directv and nfl renew sunday ticket

DirectV will still be the provider for sports bars around the country. We really need the Att and DirectV to go through, AND have them do some sort of channel standardization with Uverse.

bad news for pac 12?

Actually, probably good news. The ATT Uverse/DirecTV merger was dependent upon DirecTV getting the NFL Sunday Ticket. ATT Uverse already carries P12 Network. The thought being that the aqcuiring company will impose it's distribution to DTV. Hopefully. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I don't want to switch, and my contract runs out in December.

that's not how it works. the licensed rights are not identical, nor are the rates, across the 2 companies. it typically takes several years for contracts to roll off and/or be renewed until some kind of parity is achieved and that assumes parity is desired, which we don't know.

I think it's good. There was a risk that DTV would go away from expensive sports programming carriage if the deal didn't happen. AT&T wouldn't have gone through without this, either. An independent DTV without NFL plan was never going to pay market rate for PACN.

So, not necessarily good so much as status quo with some possible good outcomes stemming from this.

AT&T shareholders approved the merger or acquisition or whatever it is. So, that's good.

so we're screwed, then?

dammit!

Never mind Liver. He's a dodger fan.

Under normal circumstances, ignoring liver is a reasonable course of action. In this case, I think he probably knows more about how this stuff works than anybody else around here.

Those who shop at Costco, and yes I am addicted to it, DTV has their onsite people traveling to locations to peddle it pretty hard. I was polite, but gave the guy an ear full about the Pac 12. Also mentioned I already have the satellite sitting there idle while I currently use Comcastic.

Can't hurt to plant that seed if you are passing by them ;-)

This may alter one half of the negotiating equation, but post-merger Att/DTV will still hold more of the cards as the preeminent sports provider to the majority of bars and restaurants in the country. After the merger, what additional bargaining chip would the Pac have that they don't already have now? Very few marquee games are carried on the Pac-12 network. Larry overplayed his hand. Ball is in his court.

until the pac 12 network keeps some of the big matchups for themselves most people dont miss it ....

More true for football than BB. Tons of good P12 BB games on the network. If you don't/can't get the network, your best bet is finding a buddy who will lend their login/password to stream it. I share mine with several friends & we can watch it simultaneously on multiple devices.

Funny thing about The NFL Ticket is they offer a very selective streaming-only option which only 10 colleges & 4 cities are eligible. Luckily, CU is one & they accepted a photo of my old BuffOne card & I got the student discount.

DBT prefers to go outside and yell at clouds but hey whatever works for you.

These are my personal opinions.

Bargaining power: The combined AT&T / DTV is a monster with around 40M subscribers. Larry Scott will not be able to get the same favorable terms that he got from a stand-alone U-verse deal based upon ~6M subscriber base. The P12N network can't expect the merged AT&T/DTV to settle for the existing U-Verse terms with over six times more households that AT&T beings into the mix.

OTT: Over the top video streaming into tablets, mobile phones, and PC boxes is a natural fit for the combined AT&T/DTV. No other company matches the combination of a nation-wide wireless LTE network with over 85 million subscribers, plus a substantial IP delivery network, plus a nation-wide satellite TV network. The convergence of the mobile, IP network and satellite assets should result in a consumer product offering that bringing content to any device, on demand, whenever subscriber wants it. Because of the mobile and connected device market, AT&T should be a leader on delivering content on-demand verses cable companies like Comcast, Cox and Time Warner. Other OTT providers who might make a play to carry P12 include Amazon Prime, Google, Netflix, Hulu and Apple TV.

Content providers: Disney & ESPN are the big boys who control a big chunk of the profitable live sports content. Fox and the other traditional sports networks will be negotiating with an even more powerful delivery network. Smaller networks like the Pac-12 Network will be attractive to AT&T/DTV to diversify content not delivered by the big boys. The vision of the Larry Scott to leverage tier 3 media rights in addition to the linear broadcast model plays well with the assumed AT&T/DTV OTT strategy.

Prediction: Larry Scott will be the first to blink and settle for less revenue per subscriber. The deal probably won't happen until well after the merger closes. Don't hold your breath for DTV to carry the P12 until the beginning of the 2015 football season at the earliest. Maybe later.

:bs: statement... CU has will be on P12N 2 weeks in a row. P12N is doing all they can do to bring in the viewership.

i am a directv sub...i miss not having pac 12 net of course ...but i get sunday tix to watch my beloved packers... id rather go to bww's 3-4 times to catch road buff games than 8-10 times to watch the pack... but my point is the "average" college football fan does not need pac 12 network... as the games shown are most times between the bottom feeders.. ps. not a huge basketball fan so while i root for buffs i dont need to watch til march

ATT is an official partner of the Pac-12 though, so once the merger closes you would think that ATT would want Pac12 distribution on DTV because of those corporate ties.

It is an interesting dynamic with AT&T being the acquirer but DirecTV having a much larger subscription base. There are going to be serious politics going down for wrestling long term control of this business (and I am glad to be no where near it).

Well, as I have said before, I know someone in th eloop at DTV. If the decision is up to them, they are not, repeat are not, going to pick up P12 unless they get a steep discount. With the merger, however, that could change, so this is probably a good thing for you DTV'ers who didn't listen to me.

I think ATT is an official mobile service provider and is doing installs in every Pac-12 stadium.

I'm loving the Dish experience. PAC, Big 10, and SEC networks, in addition to about 6 espns, Fox 1 and CBS,. etc. Also mlb, nfl, and nba networks. More college football than I ever had with direc. As far as sunday ticket, redzone gives me the exact correct dosage of teams other than the Broncos. I think about 40 mg.

I've been spending my money at the two Husker bars in Westminster as they have Dish. There's a lot of red to get used to and ironic, but the TV's are big and they welcome our business. A nice convenient experience for the north burbs when not in Boulder or Denver.

Fox and the Hound at Sheridan & 120th. (Sound)

Benders at the Promenade by the ice rink. (No Sound)

Have stopped going to Rock Bottom, Gordon Biersch, Woody's, Old Chicago, etc altogether as a result.

Go Buffs!

I eat a lot and drink a lot. Bad news for the bars that don't carry the PAC.

Is their a sticky reference thread for bars in CO that do carry the PAC. I would much appreciate it.

Can you not receive Dish or Xfinity?

Edit- I posted while you were posting. I thought you might just be going to watch the game.

Old Chicago in Longmont carries P12 net. Strange that other locations don't.

After putting up a big stink, Red Zone in Longmont now also carries P12 Net.
