So, the Buffs, I'm sure VERY hungry for a Pac 12 win after going 1-5 in its last 6 games, host the Cougars tonight at the Keg. (Note- the next game, against Washington, is Sunday at 5:30, shortly after the Men's 2:00 game vs. Stanford, so is a double header opportunity for Buff fans to support their teams.)

Hopefully the Buffs can keep the turnovers, their main issue as the year has gone on (50 turnovers total in their two games last week, ugh), to a minimum. Also, hope they start out quicker than they did last week in their LA swing, during which they didn't score in the 1st 5+ minutes against UCLA, leading to an 11-0 early deficit, and then followed up by digging a 6-15 hole for themselves early in the game against USC. Hopefully as they address those issues, the strengths for the Buffs this conference season will continue- mainly their shooting (.384 from 3 vs. .304 for the opposition; .783 from the free throw line vs. .703 for the opposition), and rebounding (out-rebounding the opposition by ~3 boards per game). (Kudos to the team for the progress in rebounding- early in the year many opponents were DOMINATING the Buffs with offensive boards, but the Buffs largely corrected that by the start of conference play, as they're statistically only down ~1 offensive board per game in conference play.)

cubuffs.com preview of the game- http://www.cubuffs.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=600&ATCLID=209887538 . There's also a feature article by B. G. Brooks discussing the Buffs, highlighted by discussion of and quotes by senior Lexy Kressl, at http://www.cubuffs.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=600&ATCLID=209887537 .

A little bit about WSU from the preview:

"
Washington State is 13-10 overall and tied with Oregon for eighth place in the Pac-12 Conference at 4-8. The Cougars have lost their last four and haven’t won since their 73-68 win over Colorado on Jan. 25. Washington State averages 70.6 points on 38.5 percent shooting and 74.4 percent from the foul line. Defensively, the Cougars allow 65.7 points per game and allow 42.3 percent from the field which ranks 11th in the Pac-12. WSU gives up the most rebounds in the league at 41.3 per game and has the lowest rebounding margin (-3.4) in the conference. The Cougars counter that by creating the most turnovers among league competitors at nearly 21 per game while also leading the Pac-12 in steals at 10.5 per contest.

Washington State is led by the prolific backcourt of junior Lia Galdeira and senior Tia Presley who account for 53 percent of the team’s scoring. Galdeira ranks second in the Pac-12 in scoring at 20.1 points per game. She leads the conference in steals (3.5 spg) and is the Cougars’ second-best rebounder at nearly six per game. Presley averages 17.2 points per contest leading Washington State with 40 3-pointers. Freshman Louise Brown stepped into a starting role for injured center Shalie Dheensaw and has responded by averaging 3.9 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. Dawnyelle Awa paces the Cougars in assists (2.6 apg) and field goal percentage (.506)

Buffs doing great in this one so far- doubling up the Cougars at half time with a 41-20 lead. Keep it up Buffs!

Buffs get the win 72-51- Way to go!

Got a little nervous for awhile, as the Buffs started cold in the 2nd half, and the big halftime lead shrunk to 11 points with around 11 minutes left in the game. But the Buffs, especially Jen Reese, started shooting better after that point, and they pulled away again with 8 or so minutes to go for the comfortable win. Keep it up- beat the Dawgs on Sunday.

Edit- wanted to mention that, in a way, good to see the Buffs were able to score pretty well, even with neither of their main scorers shooting that well tonight (L. Kressl only 4-16 and J. Swan 2-11). Reese (6-9), Smith (4-5) and Hartmann (4-6) helped pick up the slack.

Didn't make it to the game in person as I planned, but was very pleasantly surprised when we tuned in and the Buffs were up by 17 late in the first half.

After watching the Buffs blow it in Pullman I felt this game was very winnable, but I didn't expect CU to go up big early on. And as pointed out by Aztec the Buffs were able to win without getting the normal contributions from Kresl and Swan on the offensive end. Great job by CU on WSU's duo of Galdiera and Pressley who combined 10-35 from the floor for 25 points. They both have explosive potential.

Of course the turnovers almost got CU in trouble again, but just when it seemed it would fall apart they got it together.

Washington is better than WSU, but CU hung with them in Seattle.

Good win tonight. The Buffs defense kept the Cougs from closing the gap completely early in the second half and then the Buffs offense woke up again. And looking ahead to the game on Sunday against UDub ... the Huskies lost tonight to the Utes for only the Utes second win in conference. Hopefully the Buffs come away with a win over the Huskies also. That game will be the second half of a double header, following the men's game with Stanford. I hope some fans stick around to support the ladies.

Can't believe the Huskies lost to Utah. Perhaps they didn't take the game seriously? Still another winnable game for CU, although they have more variety in their offensive repertoire - which ultimately led to the Buffs' loss an Seattle.

Finally kept it together (enough) for a big win. I missed this one too, but so good to see. It's a strange season for sure, but they've played tight with Stanford and asu. A win Sunday would be huge to get some momentum ahead of osu (who, btw, beat asu at home in front of an awesome crowd tonight)

Lappe shuffled the starting line-up. I'm sure it was to get a message across to some players and it worked. Alina Hartman's interview on the radio after the game was so cute. Jamee Swan was taking pictures to send to mom in Germany and Alina was having a hard time concentrating on the questions. Don't know what Jamee was doing to distract her.

It should be noted the Buffs didn't miss a free throw in this game.
