So who has recommendations for hotels in Berkeley for the game in late September? We're looking for a place in Berkeley (so not SF or Oakland) where we know we'll have the camaraderie of other CU fans as well. That way we can continue the celebration from the bars at the hotel. Thanks guys.

Shattuck. It's within walking distance of the Berkeley BART and campus.

But don't feel the need to stay in Berkeley. With the rail line, you can stay anywhere in San Francisco.
 
I haven't looked at the alum stuff but there will be an official travel hotel for CU I think. You should check that. Berkeley as a rule isn't that nice. It is like a dirtier, more congested, and much less scenic version of boulder. Or as one of my cal buddies said after his first visit to boulder "it is like you took Berkeley, cleaned out all the poor people, hired Disney to reimagine the town as a fantasy, and then rebuilt it next to the mountains."

The Claremont is the closest nice hotel but you'll have to arrange transport to the game. They will likely have shuttle service. If you stay in sf, you can take the Bart to within a couple blocks of the stadium and the Bart is, far and away, the best way to get in and out. The parking is nightmarishly bad. And you don't want to walk too far afield from the cal area.
 
Thanks. We've been to Berkeley before for some horrific game a few years ago where we lost something like 52-14. I don't remember much from that, but it is like a grittier, dirties Boulder without the nice backdrop of the mountains.

I did some research and found the hotel that the alumni association grabbed is the Marriott in Walnut Creek, which is about 16 miles east of Berkeley with no transportation to the game. So....great job alumni association!

What I think we're primarily concerned about is ease of getting to the game, but also reveling with other CU fans before and after the game. I feel like we wouldn't be able to hang with as many CU fans in SF than we would in Berkeley. Seems like that Hotel Shattuck might be the one, but we'll see...

Walnut creek is on the Bart line. Easiest way to the game by far. That's probably why there is no special transport provided. I live between Berkeley and walnut creek and I'll be taking the Bart for sure unless I go with a friend who has a special tailgate permit. Have fun!

I stayed at the Shattuck. It was nice enough. I hardly remember the room because it was mainly just a convenient a place to crash.

I did not rent a car and didn't miss it. Flew into SFO and was able to go everywhere by train. This is the only road trip where a car is 100% not necessary. The savings on rental car justified the hotel rate. There is so much to do on foot, between the nearby bars and campus exploration. It was great being able to close down the bars on Telegraph, stumble home, and have no hassle whatsoever on game day morning. The hotel was a staging place on Saturday, where some friends met to chug a few cold guys before wandering up to the pregame festivities.

Dont stay in walnut creek because it introduces a car rental into the equation.

If there is no vacancy at Shattuck, just pick a hotel near a Bart station in SFO.

2010 scoreline was actually 7 points worse than that. And to think some of our guys were jumping around in the end zone revving up the massive Buff contingent right before the slaughter.

I agree with the 2nd statement above. But the first isn't correct. Oak and sfo are both on the Bart as is walnut creek and Berkeley. And walnut creek has a nice downtown with lots of bars and restaurants. You don't need a car unless you intend to sight see off the Bart routes.

If it were me, I'd stay in sf. But to each his own.

I intend to significantly anesthetize before kickoff, just in case of a repeat of the last disaster. But I hope we see better.
 
Staying at the Courtyard in downtown Oakland. Stayed there for work before and it is pretty nice and in a decent neighborhood. Only about 4 miles from Berkley.
 
when we played cal and hawk **** the bed, we stayed in SF and took Bart over. There were a ton of Buffs fans staying in SF then and there was hardly a non CU fan on the Bart. We even had the cheerleaders riding over with us doing cheers along the way. Even though the game sucked, there was enough for us to do in SF that i quickly forgot about the game and had a good time.

Don't stay in Walnut Creek. That's lame. If you do, you can take BART to Rockridge and then take a taxi down College Ave for the game. You can also take the 51 Bus to campus from there if you want save cab fare. Rockridge has a few cool bars and lots of restaurants catering to the Mountain Hippie type.

The shuttles are usually packed on game days but you can still catch a ride. Don't expect to find a taxi taking you back after the game but the walk isn't that bad-especially if you have a nice heat. Their little bar kicks ass.

The Hotel Shattuck which Skiddy mentioned is about the same price and is also legit. It's way closer to the Southside bar and restaurant scene and you can stumble to and from BART as you please. If you can't stay in one of those two, I'd stay in the City and take BART to the Downtown Berkeley exit.

Good point it is almost criminal to not stay downtown.
 
How much are you looking to spend? I'd say stay in San Francisco, there will be plenty of CU fans staying there - when any of the bigger schools are playing at Cal you will see lots of their fans in the city. BART is really easy, probably preferable to trying to park near campus anyway. I also see the CU Alumni Association is doing an event at the Thirsty Bear in downtown SF on Friday - that would be a great place to start an evening of bar hopping, get a few pre-dinner drinks or whatever. There are some 'interesting' neighborhoods near to Union Square, but generally the chain hotels are decent, but not spectacular - just be sure they are a short walk to BART.

The bars in Berkeley are pretty underwhelming to visitors - even more so now that Raleigh's has burned down and the Bear's Lair is now just a hole in the ground construction site. In addition to the Claremont and Shattuck Plaza, the Durant Hotel is close to the stadium a gameday hub, and you can even piss on this stanford themed unrial in the bar (which will be absolutely packed with a line out front). There are other cheaper motels down University Ave in Berkeley, nothing great, but they might work. Also easier to park a car there. Walnut Creek seems to be a bit far - I've stayed at that exact hotel, and wished I were close in. It is a decent place if you have a car and will be doing some site-seeing by car and don't want to pay the $40-50/night parking fees in the city.

One warning about BART - if the game happens to be a night game (730-8pm start), the last train from downtown berkeley is either 12:08am or 12:30am, so if the game goes 4 hours it might be cutting it close. Especially since it might take 2-3 trains to really clear out a crowd.

The City Center Oakland Marriott or Courtyard are also good bets even on a typical weekend - but they appear to be close to selling out and not much of a discount from SF. (In fact everything seems to be very expensive in SF that weekend too.) But those two hotels are steps from BART, so easy to get in to SF and to Berkeley. Also, an easy cab/uber ride down from Berkeley, just in case.

It was pretty incredible on the ride over. ****ing PACKED with Buffs…we owned the place until 3 seconds into the game.

The bear's lair was out of control with buffs fans. "here come the assholes" So much fun until kickoff.

This is the Courtyard we are booked in for Friday and Saturday nights. Looks pretty nice and the Bart station is so close. Also a brew pub less than a block away that is pretty damn good.
 
Stay at the Ritz Carlton in Half Moon Bay. Yeah, it's like, a two hour drive to Berkely from there. So what. Bring your clubs. Thank me later.

If I were going to the game, I'd be staying at a house that's about 500 yards due East of that building. So yeah, I know it's a long way away. I'm sure there's a BART station somewhere within about a 45 minute drive of HMB. The game is only one day. Gotta do something the rest of the time you're there, right? :lol:
