He now has 4 sacks through his first 6 games.

Getting better every week.

McCartney is on pace to be a star.

Looking forward to seeing what levels he takes it to the rest of this season and in the 3 that follow.

I am pretty sure everyone privately reflects how cool it would be for Coach McCartney's grandson to become a serious star players. Assuming we end up playing on national TV and in bowl games you know they're gonna feature his storyline.

Nice to get "legacy" players like McCartney and Kelly. Too bad Ballage thought he had to go elsewhere.

I thought it was a total favor offer. So glad I was wrong.

Him and Jimmie Gilbert could form a pretty sweet duo assuming Gilbert can spend some serious time in the weight room this offseason.

Coleman is another guy who has flashed some, and he always hustles. Remember the Cal screen play? He was the only one still going after the play 50 yards down field. Gotta love it.

Good to see Derek showing to. He's got room to add a lot more weight on his frame so I can't wait to see what he brings going forward.

Honestly thought exactly the same thing at the time. He was totally undersized and not recruited by anyone that I remember. The greyshirt definitely helped.

I was floored the first time I saw him on TV this year. He did not look like the tight end out of Faith Christian Academy we signed as a grayshirt candidate back in 2012.

I'm a fan of Coleman.

Ya Coleman's looked pretty good. I pretty much counted him out after his torn ACL and Achilles. I wonder how much better he would be without those injuries

Had to hold him back on building core strength, but with a full recovery (a Forman specialty it seems) he, like McCartney, Gilbert, Shaver and even Wilson, have really bright futures as they mature (i.e. get larger, stronger) and gain game experience.

Let's give Forman kudos for bringing these kids up to a D1 level, physically.

This is more confirmation to me this staff can ID "diamonds in the rough". McCartney is a good DE as a frosh, imagine how good he'll be with a season or 2 under his belt.

Well I didn't expect 4 sacks out of him all year much less half of it. Coleman's name has been coming up too. Didn't he get a sack on Saturday?

Isn't his bro a graduate assistant? These two kids turned out to be really good, polite young men. Kudos to mom and grandpa.

You do realize that this staff did not recruit mccartney, right?

I spaced that. Oops. I am easily confused

Yeah. Embree & staff get credit for that recruiting evaluation. MacIntyre honored all the Embree scholarship verbals, so it's hard to tell which he would have independently offered from that group if they hadn't already been committed.

Looking back to the 2013 class, this is the list of guys who were recruited post-Embree:

Michael Adkins
Chidobe Awuzie
Connor Center
Timothy Coleman
Jordan Gehrke
Addison Gillam
Kenneth Olugdobe
Markeis Reed
Ryan Severson
Tedric Thompson

(I think that's correct.)

That's an impressive list.

Three words: Texas, Florida, Michigan.

Tons of 4*s, massive FAIL on the field. It's also what you do with what you got!

Exactly. I'd love to get more highly touted recruits, but for now I am still happy with coaches that can develop our players to reach their max potential.

That's (already) a pretty nice list. With years of playing time left.

Isn't McCartney's dad Shannon Clavelle? He's got bad ass defensive end in his blood (and hopefully a better moral compass).

Coleman is friend of family. He said these kids are ready to win.

You can see it all over twitter from the players. Crawley is ready, Juda is ready, Sefo is ready, Fields Bobo McCulloch Lindsay are ready. Glad to hear they are not getting down on themselves. Getting angry and staying motivated.

I can't say for sure what kind of kid he is, but I've seen him and his brother at church and they at least appear to be top notch young men. I think Mac the Elder is like a father to them.

Since Derek's last name isn't Clavelle, I'm guessing SC had very little impact on the kid's life. Could you imagine having Bill McCartney be your grandfather? No wonder Derek already has 70 college credits and is going to be a doctor!!!
