Yeah that's a serious mental issue, he's about the right age for the onset of schizophrenia so I wouldn't be surprised if something like that was involved. Had a buddy in college who was fine almost the whole way through school and then shortly before graduation he starting exhibiting some strange and impulsive behaviors (thankfully nothing violent) and found out after we graduated that he had been subsequently diagnosed.
Probably because he's mentally ill so they have the reason and don't need to speculate.

I speculate that the machete guy feels like those cyclists who ride the 13.5 mile loop around the lake. Bunch of Lance Armstrongs, they are.
The assalant was probably pissed a jogger was obstructing his path, requiring him to use breaks and, heaven forbid, actually downshift.
Why can't theses inconsiderate joggers stay out of the way of hyper-competitive Dallas cyclists who doll up in rediculously bright colored Lycra and ride $10,000 carbon graphite frames, disk wheels, aerodynamic helmets, and extended handled bars.

Typical of the media that they emphasized his being an ex-Aggie. Seems like from the story he was there less than a season, had no real impact, and has been out of the program for a couple of years but typical of the media his significant identifier is as a former member of the team.

Seriously? Turn off Fox News. Go outside. Talk to some people outside of your immediate social circle. Etc. There is clearly a mental health issue at play here. I see nothing about this at all that indicates that it's a race issue.
If you insist on playing politics, you could instead have a look at the comments section of the linked article, and then ask yourself: is there a pattern in the attribution of motivations for crimes with respect to race and mental health?
