Chris Fowler replaces Musberger as play-by-play for Sat. Night Football

I know I'm going to get a lot of flack for this and I'm a Fowler fan, but I wish they had let Musburger stay in his position. I don't think he was slipping. I get that Fowler had leverage, but I would've liked to see them try to do more of a transition which would've allowed Musburger to call atleast the first few (if not only the first) College Football Playoff games. Glad to see a CU alum get this though.

@ESPNBook Deal for @cbfowler in $35 Million range, w/yearly average in mid 3's. That's a bit higher than @KirkHerbstreit avg for @espn .

I'm a bit surprised Fowler is getting more than Herbstreit, yeah he's worked there longer and now has more responsibilities, but ESPN seems to really like Herbie (RIP nickname).

I want to see the contract Fowler signed with the devil! Spend all fall going to the best college campuses and broadcasting one of the best games of the week. Spend all winter through summer traveling to Melbourne, Paris, London, and NYC to broadcast the best tennis.

Kidding about the devil. This guy works harder than anyone else and he's the glue that holds their college football and tennis coverage together. He deserves whatever he can get.

I will always like Musberger after his on-air rant during the Cal/UTenn game a few years ago. "That's a pretty good deal if you're a TREE HUGGER!!!" Absolute classic.

Brent had his annoying quirks, but so do all announcers. I never had the problem with him that many do. However, Fowler had the juice at the right time, so have fun wading through all the jorts and plumber's cracks, Brent.

you are wrong, as usual.

Agree on the quirks with all announcers having them. Announcing is a lot harder than people think especially out of the studio, atleast with that you're mostly following a script and/or being told what to say. Breaking news/live events are all on the fly. People always like to point out "stupid things" announcers say. Try spending 3-4 hours in a broadcast booth and avoiding that. On tap of that with social media, you have millions critiquing these announcers every move.

Not sure how I'm wrong, this is opinion based. I sure as hell don't need your approval.
not all opinions are created equal. Mushmouth had lost a step. Listen to a broadcast from 10 years ago (or in 2001) and then compare it to recent ones.

I think it's easy to forget how long Brent Musberger has been doing this. He was doing NFL games for CBS in the 1970's. Dude is a lifer. Maybe he's lost a step, but he's still pretty good, IMO.

He did everything at CBS -- hosted the first real NFL studio show, cfb games, golf, tennis, NBA, college basketball, was supposed to do baseball before he got fired.

He did the local news at one point as well and the CBS' NYE show. He's a legend.

Mooseburgers had lost a step on a delivery that was already two steps behind. All I want to hear him say is "theebeduh theebeduh theebeduh that's all, folks!"

I liked Musburger. Seems like a good guy, and he has a great sportscaster voice. Still, congrats to CF! Hopefully he'll be calling a lot of Buffs games in the near future.

still the best Musberger moment.

Well, you must be one of his "folks." For some reason that always bugged me, seems canned and disingenuous.
