CU football: Leavitt demanding more from defense

"That's my biggest thing right now is trying to teach them what it is to really work and play hard," Leavitt said. "They don't really understand what it is to play hard yet..."
WTH was Baer doing? I can see why he was fired. It's always interesting to read quotes after a coach leaves; people are more candid.

Third-year sophomore defensive end Derek McCartney said the influx of talent has increased competition dramatically. He said he feels like it's good for everyone involved that no one can feel safe with their position on the depth chart the way some players have been able to in the past.
Good to hear...talent and competition could do wonders for the DL.

"I think we can make a big jump like we did on offense," MacIntyre said. "I think we'll be able to do that."
From your lips to God's ears.

I'm definitely a Missouri mule with the D...but things seem to appear to be possibly maybe heading in the right direction...perhaps.

It's hard to hype much when they aren't sure of how the front seven allignment is going to look and the same discussion of "working harder" exists that we heard over the last two takeovers. This koolaid is still pretty bitter.

It's not too tough to hype a guy who had nasty defenses at Kansas State and took a program from FCS to top 10 and coached some filthy players in San Francisco.

Let's just say I'm more optimistic than I would be if Baer was giving similar interviews.

I am getting hyped because I think we have two HC's on staff that know what they want and the best way to get it. As long as they can work together, this hire may be just what we needed. Even though Leavitt is the DC, his demands for work ethic, and attention to detail will affect everyone. Love that he gets in the trenches with the guys and works with them. Players seem to do well with that kind of coach.

Also DC at KSU w/ nasty defenses
HC at USF w/ nasty defenses
LB Coach at SF w/ nasty defenses

I think we're going to see a lot of different defensive fronts and we're never going to officially hear JL or MM say "we run a 3-4 Under" or "we run a 3-3-5 Stack", etc. I believe it's going to depend on the team we play that week and what kind of offense that team runs. My guess would be facing teams like USC, Oregon State, and Stanford, we'll be playing more 4-5 man fronts, putting an emphasis on size and power at the point of attack, while ASU, Oregon and UCLA will be more 3 man fronts with more speed on the field. Just my 2 cents

Good post. Personally I'm not getting "hyped", but I'm as close to hope as I have been in a long time with this program. So much is leading up to the importance of the 2015 season. Most fans were willing to extend a lot of grace to Mac in his first 2 years, especially those fans who realize the complete **** sandwich he inherited. However, with a dismal 0-9 in conference play, horrible D, failure to win close games and bad TO margin, the pressure is on Mac and JL to turn this thing around in 2015. To me that looks like 4-6 wins and it would be nice for Mac to get his "signature win". To get this thing turned around more quickly, 7 wins (including a signature win) would really help recruiting and probably earn Mac PAC12 Coach of the Year. All this depends on Mac's and JL's job in turning around this D.
