How much money is wasted on all of these new uniforms?

So much money is spent on amateur college sports. All of the multiple special game uniforms seem like a complete waste of money. Thanks to Oregon for finding another way to make money a bigger part of college football. I hope cu stays traditional and avoids this wasteful practice.

Yeah let's not get uniforms that recruits want. Let's keep with the old ass 90's style uniforms that only old Buff fans really care about

You can't stop uniform discussions, you can only hope to contain them.

I think "uniforms" is about the least interesting thing in sports. If switching them around catches the eyes of recruits, gets you mentioned on ESPN and makes some extra money -- then do it. I don't understand why uniforms have an impact. I don't even know if things are so saturated with this gimmick that it's still effective. Whatever.

The topic of "uniforms" annoys me. The uniforms themselves? They don't move the needle for me one way or the other.

I don't like the multi-uniform deal, especially when the uni's don't even come close to school colors.

With that I don't think there is actually any cost to the schools for most of these. The schools that are doing it are mostly high profile schools with contracts with suppliers that provides the uniforms at no cost. For the suppliers it means they sell more of their stuff.

Found an article on what Oregon does with theirs. http://blog.oregonlive.com/behindducksbeat/2011/02/the_bachscore_where_oregon_duc.html

All in all I doubt it cost the major schools much if anything.

Keep it with your coors and its fine. **** baylor for using black.
I don't care what nike does besides using ONLY Gold, Black, and Silver.

fify......Oh, and just shoot the guys who do the unis for Va Tech!

How much do the uniforms cost versus lots of the other things that schools do to recruit kids. Neuheisal flying over a kids game in a helicopter, schools putting in "athletic computing centers" which happen to run all the latest video games. etc. etc.

Schools are going to use uniforms one way or another. The ones used in games get torn up pretty quickly anyways so they get replaced frequently. The uni's are being provided by the companies that want to sell them anyways. Non-issue costwise.

I remember hating when the Broncos switched unis, specifically getting rid of the D on the helmet for that coked up horse...then they won the super bowl and no one cared.

If you have different uniform combos and you're Southern Miss, it's wasted. If you're Arizona State and you have a winning record based off some blowouts and wear things no one's ever seen before it appears to be enough to make sought-after recruits stop giving a sh*t that they are committing to a mercenary head coach who may not even be there when they are juniors. So for non-traditional programs on the rise like Oregon, ASU, Baylor, why the hell not? UnderArmor's change ups with Texas Tech seemed to be a big part of why people consistently gave a damn about a perennial 7 or 8 win team with a losing record in conference. Flashy offense + risk taking on the uniform front seems to = Recruiting tiebreakers and increased exposure for a team okay with never winning the big one.

Don't the players come out in whats essentially a new uniform every game? At least the starters?

What Nik mentions above is why they do it; its marketing. They get mentioned on espn. People notice. it re-affirms the companies name recognition in a time when people fast forward thru the Nike commercials. You can't fast forward thru the game.

If anyone is still questioning if the uniform thing interest recruits, did you catch the Under-Armour High School bowl yesterday?

BuffUp, I'm struggling to follow your argument here.

Did all the high school players boycott the game and then decide to play when they unveiled these uniforms? I know how hard it can be to get these kids to participate in the high school all-star types of games, so I could see where the uniform is the only possible draw.

I think he's just pointing out how the uniform evolution and even overblown unveilings of new designs has trickled down to the high school level. It's not just Oregon and a couple wacky Nike schools on the college level doing this anymore.

b-i-n-g-o and pointing out that at even the high school level is on the "uniform" wagon

was kinda refreshing watching Alabama vs Oklahoma fighting it out in traditional uniforms. Lots of these bowl teams were over the top with their bowl uniforms.

My take is, if you wait long enough the old tradition always cycles back around.

If you are good enough for long enough you don't need gimmicky uniforms to catch the attention of recruits. Schools like Bama and Oklahoma can walk a kid through the trophy room and the questions are answered.

Schools like Oregon and Maryland could show off all their national championship trophies, Heisman's, major bowl trophy's etc. . . . . . . .. . . . . except they don't have enough to make an impressive display, so they go with a gimmick, uni's.

Oregon fans think they are a national power deserving of the respect that some other programs get. When they have accomplished enough that they don't need dayglo helmets to get attention then they can talk about tradition and being respected.

I think you're reading way too much into the uniform thing being some statement by Oregon that they are a power program. It's about getting some attention, selling more merchandise, giving the players/recruits what they like, and having a little fun. No big deal IMO, the world changes, we need to get used to it.

No, I'm not saying the uniform thing is a statement by the program that it is a power program, as you say it is about selling merchandise and to a lesser extent recruiting (and recruiting non athlete students as well who like the image.)

My point is that a lot of their fans think they are a program on the par of a Bama, Oklahoma, etc. If they were they wouldn't have to wear clown suits to get attention on for their program.

Perfect comparison between Oregon/Maryland. If Oregon was a ~500 team or lower, no one would really care about their unis. But they are *cool* because they are good. I said the night of the Miami/Maryland game when the unis came out, it was great move for Maryland, but it would be short-lived unless they had a winning program.

Also though the Oregon uni's are "cool" because they come across as very modern pushing boundaries. Maryland's uniforms border on clown suits. Big difference between "cool" and "goofy."

Just a matter of taste, I like the MD unis and how it incorporates the state flag (I'm biased) -- I know it's not for everyone plenty of MD people don't like it.
