Buffs competing this summer- Olympic sports

Thought I'd try just creating a catch-all thread where others and I can post anything of interest we see about future, current or past Buffs competing in any of the Olympic sports (assume if nothing else there will be a LOT of track) over summer 2015.

1st up from me- 5 incoming Buffs are competing at the prestigious Brooks PR Invitational in Seattle tomorrow. (Looks like the meet goes from 1:30 to approx. 4:00 Pacific time.)

All 5 of the below will be heading to Boulder in a month or two to start their freshmen years, and are competing in the following (start times I assume are approximate and converted to Mountain Time)-

Girl's 2 mile- Danielle Jones (2:30 MT start)
Boy's 2 mile- John Dressel, Joe Klecker (2:45 MT start)
Boy's 110 meter hurdles- Alex Billing (3:30 MT start)
Girl's mile- Tabor Scholl (4:25 MT start)

I don't believe there is any live free video stream, but it looks like flotrack is streaming it for those with a subscription. Looks like general information and schedule is available, and live results should be available come meet time, at http://brookspr.flotrack.com/?hzauto=1 .

Good luck to the young Buffs!

Results from the Brooks PR Meet for the future Buffs. (Full results by race available at http://www.milesplit.com/meets/198424-brooks-pr-invitational#.VYc91PlVikr )-

Girl's 2 mile- Danielle Jones. Shows as a Did Not Finish (DNF) in the results. Hopefully she's OK.
(I watched a replay of the race (available at http://www.milesplit.com/videos/95063 ), and she was one of only 5 young women left in the lead group with ~2 laps/ 800M to go, but I don't see her after that, and the announcers don't mention anything as to what might have happened to her.)

Boy's 2 mile- John Dressel, Joe Klecker. Mr. Dressel ended up 3rd (~7-8 seconds behind the winner) and Mr. Klecker 11th. (Video replay available at http://www.milesplit.com/videos/95062 . 2 minute 22 second Interview with Mr. Dressel available at http://www.milesplit.com/meets/198424/videos/?id=95097#.VYc8GflViko .)

Boy's 110 meter hurdles- Alex Billing. Mr. Billing earned 5th. (Video replay at http://www.milesplit.com/videos/95067 .)

Girl's mile- Tabor Scholl. Ms. Scholl ended up 11th. (Video replay at http://www.milesplit.com/meets/198424/videos/1 mile?id=95074#.VYc7rPlViko .)

Just wanted to mention a few current and past Buff track and field stars have big meets over the next week or so.

_________

On the professional scene, Buff alums and current New Balance sponsored athletes Jenny Simpson and Emma Coburn will both be in action in their specialties (1,500 meter run and 3, 000 meter steeplechase, respectively) this Thursday (July 9[SUP]th[/SUP]) at the Lausanne Switzerland Diamond League Meet, and then at the Monaco Diamond League Meet on the 17[SUP]th[/SUP]. I don’t believe Ms. Simpson has lost yet this year, while this will be Ms. Coburn’s 1[SUP]st[/SUP] international level steeplechase of the year.

It may be early in the year, but both are running great so far this year, so wanted to note the current American records for their events are 3:57.12 for the women's 1,500M (old 1983 record still held by former Buff Mary Decker Slaney) and 9:12:50 for the women's steeplechase (Held by Ms. Simpson), just in case one or both former Buffs are able to challenge those records over the next week or so.
(Ms. Simpson JUST missed setting the 1500M American record last year by 0.1 seconds, while Ms. Coburn DOES already have the best American steeplechase time ever. However, she didn't know when she set the mark she had to take an extra drug test after her race to ratify her time, so her time isn't considered an official American record.)

Schedule of times for the various individual races are at http://lausanne.dhttp://lausanne.diamondleague.com/startlistsresults2015/iamondleague.com/startlistsresults2015/ for Lausanne (in French) and http://monaco.diamondleague.com/en/lists-results/programme-2015/ for Monaco.

For Lausanne, looks like the main (televised) part of the meet is from noon-2:00 Mountain time (again, as noted earlier, this Thursday):

Live TV- Live TV coverage on the beIN network. Description of various other viewing options here- http://www.letsrun.com/news/2015/07...g-information-for-2015-athletissima-lausanne/ . (The schedule has the women’s steeplechase with Ms. Coburn running starting at ~12:10 PM MT and the women’s 1500 meters with Ms. Simpson participating at 1:26 PM MT.)

Live Results- I think the http://lausanne.diamondleague.com/startlistsresults2015/ also noted above should show live results once the meet starts.

For Monaco , I’ll try to provide links closer to the day of the meet if I remember.

Buff sophomore sprinter Ana Holland and just graduated distance runner Sara Sutherland have earned the honor to represent the U.S. in the World University Games (WUG) currently being held in South Korea, with the track and field portion of the Games being held from the 8[SUP]th[/SUP] through 12[SUP]th[/SUP]. (The WUG includes many sports, and overall started July 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] and goes through the 14[SUP]th[/SUP].) List of all the U.S. track and field athletes at the games are at http://www.wugusa.com/team-usa-track-set-for-trip-to-south-korea-for-world-university-games/ .

Schedule of events is available at http://www.gwangju2015.com/info/ . (the schedule for track and field is listed as “athletics”. Printable General schedule also available at http://www.gwangju2015.com/IRS/resGJ2015/pdf/GJ2015/AT/GJ2015_AT_C08_AT0000000.pdf .):

Ms. Holland is scheduled to race in the 200M, as well as being in the entry list as possibly being parts of the U.S. 4X100M relay and/ or 4X400M relay teams. (6 U.S. women are listed as potential runners for each relay, with of course only 4 participating in any individual race.)

The 1[SUP]st[/SUP] round of the women’s 200M is scheduled to start at 10:30 AM Korean Time (KT) Thursday, which works out to 7:30 PM Wednesday (tomorrow) night in mountain time (MT). The 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] round of the 200M is 5:00 PM KT Friday, or 2:00 AM MT, with the finals soon after, scheduled to start 6:10 PM KT, or 3:10 AM MT. (I couldn’t find information on which of the 7 1[SUP]st[/SUP] round heats that Ms. Holland is running in.)
The 1[SUP]st[/SUP] Round of the women’s 4X100 relay is scheduled for 7:00 PM KT on Saturday, or 4:00 AM MT, and the finals are Sunday at 6:40 PM KT Sunday, or 3:40 AM MT.
The 1[SUP]st[/SUP] Round of the women’s 4X400 relay is scheduled for 8:05 PM KT on Saturday, or 5:05 AM MT, and the finals are Sunday at 7:15 PM KT Sunday, or 4:15 AM MT.

Ms. Sutherland, although mainly a 1,500M runner with the Buffs, looks to be entered to race the 5,000M at the WUG. The 1[SUP]st[/SUP] round of the 5,000M is scheduled for 8:20 PM KT on Thursday, 7/9, which looks to work out to 5:20 AM mountain time (MT). The 5,000M finals are scheduled for 6:30 PM KT this Saturday, or 3:30 AM MT. (No information I could find right now as to which of the 2 1[SUP]st[/SUP] round heats Ms. Sutherland is in.)

Video Coverage
- For any insomniacs, looks like a lot of the track and field is being shown via ESPN3 streaming coverage starting early each morning except for Sunday’s final day, where there doesn’t appear to be any live coverage. (I assume that day’s events may be included in the track and field “highlight” show scheduled to be on ESPNU Wednesday, 7/15 at 5:00 PM MT. Looks like ESPNU is also televising parts of the WUG live, but is concentrating on basketball.) See http://www.wugusa.com/espnu-espn3-to-cover-world-university-games-from-south-korea-2/ for more detail of ESPN's coverage in the U.S.. (Note- times in that list are U.S. Eastern Time.)

Live Results should be available via http://www.gwangju2015.com/info/ for the day and event once (of course) they are completed.

Congrats to Ana Holland, who has successfully advanced to the 2nd round/ semifinals of the 200M, finishing 3rd in Round 1, Heat 5 with a time of 24.41 seconds. (Her top time as a Buff was 23.54 (a school record), but that was at altitude (in Greeley), which I believe is considered an advantage for sprinters.)

Article on the 1st day performances by the 2 Buffs- http://www.cubuffs.com//ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=600&ATCLID=210188821

"
GWANGJU, South Korea - University of Colorado track and field athletes Ana Holland and Sara Sutherland each moved on to the next round of their respective events on Thursday at the World University Games.

Holland, who is competing in the 200-meter dash as well as relays, clocked a time of 24.41 seconds in her 200 preliminary heat to advance to the semifinals on Friday. Holland, whose season best is 23.54, placed third the fifth heat, which tied for the 17th fastest time of the day. Viktoriaya Zyabkina (Kazakhstan) won Holland’s section in 23.83, while Canada's Farah Jacques finished in 24.30. The top three in each heat automatically moved on to the semis, as well as the next six fastest times.
...

Sutherland, who dominated the 1,500-meter run this season, ran her first 5,000 of the season on Thursday night, clocking in 16:34.49, which was third fastest time in the second heat, 10th overall. New Zealand's Camille Buscomb won the section in 16:33.77 and Japan's Rina Koeda squeaked in just in front of Sutherland for second at 16:34.25. The top five times in each of the two sections earned a spot in the finals, as well as the next five fastest time.
"

Congrats to Ms. Sutherland on also qualifying for the next round, in her case the finals!

Well, both Buffs finish with respectable but not exciting 3rd place finishes. Ms. Coburn ran ~5 seconds slower than she ran in the U.S. Championships a couple weeks ago, which were in far worse conditions (~90 degrees vs. ~68 tonight, although there was some wind), and Ms. Simpson was ~4 seconds off her season best. Pace making in both the steeplechase and 1500M was VERY questionable, and it will be interesting to see how both former Buffs do next week in Monaco when they've had more time to get over any effects of jet lag.
(It says something about how much they've both developed that 3rd place finishes are considered less than awesome. I believe no American had EVER finished in the top 3 in a Diamond League steeplechase Race until Ms. Coburn did early last season, and it wasn't that common (with a few exceptions) for Americans to do much in the 1,500M either.)

Looks like Ms. Holland did not quite advance to the finals in the 200 meter sprint- http://www.cubuffs.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=600&ATCLID=210190218

GWANGJU, South Korea - University of Colorado sophomore Ana Holland placed 16th overall in the semifinals of the 200-meter dash on Friday at the World University Games.

Holland ran 24.29, .12 seconds faster than in the first round, which put her fourth in the third heat. The top two in each of the three heats automatically advanced to the finals, as well as the next two fastest times.

She still has one-two relays (4X100M, 4X400M) she may be running in tomorrow.

[tweet]619897308285571072[/tweet]

Congrats to Ms. Sutherland! It was a slow race for a long time (I've seldom seen a longer distance race like this where, with a couple laps to go, I believe only one runner had been dropped from the lead pack), with the racing not really starting until the last lap to lap and a half. Ms. Sutherland fell back with the initial surge, but then came on strong to pass a couple other young women to move up from 7th or 8th with ~100-150 meters to go and grab 5th by the finish line.

In addition, I believe Ana Holland ran the 1st leg of the U.S.'s 4X100M relay team that advanced to tomorrow's finals with the best time of any team in the 1st round. In the 4X400M relay, enough teams dropped out so that today's 1st round was scrapped, and the 8 teams still entered (including the U.S.) will be toeing the line in tomorrow's finals.

As mentioned in the OP, today is the Monaco Diamond League Meet, which once again includes former Buffs Jenny Simpson and Emma Coburn racing in, respectively, the 1500 meters and steeplechase. For those interested, television coverage is from noon to 2:00 today mountain time on beIN sports. See http://www.letsrun.com/news/2015/07/television-and-streaming-information-for-2015-herculis-monaco/ for other viewing options.)

Per the schedule and live results page ( http://monaco.diamondleague.com/en/...chedule#ScheduleFrame#Monaco2015_CURRENT_json ), looks like Ms. Simpson's race is scheduled to start at 1:25 PM MT, while Ms. Coburn's is the last race of the meet, and is scheduled for a 1:45 start.

GREAT 1500M run for the women. Genzebe Dibaba from Ethiopia runs 3:50.07 and breaks an OLD (1993) world record held by a Chinese runner (consider a suspicious record due to many Chinese runners of that era holding records, and many were subsequently being busted for performance enhancing drugs).

Jenny Simpson had a season's best time that was very close to her personal best, good for 4th place, but the kudos for the day on the American side has to go to Duke grad Shannon Rowbury, who got a rare win over Ms. Simpson by passing her on the final straightaway in an American Record time of 3:56.29.

Congrats to all for great performances.

Looked like, and the announcers indicated, that Emma Coburn was fighting some illness, and it showed in the race, as she was quickly behind the lead pack (which she often leads), and ended up back in 10th place. Hopefully she'll get healthy quickly. Thankfully the main event for track and field this year (World Championships) are still over a month away, so she should be fine by the time that meet starts.

Post-race video interviews now available with Ms's. Simpson and Coburn:

http://www.flotrack.org/coverage/25...red-commitment-to-race-in-Monaco#.ValzKPlVikq (Good to hear that it sounds like Ms. Coburn's illness is "just" a cold, so (although I'm sure it's crippling in an aerobic sport to have a compromised aerobic system) she should hopefully be fully recovered pretty quick.)

Also, in case I forget to mention later, the next major track and field event I can find with a Buff connection is that, next Friday (7/24) at 6:40, (Assume ET, so 4:40 PM MT), Buff alum Shalaya Kipp will be one of two runners representing the U.S. in the steeplechase at the Pan Am Games in Toronto. (From Schedule at http://results.toronto2015.org/IRS/en/athletics/schedule-and-results.htm .) ESPN is covering the Pan Am games, so hopefully that race will be available to watch either on one of the ESPN channels, or at minimum ESPN3 .)

Looks like many past and current Buffs involved in the Colorado Open Men's Golf Tournament being held at at Green Valley Ranch Golf Club. Looks like a 4 day tournament, ending tomorrow.

Leaderboard (Nearest Buff only 4 strokes behind the leader (who was at -11) as of yesterday)- http://cogf.bluegolf.com/bluegolf/cogf15/event/cogf159/contest/16/leaderboard.htm

Shalaya Kipp 2nd at NACAC's/ Esther Lee at U.S. Women's Amateur Golf Championships

A little more news about a couple more Buff athletes:

1) Buff Alum Shalaya Kipp got to represent the U.S. for the 2nd time in a couple weeks, and finished 2nd today in the steeplechase at the North American, Central American and Caribbean Championships (NACAC) that were held in San Jose, Costa Rica. (Results from http://www.tiempodellegada.com/Results/2015/NACAC/ .) As with the recent Pan Am Games, she finished behind only fellow American Ashley Higginson. Congrats to Ms. Kipp!

_____________________________________________________

2) Buff Junior Esther Lee will be participating in the United States Golf Association Women’s Amateur Championship being held at the Portland Golf Club in Portland, Oregon starting tomorrow morning.

Article on her participation is at http://www.cubuffs.com//ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=600&ATCLID=210258787 . Per the article, "The week-long tournament gets underway Monday, Aug. 10 and concludes Sunday, Aug. 16. Lee's first round tee time is set for 10:20 a.m. MDT from the 10th hole." From the article, looks like the 1st 2 days of the tournament are stroke play, and then the top 64 finishers from those days (out of 156 players starting the tournament) begin match play starting Wednesday.

Video coverage- As noted in the cubuffs.com article, "The U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship will be televised once match-play begins on Wednesday, Aug. 12 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. MDT on Fox Sports 1. Bonus coverage will also be live streamed on usga.org the final four days (Aug. 13-16) from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. MDT."

Live Scoring- I can't see any definitive link yet, but I'd think a "Live Scoring" link may become available on the tournament's homepage ( http://www.usga.org/content/usga/home-page/championships/2015/u-s--women-s-amateur.html ) once the tournament begins tomorrow. (Starting times are available now at http://www.usga.org/content/usga/ho...2015/u-s--women-s-amateur/starting-times.html .)
Edit- Scoring link is now live at http://www.usga.org/championships/2015/u-s--women-s-amateur/scoring.html

Per the live scoring link above, looks like Esther Lee JUST missed the cut Tuesday to qualify for yesterday's start of match play. Looks like she had a tough enough round Monday (79) so that even her good 2nd round 71 wasn't quite enough to advance. (She ended up +5 overall, and it looks like +4 was the cut line, although there must have been a tie breaker necessary to get to exactly 64 players, as only ~1/2 the players at +4 advanced.)

Just wanted to give congrats to former Buff cross country and track runner Sara Sutherland (Just completed her senior year of eligibility with the Buffs as a 5th year red shirt year grad student after transferring from Texas) for signing/ earning her 1st professional running contract. She came on strong late in the track season and finished her college season with a great 3rd place finish in the 1,500 meters at the NCAA championships, followed up with getting to represent the U.S. in the 5,000 meters and finishing 5th at the World University Games in South Korea.

Hope she keeps up the work and improving those times!

With the World Track and Field Championships completed a week or so ago, I believe former Buff track greats Jenny Simpson and Emma Coburn only have a couple/ few races left this year. The 1st of those is in a few hours at the Zürich IAAF Diamond League Track and Field Meet.

Since neither of their normal events are being raced at this meet, both will be both be toeing the line in the women's 3,000 meter race. With the top 2-3 in the world at the distance also in the race, it will take a major upset for either to win, but Ms. Simpson might be in the discussion for a podium finish. (She specializes in the 1500 meters, but has shown good versatility in the past, for example winning the U.S. 5,000 meter championship a few years ago when she'd already qualified for the 1,500 meters at the World Championships.) Ms. Coburn is just probably looking for a good run and new personal best 3K time, while getting more speed work and race experience in against the world's best.

Per letsun.com (http://www.letsrun.com/news/2015/09...t-3000-kiprop-vs-kiplagat-for-40000-and-more/), there is also a chance Ms. Simpson, or the other top American racing today who's shown good speed Shannon Rowbury (who recently broke the U.S. 1500M record), could possibly have a chance of breaking the OLD (1985) 3K U.S. record of 8:25.83 held by former Buff Mary Decker Slaney. (This assumes (I assume) one or more of the Americans get carried along by the blistering pace of the race favorites, and the race has the necessary fast consistent pace throughout needed for great times.)

Television (or streaming for those with mobile devices and the proper cable/ sattelite subscriptions) coverage of the meet is on beIN Sports, and goes from noon-2:00 PM Mountain Time today, with the 3,000 meter featuring the former Buffs scheduled to start at 1:19 PM MT.
