Klatt actually has some very positive comments about the Buffs & the upgrades to Folsom. The short blip on Buffs TV showing the raising of the final I beam with all the names on it was cool but not long enough.

Hey giant. It's past noon. Rise and shine sleepy head!

Sleeping Giant!

The only thing CU is missing may be the biggest piece of the puzzle. The buffaloes simply do not have the devoted, cult like fan base as most of the other big programs. Football is not religion in Boulder like it is in Alabama, Texas, Florida, Nebraska, Oklahoma, etc. Fan engagement and retention is the next hurdle that RG needs to clear IMO.

Klatt's the man. Great to see him excelling in the national media as quickly as he has. Just wish he'd do some name dropping for the Buffs more often on air!

I think you would/will be surprised at all the CU fans/alums that come out of hiding when the team starts winning again. Obviously doesn't compare to what the teams you mentioned have, but there are A LOT of CU fans/alums all over the country, but they simply haven't cared over the past decade.

CU has never had that kind of fan base though. Even in our glory years we didn't regularly sell out Folsom. This is and always will be Bronco country. CU will always play (at least) second fiddle in its home market because of that.

The first year in the Pac-12 the stadium was almost full the entire season. There is passion for sure.

Closest approximation is Wisconsin, where the Badgers live in the shadow of Green Bay. Based on the experience of cheeseheadland, it is possible for a flagship university's football team to coexist and thrive in an NFL dominated media market.

The approach of blaming CU's fan base for CU's problems is an excuse, pure and simple. CU's fans have gone where CU has led them. There is a leadership vacuum. As long as the CUAD defers to the fans to define who we need to be, we'll continue to suck. When Bill McCartney defined what CU Football is, the fans fell in line.

That's not the issue with the fan base, though. Those other teams that you mentioned have a rabid fan base, yes. But more than that, their fan base donates infinitely more than CU's does. When CU starts winning, they will sell out their 58,000 seat stadium, and I would suspect a solid uptick in donations.

Do AZ, ASU, Utah, Cal and Stanford all really have rabid fan bases?

I would definitely say Utah does. The MUSS is legit.

I think it's a big of a chicken an egg scenario. A rabid fanbase wouldn't have allowed some of the leadership that we've had over the years to endure very long, but one of the reasons we don't have that rabid fanbase in the first place is we've never had a long sustained period of good leadership.

For whatever reason, the leadership quality seems to ebb and flow, and with it goes the football program. And worst of all, CU chose to have some of its biggest incompetency just as college football was jumping into the modern big money era.

You're right, Utah was a bad example, but the others I listed have successful programs with mediocre fan/alumni support. I would include Oregon in that group, but Phil Knight and Nike make them a complete outlier.

I also think Skidmark's post is spot on. If you build it, they will come.

That is why I said it was an obstacle that RG had to clear. The AD has a responsibility to engage and retain fans/donors. They haven't done that in a long time.

They are certainly trying. Between the facilities, new uniforms, high profile scheduling, emergence into social media, the CU Video team, etc. are all attempts at creating buzz and excitement (among other things) with fans and recruits. Unfortunately, the only thing that is going to truly reengage the entire fan base is winning. Hopefully that follows.

I'm very torn on this video. It's great to see JK giving some very visible support for the program again. It was brutal listening to him blather on about how unjust the Embree firing was. I think he did more damage than he realizes and his words have more impact than he thinks. Something about that video just doesn't sit right with me, and that's the impression I'm getting that they seem to think these new facilities are some kind of panacea that will solve all of our ills. I am thrilled with the new facilities, don't get me wrong. I'm increasingly concerned that this is seen as a solution to the facilities issue. It's not. It's not even close. There is so much more work that needs to be done. This is about half of what they need to do just to catch up. Then they need to keep going just to stay in the race.

Yeah but atleast they have the facilities that the players need to be successful with their practice/training/studying habbits. The next step is mostly for the fan experience which is important but not as essential.

Marketing the facilities is GOOD and we should expect that from CU.

I'm happy Klatt is back saying nice things, but I also hold a bit of a grudge for his drivel from the Embo firing.

Buffs are well represented in the CFB national sports media...Klatt, Fowler and Cutter are all pretty big names...Fowler probably the biggest name in all CFB media.

I'm constantly amazed that people forget about Solomon Wilcots. Dude is solid.

Klatt said what many people on here have said about the administration. Grow up, he didn't try to erode the CU brand he called a spade a spade. He probably cares more about the program than any one on this site so he was probably twice as angry at what it had become.

Yeah, I'm over it. In hindsight I can see why he was so pissed at Bohn.
