Umass Depth Chart - some changes

Changes on the offensive line = none.
OL statistics show the following guys struggled:

Crabb: 76.7% game grade
Kelley: 79.5% game grade
Nembot: 72.6% game grade.

Irwin was 86 ish and Munyer 90 ish.

That's no bueno. Not horrible though. Last year was horrible. Nembot's best was 69.2, and the only starter that was over 80%, or even close, was Jack Harris. The thing was, the mistakes they did make on Friday were really bad and got Sefo or our RBs killed. Real Ole stuff.

Nembot has improved, but to a below average level. How much longer can they go with this experiment?

Did Bobo play at all against CSU?

Yes. Almost caught a TD late. We subbed a lot less than I thought we would at WR.

I saw him on one play in the 4th. Sefo overthrew him on a fly pattern IIRC.

Believe it was the last attempt to score. Overthrown mostly because the WR fell. CSU DB was in good position to make a play too if it had been a touch shorter. Weird he wasn't out there that often though.

True. It seemed the only place to put the ball on that play was to air it out and hope the WR could get under it, if Sefo hung it up, it was a likely pick.

Jeromy Irwin=STUD?

Lost in the meltdown was his great play. First game at LT (didn't even play in HS)

Shawn (sp?) Irwin also had a reasonable game. Several catches in the first half. I'm not sure about his blocking, (hard to see from my seat) but I think he showed he can be depended on.

Still baffled by the non-start of Callahan...

:bang:

This is just stupid, I saw Callahan at the scrimmage and he is ready. This OL coach must be stubbornly standing by his decision to play certain guys and apparently is not making any changes. If Callahan ever gets to go out there and kill it - the old coach is going to look like a dumbsht for not starting him.

I feel like the coaches are in over their heads. I understand keeping the players you have if there are no better choices but we have a guy ready, willing and able.

Well Callahan will play, just don't know when. I'd think he'd be first off the bench at least.

I am getting that sinking feeling I got in October of 2008.

Others have said it, Auburn saw Callahan as an OT, practiced there for 2 years and was 2d team. So am I to conclude our staff thinks Nembot would start at Auburn?

Could it be that, oh I don't know, Callahan has been been here less than two months has practiced with us for less than 3weeks and may not have the play calls down 100% or the terminology.

Just a guess.

Good thing Shay Fields doesn't have that problem....oh wait.

Shay fields doesn't have 2.5 years of a previous college staff drilling their terminology and play calling into him. Maybe Shay picks that stuff up faster than Shane, maybe the WR position is easier to learn. Maybe Shay's athletic ability allows him to cover some of those issues. I don't know.

This staff has shown they will put the player who gives us the best chance to win into the game, unless they are trying to preserve his red shirt.

Unpossible! Bone63 saw him, or someone who looked like him, at a scrimmage and has proclaimed him ready!

I'm with Lefty on the concern about where they play him, rather than when they play him. We didn't lose last week because of our OL. They can play better but they were serviceable. The DL on the other hand...

Neither do I, but given the OL play, it is within the pale to question what Bernardi is doing. Christian Shaver, another true frosh is listed as a probable starter for another example. Shay Fields also doesn't have the benefit of 2.5 years of college level FB experience. You can spin this any way you want, but it still looks pretty goofy to me. All reports from camp (thanks Slider) were Callahan looked as good as anybody, sometimes better, but there he sits while Sefo and the RB's pray for protection....JMO.

Sefo didn't get sacked once.

RB's sometimes had no holes and other times chose not to use them. They only complaint I had with the OL was their inability to get us in the endzone from the 2.

Sefo is really, really good at throwing the ball away in the nick of time. He was hurried plenty and drilled a few times.

First bold: true, but if you saw the close ups in the fourth, the kid was battered by getting planted right after he threw. Nembot was getting burned on the speed rush frequently, had a nice takedown on one though.

Second: could not agree more.

The OL was serviceable usually, but when it screwed up, it was spectacular. The fourth quarter Nembot ole show or the occasional unimpeded bum rush up the middle were really miserable.

The couple up the middle on some of our screens happened too fast. The OL didn't give Sefo enough time to drop back far enough from the L.O.S. blew up a few screens because of it.

But as you said, serviceable. They play that way and they won't be the reason we lose games. Even without Callahan.

He did to get sacked, I know for sure once. About got decapitated too, outside the pocket, chili shot. I don't care where they put Callahan, if he can help get a push, put his ass on the field.

They will get Sefo killed though. No consistency to the level of performance. When they get beat, they get beat so bad it will kill a QB.

Also, I hate having Spruce fielding punts. He just doesn't have game changing ability there. Please give Fields a chance.

Not to mention it is dangerous having our most reliable offense weapon in a position to get himself seriously hurt. No need for it.
