New CU Recruiting Grounds: Kansas City and Florida

Interesting. I expected us to use some of Leavitt's contacts in Florida (there are always some guys who want to go out of state, and a couple Florida guys have been "decent" for us in the past). Hell, I believe we already have at least one known offer to a FL OL.

But Kansas City is new to me, although it makes sense given Leavitt broke into the big time at Kansas State. Should be interesting to see how this shakes out for us. Doesn't sound like these will be Leavitt's sole areas either.

Boulder should have appeal to kids from the KC metro. Would also help if this meant that CU was going to start scouting the Kansas jucos in addition to the California ones.

Florida simply has so much talent that there are always players to be found that can help the program.

I like this. Normally I'd worry that expanding the geography spreads the staff too thin, but I don't expect a DC to be bringing in a high number of prospects each year so this is fine. Leavitt can use his network, identify some targets, and we'll hopefully get some traction.

I have hopes for the JCs in both KS & FL. MMs connections to the JC ranks in TN, NC, etc look like they paying some dividends without a ton of time commitment on his part - if Leavitt could do the same thing, that would be huge.

I'd far rather Leavitt recruit the areas he's familiar with as opposed to forcing him to try to establish connections in places where he has never recruited before. I'm fine with this.

Laguda went to Butler County Community College in El Dorado, KS. Although he is originally from Georgia. Butler is a national powerhouse juco, good to have some connections there.

Colorado is the promise land for Midwest (especially Missouri) families. I've written about that before, and am really happy we're taking a stab at it.

Good point on Laguda. I'm sure that developed a relationship with that coaching staff. Should be nurtured.

If these are the areas that Leavitt has connections (which obviously he does) and thinks we can actually land some players, then it would be crazy not too. As mentioned by Sacky, no reason to force Leavitt to recruit an area he has never done before. Will be interesting to follow. Could back fire big time though

Not familiar with the midwest really, but Kansas City and St Louis County don't seem to be the greatest use of resources. I guess he'd know, but ehh.

Florida good though.

It just depends on the ROI, how much time he spends there and what we get out of it. I remember Bieniemy spending weeks in the New Orleans area, which everybody was excited about, he threw out a bunch of offers and we got nothing.

I'm assuming he's still given some time in Cali and CO anyways.

Bread and butter will be CA, CO, HI, and AZ. Hopefully TX finally joins the mix. Beyond those five, meh.

I agree pretty much. Just kinda wondering if we made good gains in the recruiting department. Baer was pretty whatever, but he did seem to be liked in Utah. LaRussa seemed to do pretty good work in the IE and in poly recruiting. Now we have Adams doing the poly thing (maybe that includes Utah?) and someone is clearly still recruiting the IE. Just hope we aren't spread too thin.

Has Tumpkin said anything about his recruiting areas? Guessing he has contacts in the midwest too..

Kansas City seems like such a strange outlier that it makes me wonder if they have some sort of specific target in that area or if they just have made a decision that it is ripe for both talent and signability? Just seems like a weird place to focus efforts on.

KC and St Louis (Midwest) make since to me. Hard to get a signature from a kid in Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia, Arkansas, Mississippi, etc... all those kids think they are SEC material from the second they put on a helmet. Midwest would be easier to sway a kid - COLORADO and playing in Cali - beats the hell out of Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, etc...

How bout this state, MacIntyre/Leavitt?

I would agree if it weren't for Mizzou being in the SEC now (and doing fairly well) and bringing that same mindset to the kids around the area.

Coach probably has a special contact or two that are his eyes on the ground there is all. Every recruiter has their special moles on the ground looking for the overlooked talent. Just because Mizzou recruits KC doesn't mean they find them all or have room for them. But it's not like I'd expect more than 1-2 every few years from KC.

Florida is different. If you got some of the upper tier guys each year that leave the SEC to play somewhere else far from Florida, you'd be doing pretty good.

I love that we think that Colorado has a ton of Pac 12 talent. I'm sure they are hitting hard all those who are P12 caliber. But why bring in guys who aren't just to say, "Hey, they are Colorado kids!"

That's the great state of Colorado? Where's Boulder?

What do you mean? I don't think anyone is under the illusion that Colorado boasts a ton of Pac 12 talent. Colorado doesn't boast a ton a D1 talent, let a lone Pac 12 talent.

Colorado doesn't have a ton of talent but it would be nice to land the better talent that's here. Usually some solid oline prospects yearly, occasionally other positions as well.

It was to the person whom I was responding too, who was implying we needed to focus MORE in CO where I don't think that is where the emphasis should be. Hit the guys with the D1 level talent (preferably P12) hard and move on to more fertile recruiting areas.

Who was that person implying that? The guy you quoted said "this state" and linked to a Texas map....

Totally my bad. The link was dead and didn't show up on my screen so it looked like he was implying that this state as in CO needed to be recruited heavier.

We need pac-12 athletes. Doesnt matter if they are from Colorado, Hawaii, Florida, Cali, or Texas.

I believe JL will be a top recruiter. It seems to me that having him focus on KC and Florida is a waste of recruiting talent. I just do not get it. I think we'd get a lot more bang for the buck if he focused on our stronger recruiting areas. That said, and Nik, Duff, et al can correct me if I'm wrong, but I'd imagine as DC, he'd still be a closer for, especially, any defensive recruit.

Leavitt shouldn't be expected to be a road warrior / recruiting ace at this stage of his career. He's a coordinator. So he's got a couple areas that CU doesn't traditionally recruit that he'll try to snag us a few players. Other than that, the assistants and the non-coach staff members better be doing the legwork and bringing him in where appropriate.

Amusing how Sacramento was considered some undiscovered promise land, yet KC is a waste of resources.

Flyover state bias IYAM.
