An end to FCS teams on schedules, but with a big * for the B1G

Looks good in theory but they will still just load up on the bottom feeders from the Mid-American who in many cases aren't as good as the better FCS teams.

Can see all the P5 conferences going to this pretty soon though (with the SEC holding out) for the PAC that will mean a lot of MWC teams on the schedule.

Big winner will be the Sun Belt which will become the new source of easiest wins. Their value as an opponent on a schedule will jump by a bunch.

I suspect that this has been talked about for a while and that P5 Athletic Directors have been reading the writing on the walls with all these future game announcements we've been seeing. Probably driven by the media partners in these huge deals wanting more volume of good content.

Certainly a major factor driving CU scheduling out of a continuation of a neutral site series with a G5 team since it was forcing FCS one-off games in order for the Buffs to get to at least 6 games at Folsom each year.

I think you are right about the neutral site games and the number of home games.

Easy to see schools like Nebraska paying Sun Belt schools and Mid-America schools some heretofore huge amounts for one offs to keep their seven game home schedules in place.

The other big winners with be perpetual bottom feeders in P5 conferences like Iowa State, Kansas, Indiana, Illinois, Washington State, and for the time being us who are looked at as the "easy" P5 opponent to satisfy the requirement.

I wonder what the impact will be to FCS teams and their budgets. I would imagine that there are several FCS schools that rely on the 'baby seal clubbing' to support thier athletic programs.

$1 mil can support a lot of partial scholarship athletes and teams at a lower level college.

'Cept Nubs have 8 home games on average.... They may have to schedule up to get their quota filled

It's not like the big teams are going to play the good teams in the lesser conferences. OSU won't be playing ECU. They'll be playing the bottom teams.

The mid to bottom teams will then be left playing the better opponents. OSU and teams like NU will pay for home games and not 1-1. Maybe 2-1 at worse.

^^This^^

The big money teams will be able to outbid other schools to get the worst of the BCS level teams, that's why I mentioned this as a boom for Sun Belt schools and the like.

Instead of paying them $400,000 for a one time visit to Stinkoln or Columbus or Tuscaloosa they will be paying them $800,000 a game for a 3 game contract.

OU Buff makes a good point about the impact on budgets, it could be make or break for some FCS programs and potentially the viability of their entire athletic programs.

It may also be another step towards the BCS level schools, with the P5 calling the shots, making a clean break from the rest of the NCAA and forming a different governing organization.

These changes really help the bigger schools...I feel for the smaller schools who don't have the $ for stipends, facilities etc and depend on the paycheck from playing a big name school(s). Can't say I'm really for all these changes, or at least don't like the unintended consequences.

How do you know the consequences are unintended?

Ding, ding, ding... we have a winner!!!

Bigger media contracts and a move to keep all the money within the P5 pot is driving this now that the rules have changed to allow for stipends and other things that differentiate and separate the P5 even more. The G5 is becoming the new FCS as far as the P5 schools are concerned.

I get the whole thing is about money...but again...I don't think it's their intention to hurt the smaller schools...they simply don't care...nor am I suggesting they should.

If you are not seeing a seismic shift with P5 schools breaking away, you have not been paying attention. Of course it is intentional.

Yes. No one is sitting in a meeting or on a conference call representing a P5 school and saying, "How can we **** with Nicholls State?". Nicholls State may get screwed in this process, but it is collateral damage to what the P5 programs are pursuing as a strategy.

I think the P5 do want the smaller schools to go away. Less competition. More money.

For now, CU is on the right side of this equation. I hope it stays that way. I'm concerned at some point these same forces that are funneling millions of dollars into the CU AD's bank account will find a way to kick us to the curb.
