Washington Hires Chris Petersen

I'm not overly worried at this point. We just have to take care of our own business. Speaking of which, that toilet flushing sound is any remaining relevance for Boise State being flushed down the crapper.

If successful, he'll be the first Boise coach to do so. One thing he has working in his favor is the abundance of talent on the roster. UDub isn't a reclamation project.

One source reporting it appears....
Boise State's offense scared the big boys a few years ago. Not so much anymore. Boise State has started to come back to earth. I imagine Peterson is still a very good coach, but he's not scaring people like he once did. 8-4 for them is a big slip backwards. Got clobbered by UW, beat soundly by BYU and lost close games at Fresno State and SDSU.

That's about 30 points per game difference from a few years ago.

Of course, there's a possibility that it was just a down year due to talent, but great coaches don't seem to go thru that.

Peterson is much greater than Nussmeier IMO who's pro-style offense was a dud at UW.

ASU closed the door too quickly with Koetter. There is no doubt he built the Boise State program. He improved Arizona State from a one win season to 9 wins, but followed that up with two 7 win seasons. At the time he was fired, he had a squad that was not going to lose anything and would have been a favorite. He got cut loose and Erickson comes in and wins the league in year 1 with Koetter's guys.

Hawkins, well yeah, he sucked.

First of all I am kind of shocked b/c Petersen loved the flirting but seemed to not really want to leave for more intense environments. I kind of thought he was going to stay at BSU his whole career.

As for what it means for us and the Pac 12…First of all I think it means no more competing with BSU for good talent. I would bet that now very few kids with good BCS offers (especially Pac 12 in the same geographic region more or less) would actually commit to BSU without Petersen.

I am less worried about a bump in Washington b/c they were already pretty damn good and pretty good at recruiting top talent under Sark so I don't think Petersen is honestly going to do any better or do more damage to us on the recruiting front from UW.

I honestly think this is good news for us b/c I don't think Petersen is going to be much better than Sark and I think we just "eliminated" a recruiting competitor in BSU. Of course in the future hopefully we would never compete with BSU, but during our rebuilding process, I think there is a lot of overlap in the type of kids HCMM is able to get now and the type Petersen was getting in Boise.

I hope our staff is going over the commit list at BSU with a very fined-tooth comb b/c I would suspect a ****load would be willing to jump ship. I say this b/c to me it is different committing to a program like BSU vs. a UW or USC, etc. in the sense that even with a coaching change, those schools already have world-class traditions, facilities, recruiting classes, etc.

Whereas in the case of BSU, especially after a less than stellar year, with a new coach (probably not a big named one either), that is not going to be an attractive option for kids with BCS offers.

Hawkins lost a big piece of his success when OC Peterson stayed at BSU as HC. Similarly, Peterson began his slide when his OC, Bryan Harsin, went to UTex. (Harsin is now HC at Ark. State.)

It will be interesting to see who Peterson brings in as OC at UW.

Wow, surprised he took the leap finally after everybody courting him.
IMO, Boise will slide back to mediocrity (already have been last couple of years) and Washington will regress over the next few years (big boy ball is different). Peterson got Boise as far as he could (kinda like Wristen at CSU-P).
This could help us in our recruiting since CU and Boise seem to be on a lot of the same kids, meh?

I think this is a good hire for Washington and I expect Petersen to do well there. It will be interesting to see if he brings most of his assistant coaches from Boise with him, or if he assembles a new coaching staff with proven BCS-conference recruiters. If the latter, I think the Huskies could be pretty good.

I think it's a good hire and I think he might be the first Boise coach to be successful elsewhere.

He is definitely falling into the best situation he could possibly hope for. Loaded roster, brand new facilities, and some turnover happening in the Pac-12. Good move for UW and CP.

The Mountain West just keeps getting worse and worse. Losing its best two coaches in the last two seasons in Peterson and Anderson.

I agree. In his case, he doesn't need staff cohesion to help pull the program out of the gutter, as MacIntyre did. He will have tons of talent and a storied, winning program that lets him take the wheel without much compromising. Hopefully some of the conference shakeups leave CU some opportunity - maybe the late recruiting focus works out more in our favor.

Awesome. Boise Pete is not going to fare well in the glare of Dawg mania up there. He sulked and bitched and moaned when the Boise faithful, all 150 of them, griped about some losses this year. Just wait until he gets a new one ripped four or five times a year because he isn't bringing in Don James level success. This is a good hire for CU. 'Holic said it above, Koetter did a decent job at ASU. Nutt flames out everywhere he goes. HaLk can't even light the match in order to flame out. Boise Pete is going to flail. Mark my words.

This seems like very bad news... Then again, as we know, big hires from Boise State don't always work out.
Good move for him regardless IMO, I think he took Boise as far as it could go and it appears to be going downhill. Sometimes you have to leave a sinking ship, no matter how good it was.

Let's see who they get, you probably would've thought a decade ago, they'd lose a lot with Hawk, they didn't, they got better. I still expect Boise to be a player, even if they are losing a step here.

I'm not that surprised at all, Kirk Herbstreit hinted at it earlier this year, how this was the year he could finally leave Boise. I think he realized after this year, he wasn't going to take Boise that much farther and he did all he could do there.

^^^^^^^Sonny Lubick's epitaph

It will be interesting to see what Boise does. They are not big enough to grab one of the shooting stars. Do they grab someone who is recreating their legacy? Where is Bobby P right now?

I think UW is a good fit, because unlike USC he's not going to be expected to immediately compete for P-12 championships much less national championships.

Respectfully, you aren't that familiar with average Husky fan, I take it?

I'm surprised so many people seem to think that Peterson will fail at UW and that Boise will also come back to earth. Either he can coach or he can't. If he can UW should do fine - maybe not perpetual 10 win seasons, but he'll win a lot of games. When Hawk turned out to be a failure, many people here blamed the fact that Peterson was really the brains behind the operation. I think he's a very good hire for UW.

Seen it mentioned on other boards, but the upgrades in coaches at PAC-12 schools in the last few years is ridiculous.

Maybe not as much as you, but I don't think it's USC. The administration certainly isn't going to have USC-like expectations. I don't think it's a coincidence he turned down overtures from USC, but want UW. Every fanbase is somewhat fickle and expects coaches to deliver. Not too long ago, winning 7-8 per year at Colorado and the Big 12 North wasn't good enough for Colorado, I think we'd be happy to go to a bowl now. Once we're there, we would expect more however.
