Woelk: Buffs can dictate terms of CSU series

Appeasement be damned!!!!

Good artice Neill. So glad you're back!

Bravo.

It is business. Woody Paige and his socialist plan to legislate this series can go pound sand.

Spot on. The wild card used to be the legislature but with funding levels at all time lows, I feel like the Buffs are in position to get everything we want.

2 for 1 or Good riddance. This is the same deal they'd get from any other p5 team.

Isn't it interesting how Woody doesn't cover the actual game but gets emotional about the game ending? I honestly think that the only reason this is getting any run is that the Denver media only pays attention to CU or CSU football the one week they play at the Broncos stadium. And then, only in passing.

**** 'em.

What kills me about the segment is that Woody displays a willful ignorance about the limitations that a 9-game Pac12 conference schedule imposes on CU. The odd year where CU only has 4 conference home games makes booking six home games a significant challenge. Somehow CU and RG become the bad guy for wanting to deliver six home games to his season ticket holders. This is against the backdrop of a world where some top revenue generating schools like UT or A&M play seven or eight home games in their on-campus stadiums.

Somehow the $105 million in private funds that is being raised to cover the much needed facilities is completely glossed over. Rick George has to answer to his paid customers in order to succeed. His customers don't like substituting a manufactured rivalry game against a MWC opponent at Sports Authority with an on-campus game.

Woody completely ignores the fact that the state of colorado provides an embarrassingly low level of support that amounts to a single digit percentage of CU's academic revenue, and is among the lowest three states in the nation for subsidizing higher ed. Once again the point is missed that the CU Athletic Department budget is required to operate without any tax payer subsidy. It can be argued that the CUAD subsidizes the academic side of CU through the payment of OOS tuition fees for 100% of its student-athletes.

The CU football schedule should not be placed into the hands of politicians and lawmakers at the capitol. The Colorado voter does not want state government wasting taxpayer money spending time legislating college football schedules. Unlike Oklahoma or Kansas, the Colorado government never demanded that the primary research and land grant universities must share a conference. Forcing a rivalry game at sports authority does not and should not not make up for the existing legislative display of indifference about heterogeneous conference affiliations.

Giving away a bunch of free or steeply discounted tickets to HS bands and underprivileged kids is not the answer to filling Sports Authority on Labor Day weekend. By now the Denver Athletic Commission has had ample opportunity to work with CU, CSU and the City of Denver to make the RMS the spectacle of Woody's dreams. The experiment has failed to create a carnival atmosphere that replicates anything close to "the biggest cocktail party in the world" between UGA and UF, or the OU-UT Red River Rivalry that takes place amidst the Texas State Fair.

The RMS is a half assed affair without much red carpet or white glove appeal.
Instead, the standout experience at Sports Authority begins with the administrators from CU admonishing students in the days before the game with a letter demanding that everyone show respect for the law under an additional threat of on campus disciplinary action for misbehavior in Denver. Then the DPD hovers around the tailgating area looking to write tickets for minors in possession of alcohol. Next fans are greeted by Argus goons who look into your private belongings and wand you under the illusion of security. At one point or another, everyone will witness jerks spewing profanities at one another based upon their team affiliations. The scene is a hot mess, even without bringing up the sore point of how CU has chosen to allocate tickets to its season ticket holders.

Kill the damn game with fire. Whatever fantasy Woody has about the potential for this game to be a community celebration of college football has been squashed by changes in drinking laws, changes in conference alignments, and changes in College football economics. I doubt Woody Paige has ever purchased a CU season ticket in his life, and has been able to attend sporting events as a perk of his profession. His flippant attitude towards the values and preferences of paying customers is insulting.

He is the Denver Sports Media and he is out of step with reality.

If there is a way to get out before the 6 games are over, it is attendance related, correct? Which is why Rick is offering CU fans to take extra home game tickets instead of forcing them to buy the CSU game IMO. He probably knows telling CU fans to stay away would motivate CSU to move more to make sure the attendance clause is covered, but doing this is a nice business move to try to make CU have the lowest numbers possible. I think. I hope. I hate to miss it if it is the first game because of the fact that....it is the first game of the season and I am dying to see the Buffs play. This year it isn't an issue though, which I like. And I can skip the third game.

On the other hand, I think CU is poised to pound CSU into the sand this year and hopefully for the next 5 after this one. Best scenario if we can't get out early is to royally embarrass them for the next six years until they are more than happy to have it go away forever.

I really like RG's solution of offering additional home game tickets in exchange for seats at RMS. With attendance figures flagging at Folsom, he has the inventory to spare.

I always hated giving away my unneeded RMS seats in the nosebleed section and basically consider CSU tickets as something between another donation and extortion. When opting out of the RMS means being able to pick up an extra pair of seats, then count me in! Maybe Oregon and USC games will draw closer to 50K in 2015.

If this helps kill the series in Denver, then all the better.

Totally agree. We need to just start blasting CSU and treat them like the little brother they are. Their fans and the Denver media are believing that are at least our equals if not better b/c they beat us last year and because they have had much better records the past few years, playing in a much worse league.

The difference between P5 teams and the rest should get more pronounced with this cost of attendance thing and the new power the P5 teams are getting. We should dominate non P5 times 9 out of 10 times. If we could start regularly blowing them out, the Denver media will shut up about wanting to extend the series and maybe even the lammies would become more flexible about how to finish out the contract.

And honestly, it's better for both fan bases to make those a win for both teams. I'd rather both teams have a win than only one. My cousin played for CSU so I don't hate them, but this is a dumb game that always hurts a home state team. There isn't a 100 year history of the game being played. The fan base either doesn't care, or just hates the other.

It just needs to go away. I hope that RG makes the point to MM that it won't hurt the chances of it going away if the lambs take a regular beating. No running late in the game if way ahead. No kneeling. Make the lambs beg to get the series ended. Then schedule teams that might be a loss, but are top 25 teams from the SEC, ACC or B1G.

Folks. These are the bumps we're going to have to endure for CU to start doing what is best for CU. They are the bumps that Bohn wouldn't face.

We know the media knows nothing about CU, and Boulder and CU are their favorite punching bag. Almost none of the Denver media takes any time to research anything about CU, from recruiting, to facilities, to finances. They react on pure emotion about what they perceive to be going on.

But RG needs to hold the course to do what is right for the school. If he can get CU winning again, then everyone will come in line. I remember it was only a year ago that Kiz was blasting CSU about dropping down to FCS or dropping football... but not he is extolling their virtues.

So true, some guys at work when are huge sports fans were talking about the new stadium that CSU is getting them asked me if CU is ever going to get new facilities. I was kinda surprised they heard more about CSU plans than CU construction. I think when Cu starts winning and fans start showing up again, they are going to be surprised by the facilities.

Wonder what his employer (CSU) thinks about that one. Good article indeed.
