BDC Editorial Board on Facilities upgrade

boulder being boulder.

They just assume that even without football there would still be this pile of money from the PAC 12 football contract to spend on other more important things like global warming and finding cures to drug resistant bacteria.

The Athletic Academy? CU? A football business? Laughable.

If you want to look at institutions that invest in athletics that better deserve that title, turn your eyes to those academic slouches in Austin, Madison, Berkeley and Palo Alto. Those are the real Athletic Academies.

But what really gets me is the re-emergence of the argument that these are funds diverted from education. I get that uninformed people on the street are going to adopt that argument, but is there no requirement for the editorial board to know where those funds are coming from before they share their opinion? Obviously not.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: If I could choose one slogan in my life (and truthfully, I think I can), it would be "Do not hold strong opinions on things you don't understand." I didn't think that would need to be waved in faces of the BDC editorial board.

There may be some good arguments against the facilities upgrades, but this group largely managed to miss them.

My thoughts exactly. It's not like there's $145M out there and we have to choose how to spend as we want. All this money comes from the athletic department (read: football).

Theres a vocal minority, of which the BDC is a loud voice, which looks down in condescension at anyone who doesn't tow the "enlightened" line. Football gets people continually engaged in the university, from that you can raise money. You aren't going to get 45K people to plop down $70+ for 6 Saturdays to watch microbiologists work or get million dollar contracts with Nike to sell Global Climate Change swag.

The BDC helps give Boulder its reputation, which I don't see in the population of Boulder as a whole.

And they wonder why readership continues to plummet as people turn to the web for their news and information.

The editorial board is a opinion generating body. The problem is that their opinions are so far from representing any logical position, either pro or against, that they aren't worth paying to read. Bring in some intelligent discourse and your business might not be in trouble.

BDC editorial board entering Denver Post territory.

It's as if outrage readership is better than no readership.
the death spiral is in motion.

The editorial page of a newspaper these days is just old people yelling at clouds.

A rebuttal from Bruce Benson would be in order, though.

And it is disappointing as hell that the local paper that has a virtual exclusive on daily coverage of the CU athletics beat would come out in opposition to the university making efforts to deliver a great product.

Doesn't matter - so long as CU has the attitude that 'we're going to do what we want regardless of your opinion Boulder' then they will be fine

Nice to see the "editorial advisory board" has such diversity of thought. Were they all chosen from the same pool? Shouldn't such a group offer differing view points?

What more evidence is required to show these people that a great university and excellent athletic programs compliment each other?

Can't happen look at failures like Stanford, Michigan, Notre Dame, etc.

These people don't care about the facts. They are angry that the huge majority of people are much more interested in sports than in their personal interest. They also somehow imagine that if college sports didn't exist that these same donors would gladly donate the same amount of funds to their personal favorites. They refuse to consider that all the evidence shows that not to be the case and in fact that universities with successfull athletic programs tend to have more donations to non-athletic purposes than those that don't have successful programs. Donors like to be associated with success.

I think they are getting the desired reaction.

Funny thing is, they probably don't realize that they alienated the sports fans among their subscribers who now feel that the editorial direction of the BDC does not represent them.

I'm sure that this will help their struggling business attract subscribers while not costing them any.

Good luck with your business model, BDC.

Typical Boulder granola blathering. CU brings in $2 Billion a year via tuition to fund academics and pay professors. The AD is a separate entity ( A few $10 million loans not withstanding)

I usually read the BDC and use the bag it came in to pick up the dog's poo bombs. Maybe I should do it the other way around?

Responding to this nonsense would likely take triple the words that the actually wrote, but anyone who describes Franklin as "cherished green lawn of Folsom field to a football practice facility" should be immediately dismissed. It is a terrible field and immediate injury risk for any intramural or club athlete forced to play on it because it's so degraded due to... football parking. Grass for grass's sake is nothing to be "cherished." This is just so, so dumb.

To say nothing of the fact that moving football south of the creek recovers the 2 fields on the north side where the current practice fields are located.

Also, I'd like to know how many trees have to die every year to produce the BDC.

Well, those "cherished" green lawns would still exist, just under different control. And why aren't they bitching about all of the other new academic buildings? About the parking added under C4C? Why aren't the environmentalists complaining about retrofitting the dorms with air conditioning, which contributes CFCs to the environment? This is just infuriatingly stupid.

Hell- one of them was complaining about student debt. Why not focus that finger wagging on the state legislature who has dropped Colorado to 48th in the nation in public funding for higher education? You know, things that would make a damn difference.

The kisla school of provoking response of any kind.

Exactly why I refuse to click on that link. They're not getting a penny out of a piece of crap like that if I can help it.

If they're truly that worried about bees, I think FC has shown them what they can do about it.
