What player or players do you think will have a break out season in 2014?

Who is going to be making a major jump?

Answer how you want. Could be someone who we didn't hear from who will become a major contributor in the 2-deep, a starter who reaches all-conference level, or a new recruit/transfer who will make a big impact.

I'll answer this way:

Biggest jump from a returning player: Sefo Liufau. I think he's going to be our MVP for the next three seasons, starting in 2014. I think that he gained some invaluable experience this season, and it will translate to playing faster, more yards rushing, better TD/INT, and being the unquestioned leader of the team. I can't wait to see what he does in the offseason. Honorable mentions: Woodson Greer, Tedric Thompson, Bryce Bobo.

Biggest impact from a newcomer: Phillip Lindsay. I think he makes an impact on ST that makes us dangerous in the return game for the first time in ages. (Note: I want Deaysean Rippy to be this guy, but worried something is missing there). Honorable mentions: Dylan Keeney, Jase Franke, Lee Walker.

Yuri Wright. He's got all the physical skills, he's gained some weight and he's studied under a former college DB in Mike MacIntyre. I think he'll be vastly improved and finally live up to the lofty expectations after redshirting this year.

I am going to list those who should play who need to be good enough at their positions that we don't notice them, if you know what I mean.

Wyatt Smith
Tedric Thompson
Yuri Wright
Woodson Greer
Stephane Nembot
A TE (Slavin, Irwin, Keeney)
Our best RB in pass protection

Fewer penalties, very few botched assignments or snaps. Disciplined, smart football from these guys would be huge toward improving our win total.

Samson Kafovalu. He really stepped it up towards the end of the year. I could see an 8+ sack year out of him so long as he stays out of the doghouse.

I think "any" offensive production at TE next year is going to be impossible to go unnoticed. And I pray nightly for it...

We were actually very good in this department last year.

Jeff Thomas, goddamit.
I was going to name Jeff as well. We absolutely need him or Bobo/Dunston to be the the real deal. If not, we will have a 2012 type offense.

Also, we need to find a PR and KR that gives at least a chance at some great field position. I don't mind the PR with Spruce, but I also think you put a guy back there who can take it to the house on occasion. We won't be proficient enough to not take chances here next year. I am hoping Lee might be that guy

Gotta disagree with ya on the bolded. With Walker, Goodson, Ross, and Lee we have more speed than we did in 2012 by far and Spruce was better last year than he was his RS-Fr year. Even if neither step up I think our offense will be fine with Sefo being in year 2, same with Adkins and Ross. I'm expecting our OL to get better with Handler not at C...TE is the question mark.

Pate's point is every one of the WRs you mentioned in your post outside of Spruce have not proven anything. It is a legitimate concern.

Just not sure which is kind of exciting. There are a number of players capable of a much higher gear in 2014, and that's a good thing! Agree with many names mentioned thus far, but I will add a couple that could have a breakthrough season in 2014. One late bloomer to me who was making solid progress was Jimmie Gilbert. Given a boost in size and some additional maturity, Gilbert could elevate the effectiveness of our D line overall. Could be a huge bonus in 2014.

Also, although he already made a big impact along with many tackles in 2013, Gilliam will lead the defense more confidently and anticipate more tackles earlier in 2014. I believe his impact on other teams, and teammates will elevate in 2014. Addison could become a dominate player instead of just a very good player. Many more tackles for a loss and more turnovers are his big upside. Make those around him play to a higher standard. He has this potential.

'Tini believes more is better. No regard to quality. Stop throwing names at us. These guys are names. Just like Rippy is a name and Jeff Thomas is a name. I would love them to be players someday, but for now, they are just myths.

Surprised nobody mentioned Jeromy Irwin yet. Seems like there's been a lot of talk about him impressing last fall and would've played if not for the broken leg. I'm hoping he steps in and really provides an upgrade over.. well.. anyone.

I'm also hoping Jimmie Gilbert can put on some weight and attempt to replace CUD's production (which was pretty disappointing imo)

I agree.

What I think we can also agree on is that the roster has a lot better athletes in 2014 than it did in 2012 or 2013. Embree did some work there and MacIntyre has continued to upgrade.

Now we just have to see if they step up and start looking like a BCS football team.
