Just about three weeks until Spring practices start

Given that spring practices are just as much about building depth and developing young players (maybe moreso) than fall practices more geared toward game planning, who are the young players you are most interested in hearing about this spring? My thoughts:

1. Cade Apsay: When he arrived on campus, it was clear a redshirt year would be needed. Is he now ready to be a viable #2 QB as a redshirt freshman? Given what we saw out of Gehrke last season, it would be hard to say any QB has a stranglehold on the #2 job.

2. Grant Watanabe: Is he going to be ready to practice at any point this spring? Given the long rehab from his foot injury, is he a viable option to make an impact on special teams as a true freshman or is he destined for a redshirt?

3. Donovan Lee: He played a fair amount as a true freshman and only occasionally flashed. Is he ready to be an every-down WR (or close to it)?

4. Jase Franke: I was slightly surprised to see him redshirt, but is he ready to push himself into a competitive DT rotation?

Focusing on the young guys we haven't seen in game action (ignoring JUCOs):

Cade Apsay for me, too. Can he challenge for QB2 this year?

Jay MacIntyre. I keep hearing good things from the folks who watch practices that he's going to be a productive guy from the slot.

Josh Kaiser. Again, word is that he was impressive as hell in fall camp, just young and undersized. Can he play early?

Jaisen Sanchez. DB recruiting was light in the last 2 classes. If he's a miss, the future depth chart is scary.

In addition to Duff, I got the following:

I believe our redshirted TE's are still limited. If they can go, love to see what any of our TE's could do.

Otherwise, seeing someone come out to complement Spruce and Fields at WR. Bobo is out, so there are a ton of reps to go around. Should be interesting to see where little macintyre goes with his reps.

Then, of course, there are the lines. Need to see growth from the redshirted/grey shirted DLs, and to see whether our JUCO's can play.

OL, want to see som guys really grab the open RG and LG spots. Hope to see someone push Irwin at LT.

Oh yea, and I really want to see Apsay turn it on. Need depth at QB badly.

I'd like to see Phillip Lindsay go beast mode this season. Love this kids heart, we need more players like him
I would love to see him make someone miss 20 yards down the field instead of trying to truck them over despite the fact they are completely alone.

But yea, I like the kid too

Grant and the 3? JUCO defensive transfers. We need size and strength on D...this will make or break our season IMO. Also wanna see the punter...O'Neill was an important part of the Buffs' game last year.

Kaiser is a good one. He definitely looked the part last fall. Need to find a RT for 2016.

Here is my list.

1. Really want to see if we have anything with the JUCO's. This could be huge in terms of depth and production for CU to have a chance at a bowl next year. The Dline was a huge hole and made the difference in a lot of games last year. Really look forward to seeing Carrell.

2. Will Samson be back bigger, stronger, and focused? He has the talent and my hope is he has put it together. You can put him just about anywhere on the Dline. Very excited here.

3. Linebackers - I hope we find some play makers here. Not sure we will get much out of spring ball, unless Watanabe is ready to go. Maybe KO will take a step forward? Any Dlineman moving over as been suggested before. Still a huge concern here.

4. Any of the freshman who red shirted. Do we have any play makers in this group. Sounds like there could be a few good ones, but do we have any difference makers?

5. Donovan Lee - Agree with Duff here. He seems to have the play making ability. I still think he looks awkward at the slot position, so hopefully he is growing into that. I'd like to see him in the backfield some this year as well. Got to find ways to get him in space

Either way, I am excited for this spring. They have enough depth to get a really good idea of where they will be at next year.

DL and OL size and strength for sure. Also, need to see if anyone looks the part of a PAC 12 LB, including Addison. Wondering how the secondary is gonna shake out with Chido probably going back to CB.

Do we know the severity of either of the Redshirted TE injuries? I thought both injuries were minor in that they could have played 2nd half of the season but Mac didn't want to burn a RS year for nothing. Very surprised to hear they are both limited this spring.

Feeling optimistic about depth on both lines. Nervous about LB.

DL could be intriguing with returns and Juco additions.... We shall see.

I'm excited to hear about some of my favorite 2014 signees that redshirted. Mathewes and Franke on the DL. Keeney at TE. Apsay at QB. Lee Walker at WR.

I also want to see how some of the young guys look in their first spring. Fields, White, Lee, and Lopez. Hoping for some positive reports on the young OL too, for once we actually have a few options on that front.

I'll be watching every one of MM's recruits. I imagine he's brought in 50~ scholarship players on the roster this Spring. If he is truly a superior talent evaluator/developer then some of those young guys should start to look legit

Math is hard. Check yours.

Is it fair to say, he D-line will be improved, immensely.

Lee Walker redshirted? I thought he played a little this year as a db, am I thinking of someone else?

We don't necessarily have to wait to see how those guys look to evaluate Mac's evaluation skills. SJSU, with a team made up primarily of Mac's recruits, has gone 9-15 the past two seasons. I suppose you could say the new coach is an idiot, but even if that's the case, I'm inclined to believe that if the talent was truly there then they would have at least been able to get to a bowl game, which is hardly that difficult playing in the MWC. Also just one of Mac's SJSU recruits made all-MWC this year (2nd team) and of course not a single one of his CU recruits made all-Pac-12 or even honorable mention this year.

Yes lets use athletes that HCMM is no longer coaching to evaluate his ability to coach and get production from his players...

you must not remember all of the NFL talent MM put through SJSU.

NFL PLAYERS FROM SAN JOSE STATE. MULTIPLE PLAYERS.

1. Middlemiss
2. Issac Miller
3. Matt Mathewes
4. Josh Kaiser
5. Cade Apsay
6. Jasien Sanchez
7. Grant Wantanabe

Two of his SJSU recruits have been drafted (both late round), and one more might be drafted this spring, again late round if so.

I can hardly contain my excitement.

Edit: If Mac saw this post he'd probably bring up Patrick Willis, as he often does to justify his lackluster recruiting.....that's one freaking guy and he recruited him fourteen years ago.
