Senior guard wants to make amends for bad tourney loss

Ski at PG is very interesting. Love hearing where his head is and about the work he's put in.

My predictions on what the beginning of the season rotations look like.

1-xt/ski/dom/eli
2-ski/jaron/Fletch/Eli
3-XJ/Fletch/DT/G King
4-Wes/XJ/DT
5- J40/Wes/T Miller

I'm thinking that talent wins out with our main rotation and we see a lot more of Dom and Fletch being go-to guys this year than the vast majority of fans are currently projecting.

I expect Dom to have a freshman season and usage similar to what we saw from Spencer as a freshman. Situational usage as the primary ball handler, but not putting all of that on his shoulders from day one. Like Dre as a freshman, he might not be a starter but will be a finisher.

Tad needs to find a shooter to spread the court for Josh. He might go smaller than we expect in order to make that happen. Our most effective lineup might very well be:

Scott
XJ
Fletch
Dom
Ski

I am still of the opinion that if Ski starts at the 1, Fletcher has a great opportunity at the 2.....would give us really good wing play with him and XJ....if Ski starts at the 2 then Jaron will probably be the starting 1

I like this - although I think Fletch is gonna get some quality minutes.

"Once we step on that floor, you're going to see another person this year."

He's come a long way. Impossible not to root for him. Hopefully he shows NBA scouts he can be a consistent play maker and passer. He could make a NBA roster. If not, could tear it up overseas.

Aside from Scott, I thought XT showed the most improvement last year. Still, I would prefer to see him coming off the bench as a designated shooter. Just think our D suffers some with XT as opposed to some of our other options, as does our ability to get in the lane and either finish or draw the foul.
Of course, I say all this assuming that Fletch and J-Hop have upped their games.

XT is one of the better team defenders we have. Knows the scouting report, knows when to be in help..

My only problem with XT's D was at the beginning of last year. It appeared like he was trying to do more than he should. His frosh year (and towards the end of the season) he was always in position, never flashy, but solid. However to start last year he seemed to be trying to do too much.

At the beginning, everyone was trying to replace Dre. Then everyone was trying to be Spencer. Once they all started playing their own games was when we started to get some momentum.

Early last year, that was a lot of guys. Tad was regularly pissed at how many open shots were given up. Despite injuries and the disruption to rotations, the defense did seem to tighten up as they got into the season. It was still a long way from what it was in previous seasons under Tad. I'm chalking that up to youth. And I'm hoping to see team defense like we had with the AD/Nate senior year but with the higher level athleticism & depth the squad now has. If that comes together, this is a team that has the pieces to advance in the Tourney.

You can't just chalk it up to youth though. Dre had a lot to do with the team's defensive & rebounding capabilities. Not to say the young guys don't have tools to make the team a damn good defensive team, but Dre was an elite defensive talent, and that is hard to replace.

I agree, he seemed to be caught in no man's land way to many times. He was trying to keep an eye on his man on the perimeter, but would try to help on the inside. He wasn't fast enough to recover and was caught out of position.

you guys are giving me flashbacks. Stop it.

You can in the context of team defensive concepts, which is what I was addressing. Dre was an anomaly, for sure. But what I saw last season was the team defense breaking down on penetration or ball movement. I saw some confusion on switches. I saw some misses on help defense. I saw some breakdowns on weak side rebounding following rotations. That's all team defense stuff that veteran teams are simply a lot better at implementing correctly. The stuff I was referring to wasn't so much about having an individual stopper or defensive freak, it was about being sound. We weren't as sound last year.

Absolutely. I think we both had quite a few "don't do that" moments.

btw - not to threadjack, but I'm dying to start with some real basketball previews. Is it too early to start analyzing metrics from last season and looking at the Pac-12 race? Thread like this one will work for now, though. I can probably hold off until the team has at least held a practice, I guess.

speaking of practice, any open practices this year?

No, it is not. 43 days!

Goose already did that. You should rep him.

I'm not going to get too excited about Ski taking a huge jump this year, but man, that would be rather awesome.

Guy who does the Blue Ribbon preview said the PDF may be ready as early as next week.

The question is whether any practices will be announced as "open". In past years, other than scrimmages Tad has pretty much had an open door policy. Some of us stopped by to watch the team one day and not only did they let us in, staff assistants went to find extra chairs for us and then Tad came over to talk to us and thank us for our support after practice. Best thing to do is probably send a Direct Message tweet to RK, Adam or Will ahead of a practice you were thinking about going to in order to find out whether it's open.
