Direct TV wins

Direct TV has the power thanks to S Ticket. There is not a bar in or within 30 miles of our neighboring town of 50k that has Dish. They didn't even come close to offering a comp when I called in. Larry, you lost. I would find a new proposal to offer the giant, quit pretending you have a product that carries leverage and get the PAC 12 on the ****ing direct TV menu. Tap out and be done with it. You lost.

Disagree. Even if you claim DirectTV won the current battle, they lose Sunday ticket after this season. Will be in terrible position.

Here's the problem.

DTV is an upside for PACN revenue. But if Larry caved to the demands of DTV, it would cause a domino effect with PACN's other deals. The rates paid by the other carriers will automatically go down if PACN cuts a discounted deal with someone else.

Really in the end, we lose (p12 fans) We've been forced to either switch carriers or not see any games. In the past, I was able to watch at least 10 CU games a year, via DTV here on the east coast. That number is now 2 this year, CSU and UCLA. My only option locally is 30 miles to downtown DC. Sucks!

It isn't that clear cut but effectively correct. The issue is really bundling and carriage I think. Dtv I believe wants to offer the p12 as an ala carte add on. If the p12 agrees, then other operators will be able to trigger mfns to do the same.

I think direct tv maintains control of nfl, he has to give a better deal, and the other deals crumble as well. He over played his hand. Regardless, as of this year, and tonight, I have been and continue to be ****ed. Initially I was pissed at Direct. I've changed my mind.

PAC-12 network could win if they'd change the game and feed directly to Apple TV, Roku, and Google tv.

DTV is going to compete with Google and Microsoft? DirectTV could utilize every asset they own and still not have the resources.

Scott claimed they were going to promote the Pac-12 as a national network yet a good portion of the country doesn't get your network. Here's some advice: If you want to promote your network nationally, then get eyeballs on the screen and stop playing prominent games at 10:30 EST. And now your crown jewel in Oregon is soft and falling apart in front of our faces, which even further decreases the value of your network to DTV.

The genius might want to give DTV a call.

I've also got Directv, and Sunday Ticket is the chain that keeps me tied to them. But does that mean I want Larry Scott to make deals based on whatever he can get from the carrier willing to pay the lowest price, then let everybody else have that deal? Nope. I want Directv to follow through on the commitment they made to be the source for the most sports anywhere. They're clearly changing their mind on that, which is why I think there is no way they keep paying the premium for the Sunday Ticket exclusive. And when that happens, I'm probably gone. Their calculation is that there aren't enough of us making that change to make it worth them paying for every sports package that comes along...

If I could get PAC-12, Altitude, FSN and ESPN through Apple TV or another streaming box, I'd drop cable in a heartbeat. I'd have no problem waiting an extra year to watch my favorite shows via Netflix discs or streaming.

DirecTV is losing customers just like the rest of the mainstream cable/satelite carriers. I think I'd wait for a clearer picture of where we're headed to develop before giving away the product.

False

It appears that some TV fans disgruntled by Time Warner Cable’s (TWC) staring contest with CBS (CBS) defected to DirecTV (DTV). Bucking the cord-cutting trend, the satellite video giant reported strong gains in all of the important categories this morning: sales, subscribers, and prices.
Some 139,000 additional households signed up for DirecTV on a net basis. Many of those new customers were probably among the 3 million or so Time Warner subscribers who couldn’t watch CBS in August; TWC lost 306,0000 video subscribers in the recent quarter. They didn’t all run into the arms of DirectTV, but it’s not unreasonable to think that some of them did.
DirecTV also got its customers to pay more. The average subscriber forked out $102.37 per month in the recent quarter, a 6.2 percent increase over the year-earlier period and the first time the service cycled into triple-digits. The numbers reflect a February price increase that amounted to 4.5 percent on the average account.

Rumor is DirecTV has been offering 30% of the carriage fee PAC is currently getting. Which means they are offering 30% of what they have been paying for the B1G Network. Agree to that deal or anything close to that deal and the PAC makes less money with DirecTV than without. Favored nation clauses kick in for the MSO's that got a deal done at launch.

The bottom line is DirecTV is telling the PAC your fans don't give a **** and won't switch providers. There is no incentive to carry your network. The real dagger will be when they are the first to carry the SEC Network at a higher carriage cost to them.

Scott and the PAC Networks can not give in here. Not at the offer.

This. I can't understand why the complainers can't figure this out. Cave in to one entity and you devalue the entire brand. Negotiation 101. DTV is about to lose the Sunday ticket and they will be the one trying to add sports content in another year. Meet their demands now and the PAC loses millions in the future. Again, Negotiation 101.

Dish has a $19.99 per month package. Add the sports package for another $8 and you can watch the Buffs year round for under $30. This seems like a reasonable alternative to those stuck in a long term contract.

The bolded part is correct. In general I agree with the P12 side of the DTV/P12 argument, but this is one area where the P12 is ****ing themselves...

I'm confused by all of this. I just picked the provider that offered Pac-12 Network. Maybe I don't watch that much tv. Is DTV really such an amazing product that we're going to bitch about not getting CU games instead of just switching? It's effing television.

Apparently, being able to watch out-of-market NFL games is what drives the decision for a lot of people.

I don't really understand this for home. I do get that NFL Sunday Ticket is a big deal for sports bars, so without it PACN isn't on most places where you don't have the option of getting it at home. Well, other than Dish. Not sure why more people aren't just getting that.
