CU football: Lagging ticket sales take toll on budget

Precisely why the "zero expectations" crowd couldn't be more wrong. We literally can't afford to continue losing

This is what happens when you ignore your big revenue sport for ten years. We all saw this coming. We warned them this would happen. The whole "powder blue" thing was a warning to not let the program slip any further. That was five years ago.

Its unfortunate, because I feel like they finally got the message. It's going to take a few more years to turn this around, though. Ten years of neglect doesn't get fixed in two years.

A lot has gotten fixed in effectively one year don't count RG out, also for the FB only guys on this board this item should be noted:

"maximizing high interest in men's basketball"

Tad and his program are an asset shorting them is dumb right now.

Basketball may be an asset, and it's very good that the men's basketball program is generating some revenue these days, but it will never be the cash cow football is.

I don't disagree with that, but we have a contingent that would rather see basketball return to the stone-age for a incremental uptick in football spending. There was a day and time when BBall was a 4-5mm dollar black hole by spending an extra few bucks on hoops we've cut that number monumentally.

Kansas and Kentucky HIGHLY disagree.

Sacky's got it right. This is Phil and Bruce's chickens coming home to roost.
I'm glad Leadership finally woke up. That doesn't excuse them for sleeping in.

Slider is also right. The patient progress/improvement contingency can get butts in seats.

I'm glad to see the urgency.

But look at all the money they saved by keeping Hawkins an extra year.

The basketball vs football revenue generation discussion is simple math.

Assume that CU has the capability to sell out all football games and all basketball games in a typical season at $50/ticket.

Basketball: 14 homes games * $50/ticket * 11,064 = $7.7MM per year in ticket sales
Football: 7 homes games * $50/ticket * 53,613 = $18.7MM per year in ticket sales

it's reasonable to assume that concession sales, parking revenue and on-site merchandise sales are proportional. TV money disparity has been well discussed on other threads.

I'd be curious at comparisons of the expenses related to hosting 7 football games vs 14 basketball games, not sure where that would land.

Even for schools like Duke who get $60/ ticket for hoops, if they can continue football success and somehow manage to sell out their 34k football stadium at a mere $40/ticket, football revenue would exceed basketball by more than $1.5MM, which is why you see them investing.

You can't fix football by gutting basketball.

That's a false idea that a lot of people seem to have every time they hear that money is being invested in the basketball program (or anywhere other than football at a time when football definitely needs some things).

Football coaches are being paid enough. Football facilities and stadium enhancements are happening. Football recruiting budget, training table and other services are fully funded right with or above our peers.

There's nowhere to spend the money at this point. Things that might need to happen such as more stadium enhancements are big ticket items that are way outside the budget.

It's at a point where MacIntyre has what he needs. The infection & rot seems to have been cut out of the football program as much as it can be without the cure-all that winning provides. There are some staff changes and enhancements that can be made to improve the program. But, honestly, I don't see anything else to do except win. I think the football program's just about where the basketball program was during Bzdelik's last year when he finished just under .500 and a veteran team was coming back the next year (Tad's first season). Football needs to learn how to win. That's the only forward momentum left to achieve in order to get this thing to snowball in a positive way. Attendance, revenue, recruiting and the rest will pretty much take care of themselves if they can start winning games because of all the other stuff being in place.

I agree with Nik that the administration has done just about everything it can at this point. While they did create the mess, they do appear to have acknowledged the mess they made and have taken the appropriate steps to clean it up. What we're getting at the football games now are the die hards, the folks who would (and have) come to the games regardless of record. You can't make a profit off of those people alone. You need the casual fan - the guy who has a lot of options, but chooses to go to watch CU football because it's enjoyable. We haven't had those folks in years.
