I keep seeing this brought up. Mac was asked about it in his post-game presser and said he didn't really consider it at the time. But it seems like fans on this board and others were thinking that the Mac should have gone for 2 there. Or at least gone for 2 after scoring in the 1st OT.

I've got to admit, the thought of going for 2 didn't even enter my mind. In hindsight, we lost so it couldn't have been a worse decision that playing it out and letting the chips fall in OT.

What were you thinking at the time those situations came up yesterday?
 
I was ok with going to OT, but our defense had not been able to stop Cal's O the entire 2nd half. I think if we were at home we should play it safe and rely on a stop, but on the road, I think you go for the throat.
 
I agreed with sending it to OT but felt we should have ended it in the 1st OT with a try for 2.
 
We should have gone for 2, imo, and was thinking it at the time. A game like that... Take your shot

I'm comfortable with Mac's choice.
i was wrongfully confident Cal was going to step on their dicks before we did.

Oops.
 
In a game like that with our D being abysmal, I was absolutely in favor. I was even somewhat surprised we didn't.
 
Makes the win more epic to go for 2. If we had been stopped, it would have been justified by not deserving to win anyway since we pissed away our nice lead we had built to start the game.
 
I was fine going to OT. We had momentum, but there was still :21 seconds to play, and we had been on the field for a couple minutes. However, with the way we answered on the first play of OT, I would have used that momentum and gone for two. We had the advantage of playing O second, and I think our guys had to be playing on fumes.
 
The offense was playing so well I think I would have chickened out on going for two. Thinking we could keep scoring.
 
I would've preferred the FG at the 2OT and hope our D holds them to a FG and force a 3rd OT. Looking at the game now and after listening to MM, I agree with him and just try to punch it in. QB sneak, Powell, Frazier, anything...just bad time for a miscue. Team is getting better though....lot of reps yesterday for these young men.

I wouldn't have been pissed either way if he did decide to go for two, even if we didn't get it.
 
This is one of those "hindsight" polls. Very few, if any, coaches would have gone for 2. And if he had and not been successful, while I'm sure many would've applauded him, he'd have been ripped in some circles.

Aren't the odds of converting less than 50-50 across the board? And don't we struggle scoring from there, as evidenced by our final series? There'd have been a **** load of pressure on the kids to execute and look what happened on the final play.

So far we have proven time and time again we can't push it in on the goal line. I would have been pissed if we tried and failed.
 
I thought about it for a second them I remembered I had a bunch of beer during the game and realized that was a bad idea.
 
I was w/HCMM....With that said,going for it in 2nd OT is kinda akin to 2 pt try in regulation or even OT,so if you're doing that then, why not go for it earlier w/2 pointer.I don't know hindsight is always 20/20,that one hurt,a blowout woulda been easier to handle on the surface.It is what it is...

To psychologically put it on your team to win this game now and the perception in the media that we came here to win, not tie, I think you go for it. Of course in hindsight anything looks better than that last play being run on highlight shows.
 
Wanted 2 in the first OT. We had already missed 3 FG in the game, and our D was not able to stop anything. The longer OT played out the bigger advantage to Cal.
 
I was fine taking OT at the end of regulation. I thought they should have gone for 2 in 1st OT.
 
I don't get the approval for going for 2 in OT v regulation. We were lucky to get the chance to go for 2 in OT - going for 2 in regulation had the same odds...


Going by pure percentages: odds at a 2 pt conversion are ~ 40%. Odds at winning in OT are slightly above 50% (i.e. 52%) when starting on D. So yeah, since we won the coin flip we slightly increased our odds at a W. But, before the coin flip (at the end of reg.) our odds of gaining the advantage by playing for OT were 0.5 x 0.52 or ~ 25%.


Simple game theory... Strike when you have the chance... Don't leave it up to your opponent and hope for the best.
 
I posted the question about the 2 point conversion on chat yesterday before we even scored the last TD. We had Cal's D reeling, they were confused and lacked confidence.

M2 is ultimately who makes that decision and he knows way more that I ever will but at the time I thought going for 2 would be the right decision. We were in position to take the game and go home.

The time out before the OT gave Cal time to get themselves composed. At that point we still had a chance to win but the odds swung back and they took advantage when we failed at the goal line.
 
No. David Duke would have an easier time at an NAACP rally than we would trying to score from the 2.

This. Then again we suck in RZ and goalline situations... just pick your best play and go for it.
 
I probably would have done the same thing the coaches did. I'm not certain I would have gone for it on 4th down in the 2nd OT, though. While a TD is nice, a FG at least gives your defense a chance to make something happen. A turnover, botched snap, bad hold, whatever. If they score a TD in the 2nd OT, more power to them.

Your defense had given up 52 points or whatever at that time, why put the game in the hand of your defense?
 
I voted same decision as MM - we just do not have the team to "go for it" yet.

One day SOON we will have to take those chances just to try and show the team they can will themselves a W

Because crazy chit happens in overtime. Unless you have a play that you're extremely confident in running, take the easy points. JMHO.
 
At the end of regulation, I was hoping they'd go for 2. IMO it seems that when you're on the road, that you have to take the opportunity to win while it's there. I feel like OT seems to favor the home team.
