It's Henderson, but here's a great quote by Chad Brown from the article. Confims suspicions.

"From a sideline perspective, the other (teams) are bigger, thicker," Brown said. "The backs, whether it's Ka'Deem Carey or Bishop Sankey, are just so athletic and the difference in size, speed and athletic ability is readily apparent at the field level."

I hope the staff knows how to recruit the kind of guys to match up athletically in this league.

brown was on the radio during the last game saying the same thing. not enough athletes. can't win any of the key matchups. he had great things to say about gillam, however.

That's good. Gives me hope that this staff can recruit the type of athletes we need.

we can't rely on the diamond in the rough model for finding p12 talent, but yes, i was also encouraged by his thoughts about gillam. brown was a damned good frosh too.

we really need more athletes.

I don't think we have much choice in terms if diamonds.

If we can get some juco guys in now that will give us size and experience to improve our foundation that's what I'd do next.

If we have to take diamonds at least take the ones with speed and give them some time to develop.

Look for transfers.

Fall back on your relationship with west coast HS coaches. Build relationships with CO HS coaches (and surrounding).

I guess I don't see a diamond in the rough...meaning only one FBS level kid. Adkins, Awuzie and Gillam are all good and will be for years to come. A few years in their system may produce lots of solid players. But I get your point and time will definitely tell.

This is what I see as well. Already we have freshmen playing (and playing at a high level) - guys that MacIntyre brought in himself. Beyond these guys mentioned, I think we need to be excited about Jimmie Gilbert, Tedric Thompson, and Sefo.

We need at least 1 win down the stretch to give us some hope going into 2014. 2 would be great, winning the last 3 would be just piss-my-pants amazing. That - combined with a hopeful facilities announcement would give the Buffs something to build on!

Should help recruiting...too bad we've got a lot of slots filled this year. Maybe it will help close a few players we want but are wavering.

I think HCMM can be counted on to snag a couple "diamonds in the rough" every year, but that won't be enough for a winning record in the Pac-12. That was enough for a winning record at SJSU, which is what concerns me going forward. HCMM is going to have to learn some new tricks, and quick. We need a dozen guys as athletic as PRich on the roster, not one.

Rankings and stars are useful general tools. Not an exact science, but decent general indicators. Rule of thumb with plenty of exceptions, but....

Four of the top five teams from 2012 Rivals rankings based on average star: Florida State, Bama, Stanford & Ohio State. That list looks a lot like the current AP rankings.

Granted, this is only one year, but in 2012 the following teams had average star ratings for the 2012 class of below 3.0: CU, Oklahoma State, WVU, Arizona State, Arizona, Oregon State & BYU. Most of those teams on that list are pretty solid, all things considered, save one.

Gotta look at offers. Compare average number of major conf offers and you'll see a different result , I suspect.

Also what kind of 3*'s are they taking? 5.5rr (low 3*), 5.6rr (mid 3*), or 5.7rr (high 3*)

How many stars was Connor Wood when he committed to Texas?

How many was Sefo and would he be considered a diamond in the rough? That MM got?

Go ahead and read that qualifying statement in my post....about stars being a general guideline and not an exact science....about star ranking system being a rule of thumb with plenty of exceptions. Do you not get that?

I'm sure you can point to some life-long smokers that live to be 98, but does that mean smoking is not bad for you? Geez! Some people!!!!

And please feel free to show me the many teams that have won national championships in the last ten years without lots of guys playing that got four and five star ratings?

We have to go with Jucos. Just have to. Find a way to get them into school and into the program.

Another way to look at the 'diamond in the rough' model is to try and be more specific when it comes to offering athletes. If a kid wants to play RB, and everyone else is telling him safety, let him come in and get a look at RB. Same with WRs, TEs, etc. It gets sketchy when it comes to QBs, but there are probably guys playing S at other BCS schools who are better than most of our WRs and RBs. Same with DEs and LBs and our TEs.

Give kids a little more leeway. If nothing else, it can upgrade speed.

And Jameis Winston was a 5*. QB is hard to predict. That doesn't mean I wouldn't love to have CU take in a blue chip QB this year to take over from Sefo.

The jury is still out on Sefo. He's done well as true frosh and shows good leadership, but losing takes a toll, and there are things in his game that need to be improved to call him a diamond in the rough. He may become great or he may be average or he may get benched in the future. That'll depend on coaching (qb coaching, OL play, playcalling) and his ambition to get better along with the staff recruiting better. The last QB that I can remember that took a piss poor team and made them a conference contender was Matt Ryan at BC.

JUCO route buys us some time to start getting good HS recruits. I'm not sure why any top HS recruit would look at CU with how bad we are and while it sounds nice to get some under the radar players, redshirt them and build them up I'm not sure with the way we are getting beat that HCMM is going to be able to last that long. That's a 3-4 year process at best. We are getting beaten by 30 points+ in conference. Need talent infusion NOW.

QB is the absolute hardest position to predict and rate coming out of high school. No other position even comes close.

Take the last 200 5-star guys who signed as one group. Take the last 200 2-star guys as another group. Which group do you think had more guys playing at a high level in their junior and senior years in college? I'll bet it's not even close.

It's not an exact science by any means, but to completely dismiss the star rating system is just ignorant.
