoped.

I also believe after watching 7 games this season that next year won't be much better, especially if PRich goes. The good thing is we will have 1 more year in the system (AZ is a good example of a team that has made a decent jump from yr 1 to 2), but I am setting expectations from the Kool-Aid camp that at this rate, a bowl next year is also improbable.

I am also saying that if HCMM is who I thinks he is, than despite the challenges he inherited, he needs to find a way to get to a bowl game by end of year 3.

None of what I am saying now is inconsistent with what I have said before-the only thing is I have tempered my optimism for year 2.

While some of you want to discount some of other fresh that are playing, I said this in another post, for the most part our true fresh are not liabilities and for the most part are playing as well as our seasoned players. And I believe that bodes well for our future.

P.S. Did anyone else see that stat they showed during the game that Colorado is amongst the lowest 5 teams in the nation for yards produced by seniors this year? 1% of the offensive production has come from seniors. I am using this not as an excuse for our poor play, but more as another reason for optimism for future years. This is why I believe by year 3, with 3 years of HCMM's recruits playing in his system, that we will be going bowling.

And if not, even with our facilities situation and everything else, it is on him if we are not.

How much offensive production has Richardson had? The senior number is pretty meaningless overall.

It might be hire west coast recruiting stud ASAP or bust. I want HCMM to hopefully have a full 5 years (and warrant that), but that has to involve talent upgrade above and beyond what the early returns are. I'm not recommending cleaning the assistant house, but there's one move that needs to be made to give ourselves a chance

This team is better than last year and I think next years team will be better than this years team, even if as likely we lose PRich.

As Boyd indentifies we do have a number of good young players, more than I can identify in any recent year. True, as Duff states we don't have any superstar candidates in that group other than Gillam but some could be very good players, guys to continue building around.

All that in mind we play in a conference where teams score points. No matter how good Sefo and our potential WRs and RBs might turn out to be we aren't going to score points until the issue with the OL is solved. Right now we can't block for the run or the pass. RBs don't have holes and recievers don't have time to complete routes. Even PRich has had a marked drop off in production in the PAC schedule and it isn't because the DBs can suddenly cover him. It is in large part due to the fact that by the time he gets a chance to get open the QB is already under heavy pressure. Our worst linemen are the interior upperclassmen who should be our best. We can hope that some of the young guys who are redshirting this year will turn out to be better but we have no solid evidence to base that hope on.

Until we have an offensive line that can allow our offense to control the ball, influence field positon, and score on a regular basis the also weak defense is going to be put in positions where they have no chance to succeed.

I do think that M2 was the best hire we could make at the time and that if anyone can turn this ship around he is the guy. I also am certain that it isn't going to happen quick.

@Boyd

I can appreciate your optimism and attempt to cheer on the fan base with your opinions and observations.

But I have one big critism that is an obstacle to taking your promotional dialog seriously.

At no point do you discuss accountability nor responsibility for why CU's football program has been under-performing for a prolonged period.

We can agree that first year coach MacIntyre is playing the hand that has been dealt. We can agree he needs more time to recruit and build a program.

But you tend to ignore the legimate frustration that exists by fans who are fed up with years and years of futility. CU didn't have to plummet to such depths.

And the people who let this happen on their watch are still earning big salaries and are still in charge.

Every year, and every new coach, our expectations get pushed out. I love it. I remember when everyone was talking about 2013 being the year.

This team goes nowhere until the recruiting gets better

I want to win some games next year against actual quality opponents. We are a freaking disaster. We need some sort of miracle entrance of juco talent or something.

You are correct that I almost never allude to the failures of the past or the lack of commitment for facilities, etc. and for the football program in general. This is for a few reasons:
1.) Tons of you have filled up forums with that stuff and in general many of the forums have a negative tone to them
2.) The past is nothing we can do anything about and I have found in my own life it doesn't do much good to complain about the past
3.) I feel like someone has to take the responsibility on AB to be the glass half-full guy-I know I have company in people like Tini as well on this
4.) I believe that most of those are excuses, mostly valid but still excuses, and in my opinion, successful leaders like RG and HCMM have to find a way to get stuff done with the resources they have (and many coaches in other programs) even in recent history have proven they can get wins despite less than stellar commitment or financial resources
5.) The AD's recent commitment of more significant $ to pay higher quality staff for the AD and football coaching staff are indicative we may be on the right path from the administrative side as well

FYI, for those of you who think I only have rose-colored glasses you can go back and look at my calls for firing Embree including several communications directly with Bohn about that.

2.) The past is nothing we can do anything about and I have found in my own life it doesn't do much good to complain about the past

The present is that CU is in a hole. The present is that PD and BB are not football fanatics. They are buying your optimism. This attempt could very well be too little, too late.

Accountability is not a "past" thing. It's a now thing.

Before the season I was really thinking about 2014 as the year we go bowling. That looks very unlikely right now

Did you expect a post from him, or a thesis? ****. You could write BOOKS on everything that has led us up to this point. Two more years of Mac getting his kids in and up to speed and I think a bowl game will absolutely happen. I really hoped for one this year but the OL is just atrocious. Between Hawk and Embree, we are really behind the power curve. We are more of a flatline.

I am curious as to who people think should be let go on the staff to go get a huge talent recruiter. And...can that be done the minute after the Utah game so we can get the benefit this recruiting cycle?

That is exactly where I am. I was (too) optimistic that HCMM could turn it around in 1 year and have us bowling next year, but now it looks less likely. Especially if PRich goes to the NFL since we have noone else proven to stretch the D.

This team is improving right in front of our eyes, it's just not showing up in the win column, yet. The rest of the conference is taking notice, but we need some of our conference brethren to come back to Earth a little, too. It's hard to scratch out wins when every other team in the conference, save Cal, has gotten better. We're going in the right direction, just not quickly enough for most. Just try and imagine what a trainwreck this place would be if Embree were still coach; we'd have 0 or 1 wins, recruiting worse, with no hope.
