Football Practice Report: Aug. 11 (Good news on Gillam)

Leavitt calls Gillam "unbelievable"

I assume you dont even realize you do this, but when you get in a fight with people over something like Gillam's health, when you are pretty over bearing and obnoxious about it, and then matter closes itself - it is really annoying to most of us when you make posts like this. It would be the equivalent of me replying to this by saying:

"Tupou un-suspended yet?"

Now for the rest of us here are some pretty encouraging notes on Both Gilliam and Awini:

Defensive coordinator Jim Leavitt was asked after practice about the progress of linebacker Addison Gillam.

Gillam was hampered by illness and injury for much of last season (he still played in 11 games and started 10). The CU junior has gained back the weight he lost, and coaches say he's healthy and ready to go.

“Today I put him out there, and I’m moving him around in different places,” Leavitt said. “Mike (MacIntyre) came up to me and said, ‘What do you think?’ I said, ‘Unbelievable.’

“To come out there and do what he did today was unbelievable. He just has a feel for the game. His instincts, he has great length, he covers ground … I think he’s doing really, really well.”

MR. VERSATILE: Former quarterback Jaleel Awini is finding himself in a variety of positions on defense. He’s lined up at linebacker and at the nickel, and is also getting some special teams reps.

Awini is the former Air Force quarterback who transferred to CU last season and sat out the year per NCAA rules regarding transfers. MacIntyre said the 6-foot-2, 220-pound junior is having a solid camp.

“He’s doing a really good job,” MacIntyre said. “He made some really nice plays (in Monday’s scrimmage).”

Awini picking up the defense and being effective would be a huge boost to the LB corp. He has the athleticism to be good back there.

Really excited to see some of the kids that were injured and redshirting playing this year. More size and speed is GOOD.

Excited to see those players and also what Leavitt has done. Awini could be great. awesome that gillam is impressing coach leavitt. Good sign. I would guess that Leavitt likes seeing a like of fire and energy from guys.

This year, it's the defense that I really want to see on the field. It will give us an early idea of how well we can do. Offense under Lindgren is in good hands. no worries there. Powell should be starter. I like Leavitt's energy and he seems like a great motivator.

Leavitt and Lindgren could be the right combination of coordinators to finally get us to that next level?

I had Awini as my player to watch this year. The dude is gonna surprise some people me thinks.

If Awini goes off, you'll get full credit for having your finger on the pulse and eyes on the prize.

Tailgaters have Awini roast.

Cocktail Awini is what's for dinner.

Have coaches considered putting Awini in the slot? Seems like a natural fit there. Hell, as long as he doesn't get too big, you could try working him in to tight end.
