XII wants a CCG w/out divisions.
ACC wants three divisions.

looks like both are getting what they want by 2016.

I would've loved the speculated divisions if I still lived in Raleigh, but don't believe SB Nation's is anything more than spit balling.

3 divisions is interesting. You'd need either a 12- or 15-team conference.

With 12 teams:

3 games against your division and each of the other 2 divisions

You'd lose games against 2 teams twice per each 8 year cycle

With 15 teams:

4 games against your division

5 games against the other 10 teams

You'd lose games against 5 teams twice per each 4 year cycle

Conference championship should really be 2 rounds in those scenarios: 3 division champs + 1 wildcard based on highest rank in playoff poll

In the Pac-12, that would shake out as:

UA, ASU, UU, CU
USC, UCLA, Cal, Furd
UO, OSU, UW, WSU

I'm not sure I like it, but I'm not sure I hate it either.

so close, the ACC is at 14[SUP]5/8[/SUP] currently. lots of wishful speculation that ND is ready to take the plunge (FTR, I don't buy it).

Pretty balanced.... and CU's division would be the weakest!

Thinking out loud . . . Does this become a slippery slope for Pac12 to quickly add two OK and two TX schools?

The addition of a wildcard and playoff seems kind of stupid to me overall, but more fun games is good.

From the ACC's vantage point, this is all about giving them flexibility to accommodate Notre Dame. They could have a 15 team conference with three 5 team divisions, and an 8 game schedule. That would make everyone's conference schedule 4-2-2, and ND would still have 4 non-conference games to work with their traditional match-ups*.

*I looked at their schedule the last few years, and they've already been forced into taking some years off of some of those "traditional" games:
-ND is not playing UM this year
-It looks like they've quit playing Army
-BC has been pretty on and off recently
-As has Air Force
The only games that they're keeping very consistently are USC, 'furd and Navy. From a "variety of opponent" standpoint, an 4-2-2 conference schedule plus 2 or 3 of UM, BC, AFA, Navy, USC & 'furd, plus 1 or 2 others might work for them. And who the hell knows, maybe the ACC goes to 16 teams, with 3 static divisions of 5 teams, a 4-2-2 schedule, and ND hops divisions every two years. That would keep a lot of variation in ND's schedule even if they always scheduled the same 3 or 4 OOC opponents.

it's wayyyyy past that.... Notre Dame totally gave UM the finger, declined to renew the contract and went signed a deal with tOSU.

BC is now part of ND's 5 team ACC rotation so no reason to sign any other contract between the schools.

also, Swofford (ACC commish) now tweeting there have been no serious discussions about 3 divisions and that he sees it as very unlikely.

Edit: I think 16 teams is most likely -- can't figure out if it'll be UConn, Cincy or other. Texas rumors never die, WVU would be a great fit in every way except academics (but the ACC already sold out for Louisville) and Navy keeps coming up (WVU and Navy theoretically help restore the loss of the WMA market from Maryland's depature). my guess is that the conference is still having back channel discussions with Texas and waiting to see how that sorts out (some believe that Texas joining the ACC will be enough to bring ND in as a full member).

XII leaning to no CCG right now.

sounds like their round robin format will persist.

saw posted elsewhere some reporter tweets from XII meetings taking place now that reaffirm this.

all the early projections I've seen has TCU back in the mix, most in the NCAACG -- not sure how much that impacts matters.

They are playing with fire here, IMO. With today's college football, its extremely difficult to go undefeated and that's just about what a Big 12 team will have to do. I see why they don't think they need a CCG, however, for you to get a guaranteed spot you had better have this game (or at least give your conference a good chance at it). I will laugh my head off if this same scenario happens again in 2015.

Not necessarily. This year was odd in that the favorite won all 4 of the other championship games, and with the exception of undefeated Florida St, the winners all looked brilliant in their CCGs. I think the Big12 is banking on an upset in one of the 4 games.

Yeah, this last year was the exception to the rule. Usually, somebody stubs their toe along the way.

Last year's Big XII's cause could have been helped by two things:
1. Big boy OOC schedules
2. The commissioner having the balls to actually declare a conference champion

#1 can be fixed by teams, but takes time. It's possible that they're moving in this direction already (I actually have no idea how the XII's OOC is looking in the future).
#2 can be fixed by UT returning the commissioner's balls to him for a few days at the end of the season.

#2 is now fixed. No matter what the conf will crown a sole champion. Bailer however, still plays SMU, Rice, and Lamar....
