The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Good: We hung with this team for a half, at least. Our talent and strength is improving. Made some plays and looked competitive for a while.

Bad: Defense was completely manhandled in the second half. Not sure if it's OU's halftime adjustments or we were just pushing so hard in the first half to compete we were exhausted in the second.

Ugly: Run game was pathetic. Injuries and lack of talent show when playing in the big leagues. Sefo has major issues, and he is sadly the best QB we have, my confidence in 5-6 wins takes a major blow.

I'm not too disappointed cuz I didn't expect much different from this game. I was wondering where we were physically in regards to the PAC12, and while we are no doubt better than last year, we have a ways to go to be competitive with the most athletic teams in the conference. Weaknesses in QB, OL and LB are pretty evident. I don't know why we seem to have no explosiveness on offense...play calling? Sefo's lack of field vision? Me overrating guys like Bobo and Fields? And I really question Mac...why is Neinas still there? How do your teams continue to choke in big games (Hawaii,Oregon)? Why is recruiting substandard for the PAC12?

This team still has the chance to do some good things...technically we're in second or third place in the PAC12 South :)...and if they stop the mistakes they can win some more...a big IF.

I'm sick of seeing bad o line play. It's bordering on comical how many years in a row we've had poor o line play. In my mind the offense goes as the line goes.

It's not about the Xs and Os, it's about the Jimmys and the Joes.

Odd question but Ill toss it out there; if HCMM replaced Charlie Strong at talent rich UT would the Horns be 1-4? Probably not.

Almost all very good points. Especially over-rating guys like Bobo and Fields. There are positions where 2-star talent can be pretty darned effective, but it's almost always glaring at the WR position and we don't have playmakers there. Shay is just another possession receiver, albeit, faster than our others. We got in this argument early (Probably was 'Tini screaming how much better we'd be). We get good blocking out of WRs, but we frankly don't get open (sans Spruce).

Pass Rush is another area where we don't have explosive enough guys.

Add Crawley to list. He gets beat early and often, on deep passes.

I'm not sure Sefo is our "best QB on the roster", he's just far and away our most experienced. The guy who has gotten the #2 snaps for 2 years isn't very good (Gehrke) - but he was brought in as a stopgap when the position was left bare after the Shane-the-Sham fiasco. A lot of programs in the same boat or worse right now, including Oregon, Alabama.... I'm not sure we can make any conclusions on this staff's own recruits (Apsay, Montez) at the position, I peronally am optimistic that we are setting the table pretty well there. Apsay and Montez both look like guys who can play at this level with development.

We've lost 2 Left Tackles. That's pretty big for a program that is where we are at. Krongshage had his hands full with a top-level D-line. Expecting Lisella to come in and Nembot to swap sides is a lot of expectations for a program still trying to build depth.

Our D doesn't have enough athletes. Gamboa could not handle the RB out of the backfield in this spread offense. There's not a lot of LB's that can. I was wondering why they didn't just play a DB there and try to match the speed better. We needed to take the run away and make them beat us going downfield.

2nd half adjustments went to Oregon Staff. But the talent disparity favored that.

"Why is recruiting sub-standard for the PAC-12"? - Check our W/L record the last 10 years. Look at Utah's classes:
2011: #37 (CU #75)
2012: #28 (CU #26) - but that class was a disaster (Dillon, Yuri, Thomas boys from TX, Payne, Jagne.....)
2013: #44 (CU #68)
2014: #67 (CU #63)

2012: CU signed 27 guys. Of that, about 8 guys play (They are Seniors and 4th year Juniors).

Good: Awuzie and Thompson are studs. And Lindsay has a ton of heart

Bad: OL was horrendous. No pass rush whatsoever. LB'S are mediocre. We have nothing g there and it will only get worse

Ugly: Student section threw 100+ towels on the field. Including one right when we snapped the ball for Sefo's running TD. And that was after 5 warnings of "next towel is a penalty." Embarrassing.

This staff has recruited poorly at most positions but the depth at LB, Tackle, and RB is all on them. If we recruited anything at those positions we could have won

At least we can all enjoy your signature.

You must have really been upset when the students were throwing marshmallows all over the place. Sheesh. Kids throw towels on the field and it upsets you? Don't you have to be in be in bed by 8:30 if you are that old? You would never have been able to handle the Mac era when the students rained the field with oranges.

I am a big fan of the marshmallows. In my opinion, the lack of marshmallows is what is holding us back.

Good: This team continued to show that it can play with just about anyone, even when out matched talent wise at almost every position.

Bad: Rushing defense. 361 yards against is an absolute ass kicking up front.

Ugly: Sefo's inconsistency. He shows flashes of greatness, at times, and then completely ****s the bed in big time situations. He just epitomizes the "almost" nature of the CU football team the past couple years. I will also throw the OL performance in here as well. They're awful and they are part of the "Sefo problem".

Good- Tied at half

Bad- OL,LB's are too slow, not enough pressure on qb and missed open wr.

Ugly- recruiting, lack of mental toughness and hearing "We need to fix the little things"

Oregon is not that good especially on defense....Georgia State and Eastern Washington both put a lot more yards than we did on them. Oregon was play a walkon at QB. So acting like we were facing the conference elite is a stretch.

Not sure I agree with your "good". A demoralized and depleted Oregon team took it to us last night. If they are at full strength we probably lose by 40. And where are these "flashes of greatness" from Sefo that you speak of? I must have missed them.

We are also a depleted team from what we were expected to be this season. Oregon may not be what they were last year, but they are still a very talented team, with one of the best RBs in the country.

Sefo makes some really nice throws at times. Deep ball to Spruce, TD to Shay are specific ones from last night. He also shows flashes of mobility and improvisation when things break down. Unfortunately, all those flashes mean nothing when he fumbles the ball on a routine play at a crucial moment, or under/over throws a wide open receiver.

Oregon was playing a walk on placeholder at QB, yet they still looked to have superior talent.

That deep ball to Spruce was nice, but there are QBs all over the country making that throw - it hardly qualifies as greatness IMO.

Greatness may have been the wrong word. He makes throws at times that make him look like he belongs as a Pac 12 QB is more of what I was getting at.

Good: Nienas: true freshman punter is actually starting to look good and maybe showing signs he could be great. Several kicks almost blocked by CU. Moeller all over the field. Lindsay as a receiving back.

Bad: Oline that got Sefo killed. No pressure on Oregon QBs.

Ugly: Sefo injury will regress us to 2013.

A couple of 'em had a better arm than Sefo.

Special team version:

The Good: Gonzalez's kicking is getting better and better. Kinney had some great punts. I finally saw the reason for the hype.
Bad: Our kick offs. Can't Gonzalez at least get 'em to the end zone? Graham is lucky if he reaches the 5!
Ugly: Kick coverage sucked. Which is a drag when the kicks only reach the 7.

The desperation for Neinas and the ST unit to be good is so bizarre to me. People seemingly grasp at anything they can to say the ST did good. We had a punt partially blocked last night btw.. The only positive to ST is Diego Gonzalez hasn't been bad.

In unestablished programs the ST coach inherits a bunch of new, and/or iffy second string players at the beginning of the year. This year Neinas had a lot of major ST positions to refill. So I judge based on improvement from here on out.

There are a few players on special teams that I've never heard of and don't have scholarships. I wonder if this staff rewards the guys that play hard in practice with getting special teams playing time.

Am I missing a bad joke?

I've now seen "Garcia" and "Martinez" this morning.

Our kicker's name is "Diego Gonzalez".

If "Gonzalez" is too difficult for people, how about going with "Diego" or just not posting about him.

(Yes, I'm feeling salty this morning.)

For me that main reason why CU didn't have a shot at winning after they got it down to a one TD deficit was the way their lines (offensive and defensive) were handled by Oregon. CU simply couldn't hold their own in the trenches. We can talk about schemes and play calling all night long, but it won't really matter until they can hold their own in trenches.

Haha. I read too many war novels!

I think we were facing some pretty elite talent, but as a team they are not elite.

The ugly: Front seven talent on defense. Yikes.
I'm beginning to think we might have one of the worst core of linebackers in the nation. It's such a glaring weakness, I am not sure how a team can't expose that relentlessly.
