Ray Polk - Great Buff AND a Great Safety? (from recruit thread)

Ah, interesting. Then hopefully he can right away be what Ray Polk ended up being for us, and then some if he stays healthy. Lots of DBs in this cycle who I really wish CU could get. Even in-state there are more names than usual of potential candidates this year.
Ray Polk was a gifted athlete but a terrible safety. Hope he is way better than him.

Have to disagree. Polk was a gifted athlete but was not a terrible safety. What he was is a safety who was put in a terrible situation. He played on a defense that had at best in inconsistent pass rush and some CB play that was best described as lacking. Polk spent a lot of time trying to cover up for the failures of others. Fans got pissed at him becouse they say him chasing recievers into the end zone, problem was that often those guys weren't Ray's man and they guy they beat was completely out of the picture.

If this guy is a good enough athlete to be recruited at multiple positions and wants to play DB, I'd love to see us get a chance to let him have his wish.

In hindsight I have thought of him in relative terms. Someone I hated to see get hurt because he and Perkins were still the best we had out there.

I am not going to pile on Polk so I will just say he took bad angles and was a personal foul machine and leave it at that.

Did he have some flags, yes. Probably because the refs were shocked to see anyone on that defense actually hit someone on the opposing team.

He also had some deficiencies as a safety. If he didn't he would be in the NFL right now despite his injury history.

As far as the bad angles again much of what looked like bad angles came from trying to cover up for the other guys in the defensive backfield. When you have guys like Espy trying to play CB against high D1 WRs you are going to see a lot of guys running free. Ray spent lots of time trying to decide which blown coverage to try to chase after. Add to this a running mate in Perkins who because of injuries was maybe the slowest starting safety in the conference and it's easy to see why Polk ended up frequently being the closest (or only) DB to the play.

He made an easy scapegoat for frustrated fans watching teams score almost at will on the Buffs sometimes but like most scapegoats the true fault wasn't his.

I'd be more than happy to see another Ray Polk or two on this roster right now.

Should have never been moved to safety. Would have helped us after the Scott debacle at RB.

The guy willingly signed up for safety when we needed one badly. Bush league to call out a guy because he wasn't playing his natural position and didn't meet the expectations of a 4* safety recruit. A true Buff.

Definitely would have like to have seen what he could have done at RB.
