Why I freaked out, (An attempt to rationalize my irrational frustration)

I am fortunate enough to live in a place where I am afforded tremendous resources from the coaching world. Recently I attended a presentation from a international soccer federation on how they are attempting to utilize modern technology to advance their youth programs. While the primary focus was on soccer and winter Olympic sports, there is alot of carry over all youth sport and development. They had a ton of great ideas with technology, but a question elicited some coaching fundamentals. Basically, if you don't trust and feel liked by your coach you don't perform to your top level. Inserting a child of the team owner, or head coach creates a logistical problem in forming those critical relationships. Does the assistant coach put him in X role because he is the best, or because a personal grudge or because who is sleeping with or eating dinner with on Sunday night.

I thought Cody Hawkins was a good young man. I thought his presence created tensions on the field, in the coaching staff and most importantly in recruiting. In a perfect world, those tensions can be overcome and mitigated. I hope our coaching staff is able to do that. I believe this program is in a tough spot and there will be enough tensions without the introduction of un-necessary stress. Adding the son of the head coach is an un-necessary stress that I would have hoped George could have stopped.

The financial aspect also causes me concern. It may be childish, but granting a $200,000 bonus over four years to the family of a coach is significant while you as an institution are also out asking us for donations for other things bothers me. It just isn't ideal, and was easily avoidable.

I think you make valid points. Anybody who has coached a little league tema their son was on (I have), or watched while your son was coached on a team where the coach's son played(I have) knows the dynamic. It usually isn't optimal. It usually works itself out in Little League, not so much at higher levels.

Is it crazy to think adult fans will decide to accept this and move on? If you don't want to be a fan anymore, how about at least not being a detractor?

you are seriously coming to the wrong place for therapy.

I'm not looking for therapy or even support to my position. I am explaining why I think this is bad. Similar things have created real problems on olympic squads. It created past problems for the Buffalo's. It has been allowed to occur again. I thought it was just internet rumors and I am in shock it has occurred. In my perspective, this is bad management. It has the potential of putting a little league dynamic into a professinal organization driving millions of dollars into an AD I care about. I can't understand how it was allowed to happen.

He also hasn't said one positive thing about the kid either

I don't know the young man. I didn't say he is not worthy of CU, or a scholarship on the team.

By the service rankings, he is in the middle of our class and thus was worthy of an offer. Whether an offer should have ever been made is the issue and that is a coaching question and not an athlete ability issue.

I've recently learned that this forum isn't a place for real discussion, but rather a place to help recruit kids and hype up the program. Good luck making any point that some may consider negative. I'm a donor, a staunch supporter of CU football & hoops, and have been discouraged from posting here anymore. It's a shame, because I've been visiting this board for years and don't remember it always being like this...

If anyone cares, I'll be attending a reception with Coach Mac in LA this Friday where he'll be discussing the new class among other things. Send me a private message if you're curious about what was said.

The only worthwhile aspect of this place are the recruiting profiles. Not the discussion, just the profiles.

What the hell are you laughing at? It's your mean and bullying posts in the politics forum that drove them away!
That makes no sense. I'm only mean to Waldo, and sometimes Junction. Well, and liver. But Liver likes punishment.

In all seriousness, I know I was a jerk in my response to the OP. He was in a delicate emotional state, which didn't help.

Also, I find it funny when people are talking about how discussions on this board are worthless while having a discussion on the board.

I personally have seen the father/son thing work more often than not because the father is cognizant of the potential pitfalls and takes extreme measures to not favor his son. Most anyone I know who has played the game has no concerns outside the position of QB.

It's all been done before, many many times. It just so happens that one of the most epic fails in history happened here, recently.

I gave Hawkins some benefit of the doubt early on, thinking he had to be more aware than he appeared. I've not had to question that once with HCMM. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt here.

I'm sure that's directed at me, but considering I have less than 300 posts in over two years of membership I think I can make that comment without being a hypocrite.

Exactly.

I would love to know...but your PM inbox is full.

This isn't Little League. They don't eat orange slices and drink Capris Suns at half time. Mac played successfully for his dad. Jay doesn't play quarterback. Give it a frigging rest. There is not a damned thing wrong with him playing for his home state university. Why should he not be able to? His family is here and he has every right to be able to play in front of them.

When Mac continues to start his kid at QB when it's painfully obvious that his kid isn't a BC$ caliber QB, then I'll see the connections to Cody. Until then, it's just another kid playing for his dad, something that happens all the time.

If everyone can tell his J-Mac should be on the sideline, and Coach Mac does an interview and says "there is a razor hair" difference between the two players, I will be disappointed.

The financial argument is such a red herring. Plenty of kids from wealthy families get full-ride scholarships. Johnny Football's family are freekin' oil millionaires. JMac was getting a scholly somewhere, so dad, regardless of his salary, wasn't going to pay.

The real issue and concern is the potential for nepotism. Not whether coach making millions doesn't have to pay for his kid to go to school.

As for the nepotism angle, I share the concern based on our recent experiences, but I'm also choosing to give HCMM the benefit of the doubt because I think it is unfair to hold someone else's mistakes (if that's what you believe regarding the Hawkinses) against another. Only time will tell if it was the right call.

You either trust Mike MacIntyre's judgment or you don't.

If you are of the opinion that he does not exercise good judgment on what players are going to be good additions to the program (including his son), then you should be calling for his head.

I trust Mike MacIntyre. He played major college football for his dad. He knows the drill and how to manage it better than anyone would. Have a little faith.
